Exclusive: Actress-singer Krysta Rodriguez has been cast opposite Ewan McGregor in Halston, Ryan Murphy’s Netflix limited series starring McGregor as the iconic designer. Rodriguez will play Liza Minnelli, Halston’s muse and best friend.
Little is known about Halston. In the project’s original incarnation, before Murphy came on board and made it one of the projects under his mega Netflix deal, it was written by Sharr White (The Affair) and to be directed by Dan Minahan, who worked with Murphy on another limited series about a famous designer, FX’s Versace: American Crime Story.. Halston is believed to be tracking Halston (born Roy Halston Frowick) as he leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire that’s synonymous with luxury, sex, status and fame, literally defining the era he lives in, 1970’s and ‘80’s New York — until a hostile takeover forces him...

The streets of New York City are a constantly changing, adventurous and sometimes dangerous environment. But that doesn’t bug photographer Carrie Boretz, who has been snapping the scenes and characters of the Big Apple for more 40 years.
In her new book, Street, she highlights some of her favorite images from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. From the parties with Andy Warhol at Studio 54 to covering the reactions of John Lennon’s murder, Boretz has always been immersed in the intensity of New York City. Here, she talks about her storied career.

Me and Earl and the Pixie Girl: Schreier Adapts Teen Schmaltz for Sophomore Effort
Director Jake Schreier takes on the saga of author John Green (the man responsible for 2014’s teen cancer tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars), adapting his novel Paper Towns for the big screen. Adolescent themes and returning cast mates from Josh Boone’s earlier film furthers a sort of genetic relationship between the two films, which manages to be another glossy yet glaringly inauthentic portrayal of precocious teens laying their cherished wastelands to rest as they ascend into the structured responsibility of adulthood. Fleeting moments of inspiration manage to recall, in a sort of unabashed nostalgic glee, the spontaneity behind moments managing to reach indelibly memorable heights from such an undeveloped period in lives of the generally privileged. However, Schreier, Green, and adapting screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber fail in their ability to realistically...

Premiering at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, Academy Award winning documentarian Barbara Kopple’s Running From Crazy, an exploration of the famed Hemingway family’s bout with mental illness via the perspective of actress Mariel Hemingway, went to release on Oprah Winfrey’s network Own, who executive produces. Engrossing and intimate, at least as far as its lead perspective is concerned, the film is a unique window into a famous and iconic American family, one that rivals the Kennedy’s, as is pointed out, in infamous stature.
Through the guidance of Mariel Hemingway, a spokesperson for depression issues, we’re guided through significant moments of her family’s history, mainly dealing with her two older sisters Joan “Muffet” Hemingway, and actress/model Margaux Hemingway. Like an overshadowing specter, grandfather Ernest “Papa” Hemingway is frequently mentioned, but more as the name that granted a blessing and a curse for his often troubled descendants.

Chicago – The year caught up with me. 2013 was characterized by a soft start and a strong finish, but overall there were impressive contenders throughout the year and some fine examples of great storytelling and filmmaking. Risks were taken, some truth emerged and even in more “mainstream” films, there were flashes of promise.
This is the second set of top ten 2013 films on HollywoodChicago.com, as offered by film critic Patrick McDonald. Please also sample my colleague Brian Tallerico’s Top Ten. The following films are a testament to the experiences they gave me, what they made me think about afterward and how they fulfilled that feeling – for me – of what makes a movie great.
For every film in those ten spots, there are a number of other films coming in tied at number 11 – Joe Swanberg’s sublime “Drinking Buddies” and the anarchy of “Escape From Tomorrow”; the gutsy honesty of...

Blockbuster – the one-time giant in the home video rental business which went bankrupt last September – was bought at auction this past week by Dish Network for $320 million. According to Dish, it intends to combine its wireless technology with Blockbuster’s brand name recognition, studio relationships and digital rights to re-establish Blockbuster as a player in the direct-to-home market against Netflix and newer contenders like Amazon and a Warner Bros. online rental service to be offered on Facebook.
However this plays out long-term, the auction buy is the last page in a final chapter begun back in September when Blockbuster busted. To trot out the old cliché, it’s the – everybody now — end of an era.
The business Blockbuster used to be in seemed revolutionary in its day, though it seems almost quaint now; come Friday, some delegate from the family would trot to the neighborhood video store hoping to get...

HollywoodNews.com: Another feather in Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino’s branding: The “Jersey Shore” star is in talks to partner up with the luxury gym at New York’s Plaza Hotel.
If he signs the deal, The Situation would be the face of the gym and offer personal workouts. He would also be part owner in the gym. The facility per Page Six was previously occupied by celebrity fave Radu Fitness center. That gym counted Bianca Jagger, Margaux Hemingway, Candice Bergen and Cindy Crawford among its clientele.
The Page Six source calls the gym “the most exclusive and most VIP fitness club in the United States.
“There will be a very select clientele. Members would need letters of reference, and there will be a high initiation fee. The Situation will be originating a workout program, and he’ll occasionally teach abs class himself.
“The deal could also be rolled out to other Fairmont hotels.

In a deal worth mid-six against $1 million, Paramount-based producer Christine Peters has acquired motion picture rights to the true-crime confessional Confessions of a Master Jewel Thief, from Bill Mason, a thief who preyed on the rich and famous. Peters will produce through her newly formed CFP Prods. Mason will serve as an associate producer on the project. Published last month by Villard/Random House, the memoir was co-written by Lee Gruenfeld. One of America's most infamous jewelry thieves, Mason's main conquests were the creme de la creme of celebrities of his day and included Robert Goulet, Phyllis Diller, Armand Hammer, Bob Hope, Truman Capote, Margaux Hemingway and even the Mafia. Mason lifted more than $35 million worth of jewels from his "night job" while maintaining a conventional family life during the day. Peters previously was president of Robert Evans Prods. Her new company is affiliated with Evans' shingle but has its own development fund and operates autonomously. Her credits include How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
