Love, Death & Robots: Pop Squad (2021)
Great storytelling and use of silence.
A cool concept in a somewhat familiar cyberpunk setting. My favorite episode from Season 2.
Army of the Dead (2021)
An Entertaining Zombie Movie. No more, no less.
This movie achieves what it sets out to do: blend a heist and zombie movie into one. Is the plot outrageous? Yes. Do characters make stupid decisions to advance the movie and increase tension? Absolutely.
I don't go into a Zack Snyder zombie movie expecting a great deal of character-driven story or, tightly- woven plot. The action was great, and - for a Snyder film - there was more emotion than expected in the 2 main characters stories.
This is the ideal Netflix release and I did not regret checking it out.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Entertaining, but a few things hold it back.
There were aspects of this that prevented it from moving from good to great, but it was an entertaining action-centric, "buddy cop" show within Marvel's tightly-woven universe.
Don't get me wrong, I still watched it all, but if it hadn't been a part of the MCU, I probably would have given up on it.
Here are my main gripes (major spoilers ahead) :
1. The Flag Smashers are a fairly generic villain that never rely move into a truly memorable or feared territory.
2. The new Captain America is a great, almost psuedo-villain that I would have loved to have see more focus on. The final battle sees him accepting someone else as Cap with literally no push back, which is pretty out of character given how he acts in the episodes leading up to that point
3. Comics have always been political, so shining a light on the struggles a black man/hero in America made sense. A few of these moments felt a bit watered-down and it would have been nice to see the series go into that even further. Seeing how butthurt people got about what was, included is probably why Disney/Marvel didn't go deeper here.
Yasuke (2021)
An interesting spin on the samurai redemption story
It took me about halfway through episode 2 to "get" this show. It doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but is an interesting, well- written spin on the samurai redemption story.
I see a lot of the reviewers on here salty about about the unrealistic aspects of this show (magic, robots, etc.). I've never ever watched an anime show for its realism, so none of that bothers me in the slightest.
Lakeith's voice acting is great and FlyLo's production is solid. I'm happy this exists and enjoyed watching it.
Primal (2019)
Gorgeous art, solid soundtrack, captivating action.
The absence of dialogue and gripping action/soundtrack does a great job of keeping my eyes off my phone and on the screen.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
Really shines in the 2nd Half with solid stunt work.
After a fairly slow beginning, the film shows off a lot of really great stuntwork. If they trimmed off some of the bloat thay does little to advance the plot, this would be in my top 5 for Bonds.
Watchmen (2019)
Does a great job of subverting expectation, building on the source material
STAY AWAY FROM THE PHOTOS ON THE SHOWPAGE AS THEY CONTAIN A MAJOR SPOILER.
Given that IMDBs photos for the show spoiled it for me, I wanted to make sure I pointed that out for others. As for the show, I loved it. I am a fan of the graphic novel and - despite its flaws - Snyder's film. This show does a great job of honoring the book, but becoming something all its own. The score from Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor was fantastic, as well.
Hereditary (2018)
The best horror film I've seen in years.
Made me think, and kept me on my toes. Great acting/directing.
Midsommar (2019)
Top Notch Cinematography
Great atmosphere, cinematography and soundtrack. Surprisingly funny in some parts.
