The Monk and the Gun (2023)
Not One Wasted Movement
I went and watched the film in the cinema, and I honestly believe that the film is amazing. With gorgeous scenery, a great story, relatable characters, and amazing acting by the cast, the movie is a true treat that has to be seen in the theatre. The one feature that stands above all is the cinematography by the director.
The cinematography is simply peak cinema, with not a single wasted movement; the movie does it's role of keeping the audience in their seats very well. The cast is distributed throughout the story without too much focus on one character (why do it when the story is of this caliber); something that we do not see in many films today.
The characters are well fleshed out, and the symbolism is quite interesting (although I don't think I got 100% of the allusions). The satire and comedic beats do not miss - again without over exaggeration - the comedy is well timed, generating a response from me and the other viewers at the cinema.
The best thing about the movie is the cinematography, and to see how well-directed it is, an experience at the cinema is not one to miss.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Assault (2021)
Seamless
This was better than the previous episodes, the action was smooth and the user of 3DCG and 2D hands drawn art has been fused seamlessly.
Jinrô gêmu (2013)
One of the better Jinro Game movies
Have to admit this movie is not perfect. The premise and storyline is the same as the manga upon which it is based. There are several liberties taken with the plot but these liberties seem to have positively affected the movie.
Airi Nishina is not a relatable character, she isn't strong or very smart. She spends most of her time in an emotional wreck; but her being in such a condition is what allows her to survive for so long. "The perpetrator" or the people/persons behind the curtains are the ones who are controlling everything. This movie isn't a tale of 'watch how the main character overcomes each obstacle and emerges victorious'. The main character is just put into a difficult situation, a situation that she has very little control over, and is forced to watch what unfolds. It isn't a story of one person but the whole lot of them.
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni: Pocket no Naka no Negaigoto (2018)
A wonderful slice of life
"Wish in a pocket" is testament to how you can make a movie - and then have the side characters brought to life, in a heart warming manner. The phrase 'heart warming' is important because it has to be differentiated from 'believable'; because believable is a feature of the mini-series. Nevertheless, the four episodes bring so much additional characteristics to all the main characters in the restaurant.
The plot expands on the side story of the anime and adds a more heavy sentiment to the relationship between Nishida and Yoshizawa. The creators did the level best as possible with the material that was provided - with much welcome additions.
Main thing to note is the amazing performance given by Honoka Matsumoto in episode three, where she lightly slaps her face to gain control of her emotions. That would be the most notable performance in the series.
Koi wa ameagari no yô ni (2018)
9
I had a long hard think before deciding to not give this movie a 10. In terms of plot and storyline, this anime-adapted film is limited and the ending does not have a mainstream 'payoff' in the sense. However, it is visible how much work and effort has gone into bring the anime characters to life - tethered by the time limit.
First, this is possibly the best example for bringing life-like anime characters. When other movies get outrage from fans for not humaninzing the characters in the anime (onto live action), Koi wa Amegeru no you ni has done it to perfection. The characters of Akira, Mr. Kondo, Nishida and all the characters in the cafeteria are done exceptionally high level. Even the supporting cast are believable and do not, in any way, appear to be standing plot points; there to support the main character's story. Best anime-to-live action portrayal I've seen so far.
