Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016)
Started off great but is a major disappointment near the end that cannot redeem the good
The last two seasons are a disappointment. Voltron's biggest weakness is that the plot drives the characters and not the other way around, which sadly makes for a rather sterile watch at times. This is further exacerbated by the last two seasons (I assume due to the writers and directors changeup). It felt meaningless to watch near the end because the main characters felt like a 13 year old's 'fanfiction' caricatures of what they have been established as in previous seasons. Voltron peaked in season 6 which highlighted its strength in characters like Keith, Shiro, Allura and Lotor, and unfortunately the final season did a disservice to all four of them.
Voltron: Legendary Defender: The End Is the Beginning (2018)
Not sure what was up with this season
But it's definitely Voltron's weakest so far and I'm very not fond of season 4. Throughout the entirety of season 8 it felt like I was watching a different show and the finale further cements this.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
Not just a kids' show
Avatar is still, until today, the best cartoon I've ever seen. Stunning animation, amazing soundtrack -- who here loves Agni Kai?! -- and great character arcs. Everyone in the main cast got enough time in the spotlight to shine but not too much to overshadow the main plot and focus of the story being Aang's fight to save the world from another Fire Nation destruction. I'm in love with the characters, the world building and the overall 'soul' this series has.
Searching (2018)
Not just a gimmick
A technology-based predecessor that has a similar soul to Get Out. A very well done mystery movie that used screens not as a gimmick but rather a storytelling method. We can see the main character's thought process through the use of typed, deleted texts, cursor movements, search keywords, etc... Without it this movie may be a decent mystery flick but by embracing it, it became a heartfelt mystery movie about a family. And a tip -- watch it on your computer.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Pleasantly surprised
Now THIS is how you do a manga/light novel adaptation!
Widows (2018)
A bore and a chore
This movie tried to be too much and ended up being nothing spectacular in the end. It didn't feel exciting at all. I've seen plenty of 'bad' movies that I could still sit through in the movies but Widows felt like a chore to watch to the point where I wish I could either just walk out or plug my ears up and sleep.
The barely-there background music added to the weariness of the movie that didn't work to their favor. All in all this movie seems like a Oscar-grabbing farce that I'm not sure I, as a general audience, got what the hype is all about. Sometimes a pretentious movie is just what it appears to be and I can't defend this movie to be anything else but that.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
A feast for the eyes and ears
Best Spiderman movie I've seen so far. The animation is stunning and I love how the 'glitching' theme ties in with the animation style/framerate and music. Genius on all levels.
