The Equalizer 3 (2023)
Watch for the location, not a bad movie either!
I really liked the previous 2 films. Denzel does a great job in this one too. You don't need to have seen the other two, my companion hadn't and really enjoyed it as a stand alone film. However, I do love the 9 seconds bit that fans will be familiar with. But the stand out is the scenary, shot in Naples and the Amalfi coast the movie has that foreign film edge to it, with lots of subtitles and a mostly Italian cast. I think there might have only been 3 Americans? In the main roles at least. It is a great outing, full of the usual action, smart lines and human story, as this is, after all, what the Equalizer stands for. Go see it!
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Nothing to see here folks....move along
For those of us who grew up listening to Whitney Houston as her story was splashed across the news and into our lives as it happened, there is nothing new here. We would have been better served if the filmmakers just did a documentary with the real Whitney Houston spliced into it here and there, as I didn't find the actress believable in the role. She may have studied her mannerisms etc. But it didn't work. Whitney was a very good looking woman, who could sing, she had style (or her stylist had) but she carried it off. Usually with Biopics you forget that its an actor playing a part but this didn't happen and it was distracting. Save yourself the time and just watch the real Whitney in a few videos on YouTube.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Scarily funny
I liked this mini series. It was a nice relief from all of the very, oh so serious and tense mini series that are doing the rounds lately. Kristen Bell is very good in the role, I enjoyed The Good Place and her character is similar to the one she played in that, maybe thats what she is like. It is a real play on The Woman in the Window and a few other scenes from thrillers or horrors that you will recognise. It probably hits you a bit more if you have read the book or seen that movie. But not necessary. It is ridiculous, and that is when I laughed out loud at how absurd, without pushing it some of the scenes were, the actors play it seriously. It does twist and turn. If you like the spoof genre but with a bit more subtlety, you will enjoy this.
Shrinking (2023)
Unexpectedly Good
I was interested as I am fan of Harrison Ford. However, Jason Segal stole the show. He is trying to be the cool Dad while being uncool to a teenager but kinda fanciable to his own age group. He is believeable in the role and his uncoolness works for him.
Harrison Ford's character is a grumpy sensible mentor type with his own private issues. He plays the part with great comedic timing. The other characters work well too especially the next door neighbour played by Christa Miller who always seems to play a similar part.
Yes, at times it is a bit OTT but it is a nice diversion from reality and there are some good characters.
Avarice (2022)
Waste of time
Predicable, terrible acting, ridiculously cliched ending. As for the archery, there is almost no way that target arrows would inflict fatal injuries with only one strike. Then we have the annoying teenager who hates her parents. A troubled marriage, with the obligatory passive agressive comments. To top it all off the closing song was the last straw. I am trying to think of who would actually enjoy this film. The film does want to cash in on the political correctness of a strong female lead on the side of good and part of the home invasion gang. I watched it as I am a keen archer. Watch 2 flies on a wall instead!
Unhinged (2020)
Spilled my tea!
It's been a while since a movie had me gripped from the beginning. This tense thriller will have you shouting at the protagonist and her annoying ways at the outset but soon you will be jumping out of your seat with the tension that builds up. Ihad to have a break to calm down and make tea....before I jumped and spilled it on myself.
Under sandet (2015)
Looks beyond the uniform
This film holds your interest from the first scene. It shows how we as humans judge others but when we see beyond the stereotype we see individuals.
And Now a Word from Our Sponsor (2013)
Original and Funny
I am not sure why it rates so low on IMDB, because this film is quirky and has some funny moments. Both lead stars are very watchable and really carry the movie. It has some very subtle tender moments and not predictable as so many films are lately! Put it this way, I would watch it again!
Run Hide Fight (2020)
Don't. Even. Bother!
What a predictable, female Die Hard wannabe. The shooter was so boring the hostages probably wanted to shoot themselves! Our 'guardian angel' put more lives at risk with the usual I am a feisty teenager and you will listen and applaud what I have to say of the Dawson's Creek variety! Puleese!!!
Utopia (2013)
Quirky, colourful, funny, great characters
This is not a standard violent gangster series. So bear with it for at least the first episode, you will be hooked. From the quirky soundtrack, bizarre colour palette and random one liners, this series will have you laughing out loud as well as hiding behind your hands. The pandemic references are scarily timely for now and more worrying that this show was made in 2013! Even if you don't buy into the conspiracy theories that are abundant now, it will make you think!!
