I Still See You (2018)
Unique plot great twist, awesome ending
I generally spend every October watching horror movies non-stop day in and day out, and I have to say that most of the times they can get a bit boring and you really get sick of the same story being rehashed over and over. And then today I watched this movie. It was so refreshing to have a unique storyline that was fleshed out so beautifully, and characters that you actually got invested in. Not to mention a strong female character that doesn't get sexually assaulted (looking at your terrible idea of what makes good horror, hollywood). The plot twist is incredible and the ending was finally one that made me gasp rather than roll my eyes. The settings are so we'll crafted and the sound enhances every aspect in the perfect way. I'm usually a fan of very bloody horror films, but this one is clean and STILL completely engaging. Go see this asap!
I Can See Your Voice (2020)
Subverts expectations
On the surface, I could see how people would think that the show would add to the judgmental nature of our society. But after watching two episodes, it actually subverts it. It makes us face our own prejudices (which makes people uncomfortable) and shows us that what we see is not necessarily what we get in the world.
I think the show is exactly the sort of thing that we need right now to remind us that appearances are not everything, and that we need to keep an open mind moving through this new world we're living in, especially since we don't have the benefit of seeing somebody's smile or even their facial expressions anymore.
The concept is really fun, and it's so refreshing to see a cast, contestants, host and panel that isn't whitewashed (finally!) It's also inspiring to see people being brave about their singing ability (or lack thereof) and pushing themselves to do something uncomfortable...a lesson that is great to see portrayed on network television.
