Jessica Chastain is getting behind the mic to lead the upcoming Audible sci-fi thriller.
Premiering June 15, The Space Within features Chastain as Dr. Madeline Wyle, an acclaimed Ptsd and trauma psychiatrist who begins treating multiple patients who all seemingly have repressed memories of alien abductions. Wyle, according to Audible’s description of the project, must put her reputation and career at risk to get to the bottom of the memories and consider whether the abductions were indeed real.
The eight-episode series is the fourth — and first fiction work — coming from Audible’s four-project development and production deal with Spotlight producer Topic Studios. Previous projects included The Messenger, a series from the journalist Shiv Malik about his friendship with and later betrayal by a man who claimed to have been a former spokesperson for al-Qaida; American Isis, from journalist Trevor Aaronson about an American man who traveled to Syria to become...

When Jennifer DeLia was doing post-production on her last feature, "Billy Bates," she had a meeting in Toronto's Lighbox movie theater. After the meeting, DeLia walked into an exhibit that explored the life of Mary Pickford, widely acknowledged as Hollywood's first movie star. It was then that DeLia, who had only a passing knowledge of Pickford's role in film history, decided that a film of her life needed to be made. "I didn't know that Pickford was the pioneer that she was and that she had the journey from childhood that she had," DeLia says now. "I knew she was a silent screen legend and the first movie star. I didn't realize that she had helped make Hollywood culture as a fierce businesswoman." The film, titled "The First" and based on Eileen Whitfield's biography "Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood," is currently in development. DeLia, her producer Julie Pacino and co-writer Josh Fagin.

He might not be part of the Boardwalk Empire cast any more, but Michael Pitt isn’t sitting around the house eating crisps and watching the Paralympics. He’s signed on to The First, which will chronicle the life story of legendary actress Mary Pickford. Jennifer DeLia is directing the film from Josh Fagin’s script, itself adapted from Eileen Whitfield’s biography Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood.Born in Toronto as Gladys Marie Smith, Pickford’s life was certainly an interesting one. An actor in plays and musicals from an early age, she nearly gave up on her aspirations when the family suffered six impoverished years on the road. But a combination of luck and real talent saw her working with Cecil B DeMille (when he was an unknown actor) and later Dw Griffith, who gave Pickford her first big screen break. Eventually, she became a huge international...

Just a few weeks ago, we reported that producers Jennifer DeLia and Julie Pacino were working on the upcoming biopic of silent era movie star Mary Pickford. They’ve now secured a leading lady — Lily Rabe (American Horror Story) — and spent their time in Cannes searching for actors to play the various men in her life.
According to Forbes (via ThePlaylist), the producers have been swept away by Jude Law, whom they want to play the role of Pickford‘s husband and silent movie star Douglas Fairbanks. He was known for playing his swashbuckling roles in films such as, The Thief of Bagdad, Robin Hood as well as The Mark of Zorro. The pair were married in 1920, until their divorce in 1936. Law will just need to add a thin mustache in order to resemble the actor who was once dubbed “The King of Hollywood.”

Quite often, the Oscar-winning success of a film will lead to studios jumping over themselves to greenlight anything they have in the works that might be vaguely similar. "Slumdog Millionaire," for instance, led to development on a number of India-set projects, including the current sleeper hit "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." "The King's Speech," meanwhile, has led to royal-related projects, from "W.E." and "Hyde Park On Hudson" to "Girls' Night Out" becoming quite the hot property.
But despite breathless, idiotic headlines asking if the success of "The Artist" meant that the era of sound film was over, the world of silent film hasn't yet been become the latest hot trend -- no one's asked Guy Maddin to direct "Die Hard 5" or anything. But there is one film that's coming together that promises to look at some of silent era's best known stars, and is assembling a pretty impressive selection of talent.

If you either recognize Lily Rabe as the tortured Nora Montgomery from American Horror Story or Deborah Lehrman from All Good Things, there’s no denying that she has an uncanny resemblance to the legendary actress Mary Pickford. Coming off the fairly generic cop drama Pride and Glory, director Gavin O’Connor surprised just about everyone with his emotionally-packed story of family and Mma fighting in last year’s Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton-starrer Warrior. He’s now looking towards his next project and it might send him to Japan.
Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has signed the director for a thriller titled Yakuza. The film follows a CIA-esque intelligence expert who gets connected in with the dangerous mafia of Japan called the yakuza. He links up with a godfather baddie and things get even worse from there, all in the “toxic landscape of post-tsunami Japan.”
O’Connor will also take a stab at the script with Josh Fagin, which originated with Aaron & Matthew Benay and was since passed to Chap Taylor. In other words, it’s like any Hollywood production. This is actually an enticing project,...

After the debut of last year’s criminally underseen and severely underrated Warrior, writer and director Gavin O'Connor did manage to find one major silver lining – the adoration of scads of brand new fans who loved his film and wanted to see more of his work. Fortunately, while Warrior went without much of the notice it deserved, O’Connor has not, as the filmmaker has been steadily lining up work in the months since the film hit theaters. Next up, Universal Pictures has picked the director to helm Yakuza, “a contemporary Japan-set thriller” that focuses on “an American intelligence expert who becomes embroiled in the affairs of a notorious yakuza godfather and finds himself plunged into the violent criminal underworld and toxic landscape of post-tsunami Japan.” The film’s script was penned by Chap Taylor (Changing Lanes), but O’Connor will now rewrite it, along with Josh Fagin. Even though I don't watch Mma or any sort of martial arts, Gavin O'Connor's Warrior was one of my favorite movies of 2011. It's a great sports drama which featured fantastic performances from Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy, and Nick Nolte. Deadline reports that O'Connor has found a new project, a contemporary Japanese crime thriller called Yakuza which is about - you guessed it - the Japanese equivalent to the mafia. The plot follows an American intelligence guru who gets in over his head dealing with the head of the crime syndicate, slipping even deeper into the seedy underworld of the Japanese criminal organization. O'Connor can do some truly excellent work when he's given the right amount of control, so I'm happy to hear that he and producer Josh Fagin will be rewriting Chap Taylor's original script for Yakuza. This project sounds much closer to Pride and Glory than Miracle,...

So are yakuza flicks the hot new trend in Hollywood or are those Far East markets more important than ever? Probably a bit of both. Earlier this year, "Safe House" helmer signed up to direct the yakuza crime flick "The Outsider" at Warner Bros., and now a rival project of sorts is gearing up.
"Warrior" helmer Gavin O'Connor will get behind the camera for the clearly named "Yakuza" for the suits at Universal. Originally penned by Chap Taylor ("Changing Lanes"), with O'Connor and Josh Fagin ("Pride & Glory") to rewrite, the story centers on an American intelligence officer who gets caught up in the post-tsunami underworld of Japan, mixing it up with a yakuza godfather. So yeah, that's pretty vague, but it's all we got for now. O'Connor certainly is no stranger to men squaring off mentally, emotionally or physically and he's a pretty solid choice by producer Brian Grazer to direct the flick.

Perhaps the first real movie star, Mary Pickford got her start in the moving pictures back in 1909. She was 17 at the time, and the rest of her life would be dedicated to the crafts of acting, writing and producing. She’s probably best remembered for her starring role in Coquette, for which she won the Oscar in 1929. Of course, it helps that she was a founder of the Academy. According to Collider, Poverty Row Entertainment is going to give this titan her due. The production house acquired rights to “Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood” by Eileen Whitfield, and they’ve put together a team of director Jennifer DeLia (Billy Bates, I Am an Island) and writer Josh Fagin. It’s fantastic to see something like this being made, and it fits perfectly into a new mode where filmmakers are highly interested in other filmmakers. Now, who do you get to play her?...
