The Spectacular Spider-Man: Market Forces (2008)
Shocking endeavours.
The best Spider-Man stories are those that easily balance the conflict between Peter Parker and Spider-Man, with the latter having some kind of repercussion on the other one. At the same time, the best Spider-Man stories are those that make emphasis on the human side of the character or human emotions that are almost universal, and this episode kind of pulls it off but not in a perfect way.
Responsablity is one of the character's defining traits and serves as the focus of the story, with Peter failing to meet his resposabilities with his friend Harry and the rest of his friends due to being to busy with his crimefighting side. The conflict escalates when the shocker makes and appearance and the show's superb animation and clever action take centerpiece.
That being said, the story lacks a bit on the human side and it's hard to empathize with the Shocker due to him not having much depth or something that interesting, though Peter gets to learn something about responsability from him, making him try to change the way he's going through life.
With more callouts and build ups to this "Big Man", a set up for Harry's resentment towards his father and Peter and the Daily Bugle forming part of Peter's life, the episode gives of a solid experience.
7/10
The Spectacular Spider-Man: Natural Selection (2008)
Wraps up the first arc in a satisfying way
The first arc of Spectacular Spider-Man has mostly been a reintroduction of sorts so all the familiar elements are set in stone and don't take up space later down the line or so they could be turn around but even then it has been a great ride full of conflicts in both of Peter's worlds.
Building off the last episode again, Dr Connors' finally gives himself in to his own investigation and injects lizard genus onto himself, giving birth to the Lizard.
Like the last episode, the way the show presents Connors' perspective is understandable. Him having no arm makes him really go obsessed with his own investigation and the moment where he pulls it off for a moment is really beautiful. His moments with his family, the really mature and releatable converstaions with his wife and the adorable interactions with his son makes the turn into the Lizard much more satisfying, even more taking into account it has been teased and built up from the last few episodes.
As for Peter, his money problems have made him really keen on getting a job, with a particular photo-taking job at that one newspaper being in his mind. The stakes are raised higher on a personal level for Peter when he realizes the conflict itself is connected to Dr Connors', leaving huge consequences that turns his life around, all while planting seeds for future events of the season.
With a trademark witty script, fantastic animation and a great understandable human conflict, it's one of the series' most effective closures to an arc. More stakes on the Spidey side of things would've made this episode a tad better, but that doesn't mean it isn't great on it's own.
7/10.
The Spectacular Spider-Man: Interactions (2008)
Interactions in Spidey land.
The second episode of Spectacular Spider-Man builds up a ton from the last one, developing more some of the threads that were part of the last episode and introducing some more.
This time around Electro is at the centerpiece and it provides some human emotion to the conflict between him and Spidey. You can't help to feel empathy for Electro as he was mainly a victim, and you understand where his reactions to his surroundings come from but the show makes ensures you also don't approve of his methods.
Again, the Spidey stuff is awesome. Well thought out, strategic battles showcasing the usual superb animation Spectacular Spider-Man offers and the way Peter's schoolife is handled is really likeable. Other plot lines are introduced to add to the bigger picture with a character called "Big Man".
That being said, the second part of this first arc of the show is both exciting, relateable, witty and really human just a tad bit rushed on the pacing.
8/10
The Spectacular Spider-Man: Survival of the Fittest (2008)
A more than solid beginning to Spidey's best outing.
*The following review contains minor references to following episodes, though no big plotlines are revealed*
Spectacular Spider-Man probably needs no introduction, in short, it's almost universally loved and it's lauded as one of the best superhero cartoons of all time.
While the pilot itself showcases the fantastic animation, tight script and clever action the show is known for, as it focuses more into the introduction of the character, it tends to retread old ground a little bit, as well as having some minor tonal shifts.
That being said, all of the main relations that drive Peter Parker are established here in a great way. Peter gets recommended to Dr. Connors' Lab to set up the plot with the Lizard, Norman Osborn's neglect to his son sets up his addiction and insecurities, etc. So the pilot itself is a great introduction, for what the show offers and has well crafted moments that portray Peter's struggles perfectly, but with some tidbits here and there and the main conflict not being that interesting, it ends up being a 7/10
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.
