Keopi Hanjan Halkkayo? (2021)
Thank you, sir, may I have another?
This is not for everyone. This is for those who are into the slow poetry of a long shot, into the meditative quality of silence, into thinking about what the characters are feeling. It's a gem. When so much media is about speed, intensity, and in your face "this is what you should understand from it," this show give you space to immerse yourself in what a scene means, what the characters are. I find it comparable to "Midnight Diner" for the kind of atmosphere it sets and for the depth of feeling it elicits. Twelve episodes were enough to leave a mark, but I hope there will be more and that if they come they will stay true to the quality of this season.
The Night Agent (2023)
If you're looking for good writing and good acting...
This is not your show. The dialog is awfully written and delivered with the stiffness of Arnold Schwarzenegger playin a T800. Do yourself a service and stay away from this unless you need mindless background noise while doing mindless chores.
To some extent, this show is modeled after Kiefer Sutherland's 24. It wants to be a thriller driven by political intrigue, but it fails miserably by using cliches at every possible turn. If the writing were not already contrived and common place, it is peppered by inane lines - see for example what is done to show developing chemistry between the two protagonists. It doesn't help that the actors are robotic in their delivery.
I wanted something smart and exciting after watching The Diplomat and I thought this was going to be it. After all, several lists on the internet are lumping it together with The West Wing, House of Cards, and Homeland. Whereas these shows have something outstanding to offer, The Night Agent doesn't live up to being called "vanilla." It is more like a week-old reheated soup.
