When it was announced that producer Elliott Kastner had succeeded in signing both Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson for the 1976 Western, "The Missouri Breaks", the project was viewed as a "can't miss" at the international box-office. This would be Brando's first film since his back-to-back triumphs in "The Godfather" and "Last Tango in Paris" and Nicholson had just won the Best Actor Oscar for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". The two Hollywood icons were actually neighbors who lived next door to each other, but they had never previously teamed for a film project. Kastner, whose prowess as a street-wise guy who used unorthodox methods to get films off the ground, had used a clever tactic to sign up both superstars: he told each man that the other had already committed to the project, when, in fact, neither had. With Brando and Nicholson aboard, Kastner hired a respected director,...

Of all the Masters of Horror, none are as singular as the great Larry Cohen. Many horror directors have made great movies that are identifiable as their own either stylistically or thematically (or many times both), but Cohen’s films truly could not be made by anyone else. They don’t necessarily have the technical sheen of Carpenter or the primal, confrontational quality of early Craven, but no one else in the genre combines inspired premises with subversive humor, political commentary, offbeat dialogue, and a specific feel for his locations – most commonly New York, which lives and breathes in Larry Cohen’s movies in a way it rarely does in any other filmmaker’s work. He’s a genuine one-of-a-kind treasure, and seeing his filmography reassessed and celebrated either in the documentary King Cohen or with special edition Blu-rays for movies of his such as Q: The Winged Serpent and The Stuff.

In the wake of the massive hit that was Jaws (1975), studios were foaming at the mouth to replicate its success. Of course, their idea was to take everything that they thought made Jaws a winner and put it in a different setting. Here’s a few that were cranked out by the dream machine: Jaws on Land (Grizzly), Micro-Jaws (Piranha), Jaws, Back to the Water (Orca), Jaws, Back to the Water Again, with Feeling (Jaws II) , and our flick du jour, the little engine that could, Jaws on Wheels – The Car (1977) .
In actuality, Steven Spielberg made Jaws on Wheels before he made Jaws, with the relentless cat and mousecapades of Duel (1971). However, this was 1977 and it was time for an upgrade. Released by Universal in May, The Car was (naturally) laughed off the screen by the critics, and why wouldn’t it be? A demonic vehicle terrorizing a...

Arthur Penn’s notorious, arguably ‘revisionist’ Western The Missouri Breaks makes it to Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber, with packaging that keeps the film’s initial infamous discrepancies alive and well with star Marlon Brando’s name retaining top billing. Though it would be Brando’s last sizeable role, the film’s main protagonist is really Jack Nicholson as a matter-of-fact horse thief who runs up against a prosperous man who holds himself above the law by failing to recognize that the rest of the country’s outlying frontiers have them.
The term revisionist is problematic in reference to Penn’s film, though it attempts to make us sympathize with a villain positioned against a civilized businessman who’s nearly as irredeemable. Two wrongs don’t make a right, so if anything, Penn’s adaptation of Thomas McGuane’s script is anarchist at best. Plagued with a troubled production thanks...

★★☆☆☆ Elliot Silverstein's 1977 cult horror The Car, which stars James Brolin, Kathleen Lloyd, John Marley and Ronny Cox, is one of those obscure films which many people claim to have heard of, but few have ever seen. Something with four wheels, a high-powered engine and the soul of the devil, is hunting down innocent people on the desolate highways and isolated open spaces of the dusty Utah desert. Terrorised by this limo from Hell the inhabitants of the small town of Santa Ynez, under the leadership of local law man Captain Wade Parent (Brolin), decide to fight back with catastrophic results for those who survive.
It would be so convenient to dismiss this banal, would-be chiller as an outright hoax - a hapless attempt to raise goosebumps through a series of pseudo grisly road accidents at the wheels of a possessed car. At least it would be if the film...

They said it couldn’t be done. A fifth year of 31 Days of Horror? 31 more terror, gore and shower scene-filled movies worth highlighting? But Rejects always say die and never back away from a challenge (unless you count that time Luke Mullen was challenged to shave off part of his beard), so we’ve rounded up the horror fans among us and put together another month’s worth of genre fun. Enjoy! Synopsis: The small mountain town of Santa Ynez has got a bit of a problem with road rage. More specifically some raging lunatic in a Lincoln Continental Mark III is mowing down pedestrians left and right. The local police department, led by debonairly mustachioed James Brolin, is doing everything they can to identify the psychotic driver of this death machine and put an end to his maniacal joy ride. As the roadkill count rises, a horrifying revelation comes to light: there is no driver. Killer...

So, Sam Fox got herself evicted from the I’m A Celebrity jungle. She was the third celeb to leave after a three-way eviction with Sabrina Washington and Jimmy White.
She might not have won the 2009 series, but in my humble opinion, Samantha Fox totally reinvented herself in two weeks in the jungle. Let’s take a retrospective look at her career to see what I mean…
The Glamour Years
Ah, Sam. I remember her Page Free days well. Didn’t fancy her though, I was more a Kathy Lloyd man myself (look her up, gents), but the Sam Fox of Page 3 was a brassy, fun-lovin’ gel as you can see from the picture.
It was the topless modelling that made Sam a household name. But I think the public loved her…
