The phrase “faith-based drama” is one to strike fear into the hearts of all but the most devout, since it usually signals endless platitudes and piety with very little drama. There are touches of that in this real-life story, but thankfully director Jon Gunn and writers Meg Tilly and Kelly Fremon Craig have kept it to a minimum, letting the kindness and charity of the characters shine without too much sermonising. It also benefits from solid performances and a genuinely heartbreaking set-up.

Prepare to feast. Or dance. This week’s streaming debuts include two visually sumptuous films that will whet your Easter-weekend appetite.
The contender to watch this week: “The Taste of Things“
France lost out on an Oscar nomination when the country’s selection committee chose Trần Anh Hùng‘s savory romance about a venerable chef (Benoît Magimel) and a gifted cook (Juliette Binoche) instead of eventual Best Picture nominee “Anatomy of a Fall.” But even if the movie didn’t make the Best International Feature Film category, it earned an immediate spot in the culinary canon. Like the documentary “Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros,” last year’s other great food movie, “The Taste of Things” is kitchen porn. In the warmly lit countryside, the gourmands prepare veal loins, roasted vegetables, baked Alaska, and the creamiest omelet you’ve ever seen. Select theaters are still showing the film, but it’s newly available on VOD.

In Hollywood, things aren’t always what they seem. Alan Ritchson, from DC’s Titans, felt a bit overshadowed by Hilary Swank, a two-time Oscar winner, during the Ordinary Angels shoot. Even with his experience, the 41-year-old picked up on the vibe that folks thought he was a newbie.
Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher
This sheds light on the behind-the-scenes reality of Tinseltown, where even seasoned folks like Ritchson juggle fame and stay relevant. But, let’s know what really went down on set to make him feel that way. Hollywood’s got its own set of twists and turns, and the actor’s experience is a glimpse into that rollercoaster.

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” will retain its holding as the top film on domestic charts this weekend, besting a trio of new releases in the manga adaptation “Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training,” the faith-based Hilary Swank drama “Ordinary Angels” and Ethan Coen’s lesbian crime caper “Drive-Away Dolls.”
“One Love” added $3.7 million to its domestic haul on Friday, marking a modest 51% drop from its gross seven days ago. After opening on Valentine’s Day, the Bob Marley biopic has now earned a solid $61 million across its first 10 days in North American theaters. To compare against genre contemporaries, it’s pacing a bit ahead of the $50 million that “Rocketman” earned in 2019 across the same period of time, and a chunk behind 2022’s “Elvis,” which nabbed $66 million in 10 days. Worldwide, “One Love” has now surpassed $100 million.
Crunchyroll and Sony’s release of the new “Demon Slayer” entry looks to take silver.

As the news gets darker and more depressing, a triumphant “against the odds” inspired by true events underdog story may be just the cure for the late Winter doldrums. And that’s exactly what this week’s new movie promises…and pretty much delivers. It’s an ode to the “help your neighbor” spirit of small-town America (not that it’s completely absent in the bustling cities). Plus there’s a bit of spirituality (right in the title) along with some folks overcoming their own personal struggles. And as a bonus, this marks a most welcome return of an actress to the big screen, in a wide release, after earning a second Oscar almost twenty years ago. In a new “real-life” role this extraordinary actress becomes the leader of a group of Ordinary Angels.
The film’s story doesn’t start with her, though. Instead, we’re in the hospital...

Kelly Fremon Craig is among my favorite filmmakers when it comes to coming-of-age stories. Both The Edge of Seventeen and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. have marked the genre in such a way that any work coming from her immediately captures my attention. Although only contributing to the screenplay co-written with Meg Tilly – better known as an actress in Agnes of God or Psycho II – it’s enough to give Ordinary Angels two hours of my time.
Directed by Jon Gunn (The Case for Christ) – no, the filmmaker shares no affinity with James Gunn – and starring Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) and Alan Ritchson (Reacher), the film is inspired by a true story from 1994 in Louisville, Kentucky, where Michelle Schmitt, a sick child whose only chance of survival was a liver transplant, becomes dependent on the miraculous help of her community to overcome...

There will be more wide releases at the box office this weekend –three, in fact– but they’re not expected to make a dent before Legendary/Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part Two brings everybody back on March 1 with a hopeful $80M start.
Focus Features’ Ethan Coen-directed femme comedy caper Drive-Away Dolls, Sony/Crunchyroll’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -To The Hashira Training and Lionsgate/Kingdom Story’s Ordinary Angels hit marquees on Friday but Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love will smoke them all with a second weekend of $15M, about -45% down from the biopic’s 3-day of $28.6M.
The second weekend of Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web could possibly ease -55% for around $6.8M. How the heck is that? The Dakota Johnson-Sydney Sweeney thriller pic posted a Tuesday of $1.75M that was -30% off of Monday’s $2.5M. Bob Marley: One Love saw $2.9M yesterday,...

Plot: Based on a remarkable true story, centers on Sharon, a fierce but struggling hairdresser in small-town Kentucky who discovers a renewed sense of purpose when she meets Ed, a widower working hard to make ends meet for his two daughters. With his youngest daughter waiting for a liver transplant, Sharon sets her mind to helping the family and will move mountains to do it. What unfolds is the inspiring tale of faith, everyday miracles, and ordinary angels.
Review: When I first saw the trailer for Ordinary Angels, I wrote it off without a second thought as another faith-based drama designed to tug at the heartstrings and reinforce the unlimited power of God. In recent years, there has been a surge in movies like this; few have risen above the minimal viable bar for them to be considered watchable by mainstream audiences. To my surprise, the film is not an overt case for Christ,...

With a true story centered on everyday people pulling off extraordinary feats, “Ordinary Angels” can’t help but embrace the sentimentality at its core. It’s baked into its DNA, and is the reason why this compelling, heartstring-pulling drama made it to the big screen 30 years after taking place — in a time when we too are searching for light in a bleak world. Yet what lifts the picture beyond average inspirational fluff is the way director Jon Gunn and company control the slow release of its sweetness so as not to overpower. This technique, though forgivably manipulative, works to grand effect and, by the end, even cynics will be won over by the human kindness on display.

‘Ordinary Angels’ Review: Hilary Swank’s Passionate Performance Drives True Faith Based Family Drama
Lionsgate’s collaboration with faith based movie producers Kingdom Story Company has reaped boxoffice rewards for both, and with their latest, Ordinary Angels, the inspiring true story of a small Kentucky town that comes together in a historic snowstorm in order to transport a 3-year-old girl to an Omaha hospital for a life-saving liver transplant, they have another surefire heartfelt film tailor-made for audiences looking for a little uplift. This actually would have made a perfect Christmas season release but has been delayed for several months, now opening in the same February corridor where Kingdom’s surprise hit, Jesus Revolution did well last year. Midwest crowds will especially respond to a never-say-never tale that is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart in this age of division.

Those who were disappointed by the January box office will just have to hope things improve in February, the month that has just one government holiday and also a Hallmark holiday, both happening in the same week. Those holidays often lead to some of the month’s bigger releases, so things can still take an uptick. Read on for Gold Derby’s February 2024 box office preview.

This week’s streaming picks will have you seeing double. Doppelgangers are inherently terrifying, or at the very least alarming, for a variety of reasons. In mythology, a doppelganger often acts as a foreboding harbinger of bad news or luck. On a biological level, there’s something unsettling about the discovery of an unrelated person or entity sharing your face.
Then there’s the matter of identity theft, something horror exploits when it comes to doppelgangers. It’s eerie enough to see what appears to be your clone in the wild, but it’s a whole new level of scary when they attempt to take over your entire existence as their own.
This week’s streaming picks highlight the perils of doppelgangers.

Tom Holland (not the one who plays Spider-Man) was best known as an actor when he was hired to write the screenplay for a project that sounded like an insane idea: a 23-years-later sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. But somehow, Holland and director Richard Franklin managed to deliver a Psycho II (watch it Here) that is a worthy follow-up to the original. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, Holland has published – through Holland House Entertainment – a 176 page book called Oh Mother, What Have You Done?, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Psycho II.
Authored by Tom Holland and containing unpublished memoirs by late Psycho II director Richard Franklin and conversations with the film’s editor Andrew London, Oh Mother, What Have You Done? offers fans a unique
glimpse into the continuation of the beloved Psycho film franchise, which created nightmares for millions of
people showering worldwide.

One of the most beloved movies of 1983 is “The Big Chill,” starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly. Written by Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and directed by Kasdan, the film is an ensemble comedy-drama about a group of former college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of their college friends dies. Released 40 years ago on September 28, 1983, “The Big Chill” did well at the box office, making $56 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. Read on as Gold Derby celebrates “The Big Chill” 40th anniversary.

Exclusive: The Kingdom Studios and Lionsgate drama Ordinary Angels starring 2x Oscar winner Hilary Swank is departing from its Oct. 13 theatrical release date as AMC’s Taylor Swift: The New Eras Tour looks to open to at least $70M off a female-heavy audience.
Universal’s The Exorcist: The Believer seeing the crazy amount of presales at $37M+ yesterday opted to go a week earlier on Oct. 6, which is much richer release date where Joker, and Venom have launched.
No bother for Ordinary Angels which is Tbd in regards to its release date. Lionsgate runs an entirely grass roots campaign on these pics, so there’s complete flexibility and no wasted media or P&a costs. Furthermore, we understand, that Swank wants to promote the pic. So, potentially waiting out the SAG-AFTRA strike is prudent for a smaller feature such as this.

Hillary Swank rallies her entire town to help out a neighbor in the latest trailer for Lionsgate’s true-life faith-based drama “Ordinary Angels.”
The two-time Oscar winner plays a hairdresser who inserts herself into the life of a grieving widower with a critically ill daughter. The kid needs a new liver, and the dad just needs a little help. As revealed in the trailer, circumstances change when a new organ becomes available for transplant, but it requires a cross-country flight and happens to occur during a once-in-a-generation cold front.
Swank won two Best Actress Oscars, one in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry” and one in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby.” Although she never really became a bankable draw, she has made a career out of mostly top-billed leading roles in films like “Amelia,” “The Core” and “The Gift.” Moreover, she almost never found herself just playing the love interest or the lone woman in a macho melodrama,...

Christmas weekend has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the holiday festivities have to end – and since winter is here in full force, it’s definitely still fireplace weather. So it doesn’t feel like it’s too late to share the Chucky yule log video that was released by the folks at Syfy last week. The video is, sadly, geoblocked, but if you can see it you’ll find the heartwarming sight of horror icon Chucky sitting beside a fireplace – a Christmas tree nearby and stockings hung with care. And this is a video you’ll be able to keep on in the background for 70 minutes.
Chucky season 2, which aired on both Syfy and USA Network, wrapped up its eight episode run in late November with a season finale that was set on Christmas. There’s still no word on whether or not we’ll be getting...

Don Mancini has maintained his streak of character and narrative surprises in “Chucky” Season Two, especially when it comes to Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly).
While protagonists Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) contended with their ongoing fight to remove Chucky from their lives, Tiffany’s impressive journey this season proved just as complex.
The murderess dealt with the ramifications of her one-sided relationship with Nica (Fiona Dourif), unexpected party guests, motherhood, death, and the loss of her comfortable lifestyle when Jennifer Tilly gets framed for Tiffany’s murders.
Tiffany heads into the finale tonight searching for a Belle doll to escape her precarious situation. Ahead of the Season 2 finale, titled “Chucky Actually,” Bloody Disgusting exclusively spoke with Jennifer Tilly about her character’s tremendous arc this season. The actress discussed what it was like to kill her sister on screen, the stylistic flourishes she brought to her character,...

This week’s episode of “Chucky” Season 2, titled “Doll on Doll,” was easily one of the best hours of the series to date, dropping some major bombshells and a couple huge payoffs.
Warning: This Article Contains Spoilers!
For starters, “Doll on Doll” ushered in the surprising reveal that not only is Tiffany inhabiting the body of Jennifer Tilly due to the events of Seed of Chucky nearly 20 years ago, but Jennifer Tilly now resides within the body of the Tiffany doll! As you may recall, the two were swapped in Seed of Chucky, but this is the first we’ve seen of the Tilly-infused Tiffany doll.
“Doll on Doll” also revealed that the Glen/Glenda doll is still in Tiffany’s possession, and she has finally made the decision to gift it to her flesh and blood child, Glen. Tiffany’s cover has been completely blown and she’s been...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Chucky."
The "Child's Play" franchise has always been meta, but the latest episode of "Chucky" took things to a new extreme.
Last night's episode of "Chucky" was a "Very Special Episode," with our favorite foul-mouthed, pint-sized, serial killer-possessed doll taking a back seat to let Jennifer Tilly ...err Tiffany Valentine ...err Tiffany Valentine-possessed Jennifer Tilly take the center stage. Tiff and Chucky's non-binary child Glen/Glenda was put into the bodies of a set of twins the last time we saw them in "Seed of Chucky," but the non-binary duo are teens now, played simultaneously by Lachlan Watson ("Chilling Adventures of Sabrina "). The kiddos haven't seen their mother (who they believe is just Jennifer Tilly) in over a year, showing up to celebrate their birthday and bringing some extraordinary guests to help celebrate.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Death on Denial,” the fourth episode of Season 2 of “Chucky.”
Even by the wild standards that Syfy/USA Network’s “Chucky” slices and dices on a weekly basis, creator Don Mancini admitted Oct. 26’s star-studded episode was a big experiment for the horror franchise.
In a dramatic detour from the Catholic school carnage of “Chucky’s” second season, the pint-sized serial killer was sidelined in the episode to put the spotlight on his estranged wife, Tiffany — or rather her human host, Jennifer Tilly.
In the mind-bogglingly meta episode, titled “Death on Denial,” Tiffany throws a birthday party for her and Chucky’s nonbinary children, Glen and Glenda (both played by Lachlan Watson), last seen in doll form in 2004’s “Seed of Chucky” as a conflicted teen whose innocuous and murderous halfs were split into twin human bodies.

Chucky Recap: A Faux Murder Mystery Party Tees Up One Wild Bound Reunion — Plus, [Spoiler]'s Alive?!
Wednesday’s episode of Chucky was a reunion to behold, and not just for “Jennifer,” Glen and Glenda.
Not only have the twins arrived at Tiffany’s doorstep (and just as she was in the process of hiding a body and cleaning up a lake of blood, mind you), but the fourth episode of Season 2 also served as a get-together for Bound co-stars Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon and Joe Pantoliano. In pure Chucky fashion, Gershon and Pantoliano also play fictionalized versions of themselves, in addition to Tilly’s real-life sister Meg Tilly and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills‘ star Sutton Stracke.

Now that's the Chucky we know and love.
Chucky Season 2 Episode 4 was a unique hour that broke the fourth wall, introduced a bunch of celebrities, and showcased some big returns.
Off the bat, I wasn't interested in the show's attempt at bringing people from Jennifer Tilly's life into the orbit because I figured it would break the immersion of the series.
I couldn't have been more wrong because throwing Meg Tilly, Sutton Stracke, and Gina Gershon into the mix as heightened versions of themselves worked well to show that Tiffany is keeping up this ruse as the actress.
It reminded me of BH90210 in terms of the setup and how the series kept tipping the hat to the real world.
Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly have a lot of chemistry that continues to translate very well onto the screen, but I didn't peg Gershon as the butler killer.
If anything,...

The latest episode of Don Mancini’s “Chucky” begins with a brief recap of Seed of Chucky that signals a narrative shift. “Death on Denial” temporarily leaves behind the Catholic boarding school setting to pick up where we left off with Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) cleaning up after a murder just as children Glen and Glenda (both played by Lachlan Watson) arrive. Episode four goes meta with this wild family reunion and then some.
This episode focuses on Tiffany’s attempts to entertain guests while hiding a bound, gagged, and Chucky-possessed Nica (Fiona Dourif) behind her locked bedroom door, setting up a sitcom scenario, albeit with a horror twist. It’s not just Glen and Glenda that splits Tiffany’s focus, but longtime friends of actress Jennifer Tilly’s: Joe Pantoliano, Gina Gershon, Sutton Stracke, and Meg Tilly. Each brings their baggage and history with Tilly to complicate Tiffany’s attempts to keep Nica a secret.

Next week’s brand new episode of “Chucky” is titled “Death on Denial” and it’s going to be a special one for a few reasons. For starters, Don Mancini himself directed the episode, and it also brings Glen and Glenda back into the franchise for the first time since Seed of Chucky!
Glen/Glenda was of course the genderfluid child of Chucky and Tiffany, referenced in the first season of “Chucky” but not actually shown on screen since the film Seed of Chucky.
Last we saw, the original doll character had been split into two human bodies.
Additionally, Jennifer Tilly‘s sister Meg Tilly will star in “Death on Denial,” wherein Tiffany’s secrets are threatened by a surprise intervention.
Next week’s episode is being teased as a “murder-mystery party,” with special guest stars also including Joe Pantoliano, Gina Gershon, and Sutton Stracke.

The wrestling program WWE Raw airs on the USA Network and so does the Chucky TV series (which also airs on Syfy), so it makes sense that wrestler Liv Morgan wore a Chucky-inspired outfit in the ring as a bit of cross-promotion during an episode of Raw last year. But there’s another reason for Morgan’s Chucky tribute: she happens to be a fan of the killer doll, and during an interview she even said that she would love to be killed by Chucky on screen. She might get her wish, because the official Twitter account has announced that Morgan will be appearing in the October 26th episode of Chucky season 2!

There isn't a chance "Chinatown," written by Robert Towne and directed by Roman Polanski, would get made as a feature film today. Its detail-dense narrative about water rights in Southern California, intertwined with the vile dealings of incestuous industrialist Noah Cross (John Huston), would likely be expanded into a series or not made at all. It's a terrific neo-noir, and it works spectacularly for viewers with attention spans, but Towne's slow-burn narrative feels like the kind of material that gets meted out over twelve too-long episodes nowadays.
Interestingly, Towne and star Jack Nicholson did have a long-term plan for nosy private detective Jake Gittes. Unfortunately, it blew apart spectacularly when Jack Nicholson muscled through the production of the "Chinatown" sequel, "The Two Jakes." After numerous delays, Nicholson directed and rewrote portions of Towne's script, infuriating his former collaborator to the point where they did not speak for many years. None...

There's a thin line between love and war — especially when Camille and Valmont are involved. If those names are ringing a bell, then perhaps you're very well informed about classic French literature. Or maybe you just appreciate the power of an erotic thriller, because this particular romantic duo has taken to the big screen on more than one occasion.
Originating with the 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the complicated romance of Camille and Valmont has inspired countless adaptations over the years. Two of the most famous were released within a year of one another: Stephen Frears' "Dangerous Liaisons" and Miloš Forman's "Valmont." The two '80s movies boasted A-list casts, with "Dangerous Liaisons" starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Uma Thurman, while "Valmont" featured Colin Firth, Annette Bening, and Meg Tilly. Both versions stuck pretty close to the original novel, tracing the tale of two ex-lovers...

A new trailer has landed for season 2 of the awesome horror series ‘Chucky,’ in which seems our serial killer doll is about to terrorise the clergy.
In the second season, killer doll Chucky (Brad Dourif) crosses paths with archenemies, old allies and new prey as he seeks to inspire fear and mayhem wherever he goes.
After his diabolical plan to invade America’s children’s hospitals was foiled in season one, Chucky now seeks revenge on those he holds responsible: surviving teens Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson) and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), along with his ex Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) now his sworn enemy.
Meg Tilly, Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano, Tony Nappo, Lara Jean Chorostecki and Sutton Stracke also star in the new run along with other returnees like Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise and Barbara Alyn Woods. Devon Sawa will also be back playing a new character.

The bodies will continue to mount on Syfy's Chucky Season 2.
The cable network has announced that the hit drama will return with even bigger stakes on October 9, 2022.
The series will air in the 9 p.m. slot, leading into the series premiere of the freshman drama series Reginal the Vampire, an adaptation of Johnny B. Truant's Fat Vampire book series.
That series will feature Jacob Batalan (Spider-Man) in the title role.
As for Chucky, the series has a lot to unpack after the franchise-changing Chucky Season 1.
If you watch Chucky online, you know that Tiffany was revealed to be the person who told the cops about Chucky, setting up his original death.
That original death is what landed him inside one of those pesky dolls in the first place.
We also got to meet the Tiffany doll from the movies, once again, teeing up an exciting second season.

When Chucky returns in the fall for its second season, we'll be meeting Glen and Glenda.
According to Pride.com, Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) has landed the dual role, and we're sure the arrival of these characters will be exciting for the fans.
The 2004 movie Seed of Chucky introduced Glen, who set out on a mission to find their birth parents.
The journey found Glen bringing Chucky and Tiffany back from the dead, but Glen didn't have the same murderous tendencies as his parents.
Glenda had that trait, and given that they share a body, well, it caused many problems.
Tiffany previously gave them both human bodies, allowing them to live separate lives, so we're sure something dramatic will go down to bring them back to the forefront.
Gina Gershon, Meg Tilly, and Sutton Stracke have also been announced as newcomers for Chucky Season 2.
