Mignonnes (2020)
Offensive Not Empowering
Couldn't even bring myself to fully watch this outrageous and clichéd subject matter. I quickly hit stop and watched a horror film. It was less horrifying.
Live Feed (2006)
Not too bad really!
I'm pretty serious when it comes to films and gave this a fair hearing. Believe it or not, I actually preferred this to the highly over-rated 'Hostel' (no way the "goriest, sickest movie" I'll ever see). That must stun you ;o) 'Hostel' had too much messing about and only really picked up around 50 minutes into it whereas this was far less boring from the outset and kept my interest more. Yes, it's cheesy, a bit 80's production & soundtrack-wise (think the makers intended so) and the actors seem just plucked off the streets as emergencies! The blood-spurting effects are very retro too. Overall a fun film for late at night when nothing much else is on. Get a box of Malteasers and take it for what it is: an independent, retro bit of fun! I've seen far worse, honest!
Koroshiya 1 (2001)
Ichi the Crybaby!
Brilliant film! It came across more black humour than anything else. Despite the warnings I've read in reviews and on the box, I found the graphic scenes were no worse than films like "Braindead" or other gorefests - in a different style of course! The way the killings were executed was almost cartoon-like, comical even. Very much like a living Manga cartoon. I loved Ichi himself, what a character! The outfits worn by the central characters were great, certainly inspired me to customise my woollen beanie for winter. The soundtrack was fantastic, full of energy. I liked the opening scene featuring Ichi on his bike - with the Asian Dance track, it was almost like a slick music video.
A must-see for fans of more 'adventurous' Asian cinema!
Tattoo (2002)
A good insight into to German thrillers
After watching the exceptionally powerful acting in "Downfall", I was subconsciously hoping for the same performances in this film.
But nah, the acting was pretty wooden and I ended up not caring about anyone! As far as thrillers go, this was pretty good but not what the hype made it out to be. Didn't actually see any victims being skinned for their tattoo either, only the aftermath on corpses.
Had me hooked in and interested but as a fan of more hardcore horror/thrillers, I'd only recommend this to easily offended/disturbed viewers (due to lack of graphic nature) looking for a decent enough Saturday night in with a big bag of noisy Doritos.
Halloween (2007)
Definitely one for teenagers or die-hard fans
The main reason I wanted to see this film was because I'm a fan of Malcolm McDowell - a brilliant actor specialising in cheeky/mischievous/cocky characters from the late 60s - mid 80s. I was pleased to see him in something again at last! McDowell was good playing a different kind of role than his usual, but I am slightly bias. The film itself was pretty straightforward plot-wise, easy enough to understand. Myers as a child was performed well, pretty convincing. That part of the film was of main interest to me. The child was indeed a psychopath and living in a house like that must have been what pushed him over the edge. The rest of the film was your usual slasher type and the murder scenes were bog standard knifings, etc. Quite boring after the first couple. After watching "Halloween" I suddenly wondered what happened to Brad Dourif's character, the Sheriff? Unless I missed it during a drink of my Pepsi Max! Also the film took quite a while to come to it's ending. The persual of Myers' sister went on too long and I was becoming bored. If you want real excitement & scene variety, I recommend you watch the "Saw" saga!
Creep (2004)
Allows your imagination to have fun!
As a fan of horror/thriller films, I was quietly confident this would be a good little film. I was right. Simple scenario that only nightmares are made of - trapped in the tube at night! Only a few characters in this film but any more would be unnecessary and unbelievable. I knew from the outset who would survive, perhaps that is my only criticism if I had to make one. I felt pity for the unfortunate soul who is the killer. Strange, I know but you may see why.
Creep does not show you in extreme graphic detail what is done to the victims so your imagination is given a treat. In-your-face gorefests can become just a mess and subtlety works for me - just like Japan's brilliant "Ringu" film. Creep isn't as subtle though! Harmless wee film overall, nothing negative to report. Enjoy the ride!
Outlaw (2007)
"Football Factory With Guns"?? More like Scooby Doo!
Although I've given this 1/10, I would have given it a well-earned 0 if it had been possible .
Having seen Nick Love's "Football Factory" & "The Business", I thought "Great!" and hired this out in good faith. Oh dear oh dear...
The shaky cinematography nearly triggered my epilepsy, the colour palette was more washed out & dull than the River Forth's shoreline at low tide, the acting wasn't convincing causing me to not give a damn about any of the characters. I only hoped none of the sheep were harmed whilst they were filming in the "countryside".
This film is gripping as a Lada's brakes on a road during a heavy downpour. As convincing as 1950s special effects. As believable as the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy... need we say more? If you're thinking of watching this, go and remove the hairs from the plughole ;o) My husband and I place this poor effort in our 'Worst Films Ever Seen' list. I'm just grateful it was from the library DVD hire section as a "Buy One Get One Free" deal.
