wondering what the true intent of the show is
30 October 2021
I can only conclude that the people behind this joke are sitting their laughing while taking bets on how far they can go to hoodwink the public.

The subplots reached new heights of revealing nothing. My fav example is the Afghanistan segment. Not only void of content, but challenging the laws of physics, probability, guns, and wide open spaces.

The emperor really does have no clothes in this dreadful excuse for a TV show.

And not miss a piece of the plot.

Ok, I thought the Tyrion walk through the rubble in the last episode of Game of Thrones was the Icon for eating up precious screen time when you have lack of good script. But this show might challenge that.

Presumably we will also begin to see more aliens and less tidbits about personal lives of people we aren't sure will live for 60 minutes and who are having whole conversations in two different languages. Ok, ok, I did notice what most people think probably passes for a cute ending to the scene (still lacking the depth of . . . . oh pick any classic foreign film from the 20th century).

I think they threw subtlty out the window when they created some of these characters:
  • the selfish Muslim husband cheating on his wife and discovering for (apparently) the first time that racism exists
  • the Japanese mother telling her daughter who just lost the love of her life that maybe it's for the best
ACK, I can't go on.

Let's wrap up with product placement, BMWs passing on the freeway, a mention of the Tesla's disappointing features, I bet I could find the brands of the porcelain farmhouse sinks with a close-up. Did I miss some brands of cereal, etc.

worst scene editing ever
5 January 2021
For me the story was too drawn out, often boring. Would have been better at 3 hours. But most annoying was the way the scenes cut, sometimes after less than a minute. I appreciate switching from one scene to the next for suspense, but this was often ridiculous.

Very satisfying

I really enjoyed watching this episode, especially the solid acting. But I kept wondering if I'd find the end too preachy or one-sided. Did not happen. Very satisfying.

Will appeal to some, very much, others, not at all

Both "Beautiful view of Skanör" 10 star and "A sure cure for insomnia" 1 star are perfect reviews showing two entirely different reactions to this movie.

I absolutely loved it. But it's the kind of film I'm partial to (i.e. I like early Ingmar Bergman). Plus, I work with parrots, thus am a huge bird-o-phile. So, you decide if it's the kind of film you'd like.

The episode was ok, but the ending didn't make any sense. If the current pool shark does not like having to defend his title, just lose next time you play. Disappointing ending.

A simple joy, perfect pacing, superb acting. Each small plot piece was symbolic and spoke volumes. Well done Twilight Zone

possibly worst Twilight Zone episode
6 December 2019
Apparently a few episodes used this low-quality video-tape media. It's awful. The acting is stilted and the direction shows right through it. This episode probably ruined my ability to ever watch Inger Stevens again. She was awful in it, probably due to no fault of her own. Same for Irene Tedrow. Story was predictable but that's practically irrelevant.

I think this is a great idea, and done a number of other times. I think overall it's one of the most significant human thought experiments. It somehow just wasn't that great in this portrayal. I think that a story in which a good person goes to heaven would be more challenging, because no human could handle living forever in any conceivable afterlife.

Exquisite

Check out the other high-rating reviews for wonderful details on this episode. My brief take: Stunning photography, a truly gorgeously told visual story with almost no narrative except for a haunting song played a couple of times. It would be unfair to compare it to the regular Twilight Zone episodes, but the fact that Serling showed it probably betrays his great respect for this short cinematic piece.

I agree with the "An Underrated Gem" comments. A twist on the typical Twilight Zone story. Brought a tear to my eye.

Watch for the New Coke commercial at 27 minutes in. That might be the highpoint.

Good plot, dreadful direction, agree
16 March 2019
This may be the single most dreadful piece of direction I've seen in an otherwise good television series. Agree with the other reviews regarding mirrors and glass. Add to that artificial, amateurish angle shots and facial closeups. But the worst offender in my opinion was the stilted direction of the actors, especially in the early scenes when the action was "posed", people standing around like mannequins. An otherwise good plot, ruined by horrible direction.

At least Peter Hammond won't ever direct again, given his demise.
