Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Embarrassingly bad script
The technical execution, just like all big budget movies, was excellent. But the story, dialogue, and script were so very very bad. Tom Holland is quite a good actor but he didn't have much to work with here.
I'm really wondering if the script was written by high school interns. The story is so weak and flounders and goes nowhere. The dialogue is silly. The characters do and say things that are completely out of character. For example, Dr Strange is not a grouchy goofball trying for laughs but in this movie that is what he does. The old Scooby-Doo shows from the 1970s were written better than this.
I'm trying to understand how this movie gets an 8.2 average rating, as it stands today. Are there really that many people that don't know the difference between cheap junk food and a gourmet meal?
Gran Turismo (2023)
Amazing true story
This is a fun movie that was well done. Absolutely incredible that a video gamer became one of the best race car drivers in the world. The movie doesn't try to get dark or weird or too philosophical. It just tells the story in a fun and fast-paced way.
The directing and cinematography were both good. The acting and dialogue was good. I don't think this movie will win any Oscars but it was a fun show that was super entertaining all the way through.
Watching Hopper from stranger things and legolas from Lord of the rings was also fun having those guys in this movie. I wish more movies like this were made.
All the Old Knives (2022)
Slow and dull.
I gave up after a half hour. I can handle a slow burn if the story and dialogue are both amazing. Neither were the case for this one. The dialogue seems like it was written by an amateur, maybe like a first-year film student or something.
When a movie goes so slow like this it makes me assume that the story doesn't have much to it and they really have to drag it out to fill 2 hours.
The cinematography is excellent, good editing, all the technical aspects are so good. But the gold standard of any movie is really the script, and this one isn't great.
Kind of reminds me of tinker Tailor soldier spy, just so slow and boring.
The Hill (2023)
Inspiring Christian baseball movie
This is a very well executed inspiring Christian baseball movie. Well done and enjoyable. Faith-based and uplifting. Several times it reminded me of the movie The Natural, except this was a true story and the natural was fiction.
There's a do or die point in the movie where Ricky get severely injured, on top of his lifelong injuries. Makes you think it's all over and done and this is insurmountable. Amazingly he gets surgery, recovers very quickly, and ends up going to the pro tryouts.
Almost impossible to believe how much adversity he overcame to play the game he loved, but also never lost his Christian faith.
Tetris (2023)
Fantastic movie!!
This is one of the best movies I have seen in the past 15 years. It's right up there with moneyball and the big short. It's almost unbelievable that this is a true story. It has all the elements: mystery, intrigue, action, thriller.
It's also a reminder of what life was like in the ex Soviet Union and how absolutely evil communism is and was. This movie plays out like some kind of Jason Bourne international thriller. It's a must-see.
The acting is great, the dialogue is excellent, the story is amazing, and all the elements of good filmmaking are there. Additionally there's all this extra little razzle dazzle of '80s pixelated graphics and '80s music which really adds some flair.
The Adam Project (2022)
Back To The Future 4
Amazing production quality and decent acting, but I just couldn't get fired up about this movie. It's missing some kind of core. Watching this movie is like eating a churro and 10 minutes later you're hungry again.
Downfall: The Case Against Boeing (2022)
Stunning
I believe in capitalism, but not in the stupidity of ignoring safety concerns in the name of short-term profits. Amazing how a few Boeing executives could nearly destroy a once-great airline and be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people.
Red Dawn (2012)
Nearly perfect movie
I am appalled by all the low ratings for this movie. It is one of my favorites and I have seen it at least four times. My kids love it as well. The characters and plot are excellent, it is just so well done.
Collateral Beauty (2016)
Original story
Very well done, original story, fantastic plot twists at the end. I subtracted 2 stars from 10 for the completely unnecessary F-bomb and other profanity. Would have been just as good as a mild PG.
Cruella (2021)
Stunned by this fantastic movie!
Wow!! Mind blown. Fantastic story. Smart, sharp dialogue. Excellent acting. The only thing that almost cost them a star was when for about 20 minutes I thought I was watching The Devil Wears Prada. But then again it might have been a brilliant and intentional nod and play on words.
This may be the best movie of 2021. If it doesn't win Best Picture and if Emma Stone doesn't win Best actor, the Oscars are a sham.
Netflix vs. the World (2019)
Fascinating story
Worth watching. Almost went too long, but very good.
This Is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist (2021)
Great docu, too long
This was a fascinating documentary that I really enjoyed. I would have given it 10 Stars but it was too long and could have been shorter. I watched it on vidangel so that it was PG instead of MA.
Sarangeui bulsachak (2019)
Absolutely incredible!
This series is pure genius. Gripping and satisfying from beginning to end. I want to watch it again.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
What a tedious movie
We paid $30 to watch this in our home theater, but it wasn't worth a dollar. The story was flat, the characters dull, and the jokes lame. It's sad that so much time and money was poured into this. Truly, the dialogue was cliche and trite from beginning to end. With all of Disney's resources, couldn't they have found a decent script?
If an aspiring screenwriter had written this it would have been rejected hard.
The dragon character is sillier and and more annoying than Jar Jar Binks.
This movie reminds me of a really poor sequel that wasn't good enough for theaters so it goes straight to video and ends up in the bargain bin at walmart 2 months later.
So tedious...will this movie ever end?
I wish I had donated the $30 to charity and saved two hours of my life.
In fairness, the digital animation was good, so the stars are for that.
Greenland (2020)
Not as good as 2012
This was an okay movie but there's a 45-minute segment that is literally just the family running around trying to find each other in some Midwestern State. It really dragged on. This movie kind of seemed like a rip off of 2012, but 2012 was much better.
The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020)
Like fresh whole wheat bread out of the oven
Very nice, feel good, inspirational. Doesn't have a big budget feel, but has a core. Like whole wheat bread vs cheese puffs.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Exceeded expectations!
I expected a little sleeper movie but felt like I wanted to watch it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. It was very inspiring and heartwarming.
Mully (2015)
Inspiring movie
If this movie had been fiction everyone would say it was too far-fetched. Truth is stranger than fiction. This is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever seen.
Manhunt (2017)
Incredible!
This is so well done. Worth the watch.Very cereby, not dumbed down.
Ad Astra (2019)
I fell asleep multiple times
This may be the most boring movie ever made. It was so S-L-O-W. Reminded me of how the movie "Arrival" was super slow, except that Ad Astra was far slower and more boring than Arrival. The trailer looked cool and I think Brad Pitt is a great actor. So I had high hopes, yet was hugely disappointed. The only interesting part of the whole movie was the deranged killer monkey. So I got thinking that these killer monkeys would become a plot line and premise of the movie. Nope. Just randomly thrown in there in one scene, never to be seen again.
The script felt amateurish, like maybe what a film student would put out in first semester. The storyline was imbalanced and dull. I can't believe anyone would pour big-budget money into a story like this, and also can't believe Brad Pitt agreed to do it.
So when I was approaching the end of the movie I thought, "Okay, everything has been dull and lousy up til this point, but I might forgive all if the ending is AWESOME!!?? No such luck. The ending was a huge let-down, nothing there worth getting excited about.
Churchill (2017)
I was duped...but now I see!
I thought this was a very well-made movie and very compelling. I came here to say as much and leave a good review. But I just spent 15 minutes reading reviews from many articulate and passionate people stating that the core premise of the film is historically false. Now, I am appalled. I don't like being duped by a movie that is supposedly based on true people and events.
I was a huge fan of Churchill before watching this and then felt disappointed that maybe he wasn't the great man that I originally thought. But after reading all these 1-star reviews, my admiration of Churchill is restored and I am now very disappointed in the filmmakers for portraying a fake version of a heroic figure.
I want to thank all those who took the time to set the record straight. I will attempt to improve my historical knowledge of Churchill.
I gave it 3 stars because I thought it was a well made movie but it loses 7 stars for falsifying Churchill's role in D-DAY.
