The Office (2005)
Unwatchable compared to the British version
Compared to the 10 star (original) British version, this American fake is just unwatchable. Maybe it is a different sense of humour Americans have? No, it can't be that, not when you think about how achingly, painfully, funny was the likes of Cheers, The Golden Girls, Seinfeld, Frasier, even Friends to a lesser extent, if you're very young. The Office, American version, just isn't funny, it has none of the nuance, none of the subtlety, none of the wit, it doesn't make you squirm and cringe like the English version, not like any of the great English sitcoms, Fawlty Towers, Rising Damp, Dads Army, Last Of The Summer Wine, Vicar Of Dibley, Only Fools And Horses, Miranda, Outnumbered, Porridge, Open All Hours... and really the list is genuinely endless, and not forgetting Father Ted which of course was Irish, but mainstream American comedy just seems too canned by comparison to all this unbridled humour.
Le pont des oubliés (2019)
Beaitifully crafted detective story in rural France
The location is rural France, the characters and their language are extremely authentic, with elements of Manon des Sources and Jean de Florette as the backdrop to the patient and meticulous unravelling of the plot by the persistence of the very human and compassionate female detective inspector Capitaine Marion Guichard leading the investigation. Plenty of suspense and several twists, amid the French rural scenery of the Rhône Alps.
