Ghostumentary (2015)
Could be really awesome if not for sound
This is a nice piece of really fun and honest narrative into the "paranormal-caught-on-tape" phenomena. The film makers are relatable and down to earth, and their investigations are earnest attempts with a healthy balance of skeptic vs believer.
The sad thing is the sound on this film is almost detrimental to my ability to truly enjoy some great story telling. Some clips are SO QUIET and the next clip will be SO LOUD. Not in a Hollywood blasting-music-and-lowered-speech-atmospheric-trickery kind of way, but more in an amateur mic work kind of way.
I was really enjoying the satirical lens on televised "ghost hunting" mixed with a search for "the truth". The sound problems took me out of their story and lowered the value of the film.
Give it a watch- have your remote handy to battle the fluctuations of volume- and enjoy what the filmmakers were trying to do.
A Dark Song (2016)
Excellent take on what occultists believe
Anyone giving a low rating was probably expecting some jumped up Hollywood "horror" like The Conjuring or Sinister. If that's what you're looking for, you'll be disappointed.
However, if you have experience with religion or enjoy learning about the real ways people believe in Magic, this is a beautiful and truthful telling of those teachings. It's atmospheric and takes you on an emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual journey. It's reflective and poignant. It requires an elevated state of mind.
You have to be in the mood for this kind of movie- but if you are, then you'll love it.
I Wouldn't Go in There (2013)
Ghost stories, history, fun storytelling through urban explorer POV
If you like creepy subtle ghost stories that are just enough to spook you and then learn the true history of why those stories might exist- this is a very entertaining series to take you on the ride. I like that the content is mapped out to us through urban exploration- where the focus is on the architecture, dilapidation, and story of place. It makes the spooky side that much more intriguing.
The pace of the story is done well in my opinion. He doesn't drag out any of those "but why would a school need jail cels" kind of questions- the next cut scene shows him performing a simple internet search to find the answer. Done. Next anecdote and exploration. The suspense, however, still lasts.
It helps that the narrators voice is very pleasant to listen too- calm, deep, direct.
Highly recommended - especially if you would enjoy some authentic storytelling after too many Hollywood jump scares.
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)
What are these negative reviews going on about?!
I went into this movie expecting nothing because of the rotten reviews, but I laughed consistently throughout. Why would anyone expect some uplifting Christmas cheer from "bad moms"?! Obviously it's going to have crass humor and unrealistic situations. If you watch it for what it is, you will enjoy the amazing talent on screen delivering well timed and clever jokes. It even has a beautifully tender (slightly cheesy) loving moment between mother and daughter. Give it a watch and enjoy it.
