The Match (2020)

I liked it a lot more than I expected to
18 August 2021
I did not begin to watch this movie with high expectations but I have to say it is very respectable. I do not understand some of the "criticisms", if you can even call them that. Sure, the actors in the film aren't famous but that's because it's an indie film, not a Hollywood production. I'd say the actors put in performances decent enough that they don't detract from the film. In terms of the production, perhaps someone would have managed to hide the small budget even better, but I didn't mind how the film was presented. In few insignificant places I did think some directional choices were a bit weird but not nearly enough to make me dislike the film. Because the most important thing works- and that is the story. I wouldn't say it's not comparable to anything else done before but it is a classic that works and is enjoyable. I would happily watch this movie many more times.

Nice but I don't utterly adore it like most people
28 August 2020
Visually I would give the film a perfect score, especially given that it was made in humbler surroundings and not by some Hollywood studio. However, I didn't feel the look was something that was new to me if I search outside the local cinema. I understand that filmmakers probably didn't intend to bring something completely new to the table and instead wanted to make an homage. That is perfectly legitimate but it stops me from wanting to give it the highest grade. I felt the main actor didn't perform perfectly either but overacted at times. Having said that, I still think the film offered more than most other films made in our country and overall the people who made it should be congratulated; hopefully we'll see more things from them.

Totally unsympathetic
5 April 2019
Apparently this film is supposed to be feel-good and appeal to millennials. Well, I'm a bit younger than the protagonist and the film only made me feel angered. While I personally find the aspect of a quarter life crisis important and therefore interesting, the protagonist was completely unsympathetic. She comes from a privileged background in terms of money but she is completely unaware of it. I could understand her wish to pursue her passion of photography as a career path but we don't really see that she is truly passionate about it, or even good at it so she would deserve success. Instead, she is willing to use some suspicious methods to get ahead. She doesn't have difficulties in her romantic pursuits either but the men playing her partners aren't fully fleshed out. Her parents feel like somewhat of a cliché that I've seen before, with the mother being more nagging and the father being more permissive. Where I also felt the film being stereotypical is the protagonist's easy-goingness when it comes to sexual relations, usage of drugs, drinking, partying, etc., as if all young people partake in that. Perhaps a bit more trivial but still unlikable was the constant showing of the protagonist as eating a lot, which reminded me of rom-coms where female characters do that. I can admit the appearance of photography in the film was nice, but then again, what use is that on its own?

Solid, but leaves plenty of room for improvement
21 March 2019
Making a historical film in more than recent past immediately makes things more complicated so I applaud the authors for daring to do it. The lack of a big enough budget can be felt influencing the plot but what was presented in the end managed to look good. However, there are some flaws that can't be blamed on the budget, such as the overuse of the voice overs and a fairly typical love storyline where two people deeply fall in love very quickly. The lead actress got hyped over the years and I couldn't completely appreciate her before but here she is truly lovely. Overall, while there are some noticeable flaws in the film, it managed to bring back a genre that is not that often used in local films and therefore it ended up being interesting enough.

Decent, but could have been better
20 March 2019
As a person fond of history and WW2 in particular, I was very eager to see this very interesting story brought to screen. However, I felt the film didn't turn out as great as it could have. I thought the voice overs were overused and there was a reluctance to give bigger flaws to any of the characters so in the end everyone in this dark era looked like they are, at least deep down, decent people. The time before the war seems idealized and when the war comes, it's as if no one supports the new system in the country, which doesn't ring true. While I felt there was potential to make a better final product, I compliment the filmmakers for selecting an interesting story that is worth telling, which is more than I can say for many others.

Raises interesting questions
27 December 2018
Throughout the years I've seen comments that considered the film worse than the director's first and third film. However, I find that undeserved and this film to be equivalently strong. It simply kept me interested all the way. Unlike what I've seen some critics say, I enjoyed that the tragic situations weren't attempted to be lightened by some comedic elements but instead stayed closer to aspects that can be found in tragedies from antiquity. As the protagonist questions his identity (played nicely by the main actor), we can be inspired to question some of our own beliefs, which is the best thing I can ask from a film.

Nothing spectacular but it's nice enough
27 December 2018
I'm personally quite picky with how I like animation to be done and am often not that fond of 3D stuff, even when it's of the highest quality such as things made by Pixar. Still, the idea of little creatures invisible to us who steal one sock from each of our pairs is something I find quite cute and original. The adventures throughout the film were fun enough so I would form a positive opinion about it.

Presents clichés about its target audience
27 December 2018
This film strived to offer something different compared to other local films. While the genre is not typical for its country, the element of novelty wasn't present because we are all exposed to other "international" films of this genre. The intention was further nullified by the fact that the story was predictable. It was like a mishmash of things already done numerous times in other films of the genre.

The title of the film itself could be called a "spoiler" and it is elaborated immediately in the beginning but perhaps it would have been better if the meaning of the title was revealed more gradually because like this we aren't left to guess. On top of that, the film relies on coincidences a few times- sometimes so one can turn a blind eye but on some occasions it seemed too much to give it a pass. The film's target audience was teenagers, which can be proved by the fact that two local influencers were engaged to promote it. However, the screenwriter, director and producers are middle-aged men so they incorporated their assumptions about today's youth without seeming to have experience with it. Youth is portrayed as being interested in solely wild partying and wild behavior in general, plus at the same time they are all bad students.

The relations between old and young are clichéd as well and the adults are villainized in a cheap attempt to make the youth more sympathetic. Furthermore, not only was the story predictable but the dialogues were as well. And both weren't credible. The slang used by young people in the film is based on stereotypes.

The film didn't intend to be deep but pure fun, which can be acceptable, but when things are presented this badly, it doesn't succeed in at least this.
