Les Papillons Noirs (2022)
Underrated gem with twisty plots
I stumbled upon this and the short synopsis intrigued me. The first episode starts of innocently as it established the motive of the two main leads, Adrien and Albert. Who were both played well by Nicolas Duvauchelle and Niels Arestrup. The next couple of episodes were a bit of a slow burn, but it all changed in episode 4 onwards as the story starts to unravel itself and it became a worthy series to watch. As Adrien slowly change his persona and struggles with the truth that Albert presents to him, the plot twist and turns. As it is quite unexpected and you tend to feel for the characters and what they strive to achieve. A highly recommended watch. If you haven't, you should!
You Don't Know Me (2021)
A 4 ep slow burn. Be patient, it'll pay off.
I like crime mystery drama series. So this fell in my lap willingly. I was intrigued with its premise, and the first episode got me glued easily. There was a whole lot of talking. But since its just 4 episodes, it won't take much of my time.
In the end, Im glad I stayed on. Although by the last 30 mins of ep 4, you sort of able to guess there hidden plot. However, I loved the ending as it gives viewers a chance to think about the protagonist's story.
One to watch foe sure.
Euphoria (2019)
Other than the beautiful cinematography, this show is an overrated trash
I heard, read and was told of how good this show is. So I watched Season 1 and the first few episodes in I was amazed at the beautiful cinematography and brilliant editing. Also, I can't help but notice the amount of d**** and t*** thrown-in in this soft core porn disguising as a revolutionary teen drama. The show is oversexualised , far fetched unbelievable lives of high school teenagers. And this show is meant for adults! What ideology are the creators trying to push here. For adult viewers to fantasize about these highly sexed teenagers? I don't feel anything for any of the characters. Most of them are shallow and selfish. Zendaya's acting was alright. Good at times but not entirely. There are better shows out there and this is definitely not one of them.
Entrevías (2021)
NOT Taken!
It was sold as a decoration war-vet grandpa against the city's drug gang. Had hints of Taken and appeared to have an interesting premise. But was served is a love story in disguise with too much talking and a little teaspoon of action. Don't be fooled, as grandpa doesn't do an old man vs the world narrative. He becomes grumpy every 5 minutes and gets pissed off at the tiniest of things.
It could have been better, but that story lies on the other side of the tracks.
Ambulance (2022)
Frantic movie that leaves plot at home
Where do you even start with this remake? Bay's version is all over the place. Not only he is the master of destruction, he also often leaves plot holes everywhere. One after another things don't make sense and you can see through the porous story line.
Can skip this film. Unless you want to test out your home theatre system. That's about it.
Black Space (2020)
Not bad, if you look past the plot holes
The premise of the story is rather interesting. Though in Ep1 you can roughly figure that the shooters were among the schoolkids themselves. Davidi the detective is probably the best character of the series. Though he could have solved the case within a day or two by swabbing hands for GSR. Oh well...
The Unforgivable (2021)
Solid acting from Bullock, but film is predictable
This is a remake of the British mini series, Unforgiven. I only of this after watching The Unforgivable. So going in without knowing anything about this, I had somewhat of an expectation. As expected, Sandra Bullock delivers a strong performance as an unlikeable ex-convict. After her release, her main goal is to find her long lost sister.
Along the way she encounters different characters, and after seeing them on screen for 5 minutes, you already know the plot path these characters will take. The colleague is also an ex-convict - no surprise there. The 2 brothers - the 'good' will turn bad and the angry one will sleep with his brothers wife. Too predictable.
The most predictable plot however, was that the younger sister was the one the shot and killed the sheriff. The film unconsciously revealed and that is its biggest weakness.
Overall a good believable acting from Sandra Bullock, but a film that fell short of its mark.
Jiok (2021)
Overrated nonsense
I watched the first episode for 10 minutes and thought the CG was poorly done and the premise was stupid. I stopped watching after that. A week later, a colleague told me that Hellbound is good and I should continue beyond the 10 minutes. I figured I can handle 6 episodes of this. And after the 6 eps, I thought this show is utter nonsense. Don't waste your time with this show. Overrated, rushed narrative and a story that goes nowhere most of the time.
Spotless (2015)
A pretty solid series
Stumbled upon this on Netflix and the premise of the story caught my attention. Lets just say Spotless has a Breaking Bad sort of vibe. A guy who wants to do good but ends up doing the bad. It has its laughable moments but personally I think throughout the 10 episodes it was a rather solid series. Its a shame that there will probably never be a season2, but I do hope it gets picked up continue where it left off. Enjoyable series I must say!
Old (2021)
Its a B grade film powdered up
Take away all the big names and you end up with a typical B Grade standard script - a bunch of innocent people unknowingly get sucked into a weird situation where death is bound to happen. No logical answer until it is all revealed to be tied to some sort of experiment.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
It was good...for a while
For me, the first few episodes was a definite 8 in my books. But it started to be a bit boring and predictable in the last couple episodes. The glass game did not feel like an old children game. A new take on hopscotch perhaps. When the old guy appeared again at the end, I saw this coming, the second they showed the back of the head of The Host. This happened after Player 001 supposedly died in game 3. I was more surprised that I guessed right rather than his screen time in the final episode. Also I didn't get Frontman's motivation. He looked like the leader, but actually a yes man. He left his brother cop looking for him to be just that? A rich man yes man. Hmmm...so I did not understand this bit/character. I find a rather loose story about the brothers.
Then we have Gi Hun With his decision at the end. He finally gets a chance to start over with his daughter, the one thing he wants more than anything else. Instead he went back for seconds. No wait, thirds. I guess setting the narrative this way opens the possibility of a season 2.
I get the high ratings and hype, but beneath it all its a not-too-bad series worthy of a 6.
How It Ends (2018)
How it ends?
Your guess is as good as mine. There was literally no ending. All that trouble just to see the ending credits.
Imperial Dreams (2014)
Poignant. Beautiful narrative.
Didn't know what to expect with this. Just saw Boyega doing a drama and thought of giving this a watch. I don't live in the same world as Bambi, so I wouldn't know what it is really like to be in his shoes. But I assume the writers knew what its like, and wow, my mind was shook. What a sad reality it can be for someone like Bambi. The system was created to fail people and it takes a lot for someone to rise above it all to find some peace and ultimately life away from crime.
This is a slow burn, but a wonderfully crafted film, probably a hint of reality and Bambi is a reflection of this life.
The only thing that irks me with this film is the supporting casts. While Boyega was amazing as Bambi, the rest was just floating by.
Shameless: Father Frank, Full of Grace (2021)
Thanks, but no thanks!
I can't believe the writers decided this is how they should end a great show. Sorry, what was a great show. Ever since Fiona left, it was on its way down. The last 2 seasons without her makes the familial Gallagher adds up to nothing. Ian got married - No Fiona. Who owns the family house - Fiona. Liam's legal guardian - Fiona...I can just go on. I don't expect a Emmy Rossum cameo, but as writers I bet you can include her character into the story without her physical presence.
And how could Frank's goodbye not mention Fiona at all?? What utter rubbish!!!
Awake (2021)
It's pretty...
...hard to stay awake for this. Avoid it like the plagie.
¿Quién Mató a Sara? (2021)
Trashy netflix telenovela
I had high hopes after reading the synopsis to this series. It had quite an interesting plot. But by the 3rd episode I realised that this was an absolute trashy of a show. The narrative tried to create a sense of unpredictable plot turns, but it ended up not making any cohesive sense. It was starting to show how cheap the script was and how shallow the characters motivation were. Throw in senseless sex scenes, clearly to boost viewership, which also goes to show the shallow production mindset too. In a nutshell, this is a 'polished' telenovela with bad plots and lacking any real conviction as a murder mystery. Skip i!
Undercover (2019)
Surprisingly great show. Gritty story!
A splendid gritty drama. Tom Waes does a great job playing Bob. Or is it Peter. No wait, it's Steve. Anyway, whoever he is in on screen, he portrays an inspiring performance. So does the support cast around him. Absolutely brilliant with their solid acting!
The story arcs are well written. With unexpected and unpredictable plots. Much like the lead character. Personally S1 fared slightly better than S2.
Highly recommended if you love gritty police drama.
Soi-lát-daa-laen (2011)
Absurd horror
I don't get the high praises for this movie. It started off well, making viewers believe that the haunting is in a house few doors down the street from where the protagonist live with his family. Only that that was a distraction from something totally that did not make much sense. This particular house then was just left out of the story loop without any explanation as to what it was, and the focus was shifted to the house next door. The most absurd part of all this was when the protagonist went into the haunted house next door, already aware that it is being haunted, with a hand-gun. A hand-gun to fight off ghosts? WTH? Stupid seen it already premise. They tried something new, but things were mostly like a very badly done patchwork. Skip it!
La casa de papel (2017)
OVER RATED!
I dont get the craze over this show. Personally it is over rated and the plots are being dragged on for far too long. The crooks spent 5 months to prep for the heist, going through every single detail. From wearing the same uniform and masks to hide their true identity. Yet, they can't find the time to buy a pair of gloves! Of course, leave traces of your prints all over the mint!
Also, their MO is very similar to that of the movie Inside Man. So for me that have watch Dalton Russell's work, find their move rather predictable. If you have watch Spike Lee's brilliant heist movie, then you can guess what is to come next with this show.
Most of the characters are annoying with almost no character development. Some were played to be integral to the storyline but then later just left on the sidelines, ending up like a featured extra.
The title Money Heist throws people off. I stopped after Season 2 because it became a love story more than an actual robbery. The robbers and hostages had time to fall in love as these sub plots is seriously ridiculous. I had to drag my feet to finish Season 1. The only reason I finish S2 is after reading the reviews here where some reviewers said to watch only up to S2. And so I did, regretfully.
What a waste of time! Seriously an over rated show.
