A major A-list star is in talks for a key role in Universal Pictures' upcoming Jurassic World movie, but if he signs on, it will leave a huge question mark over a long in-development Marvel Studios reboot.
THR reports that Marhershala Ali is negotiating to star in the fourth Jurassic World film alongside lead Scarlett Johansson. Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo are also on board in supporting roles, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is set to helm.
Production is said to be gearing up for mid-June in London... which is also around the time Blade is (or was) expected to begin filming.
The trade report doesn't mention Blade, but it seems highly unlikely that Ali would be lining up this Jw role if he was still planning to play the Daywalker - unless the MCU project has been hit with yet...

We’ve been waiting a few years to see if and when the Marvel Cinematic Universe Blade reboot that’s set to star Mahershala Ali of Green Book is going to go into production – and while we continue to wait, Ali is in talks to join former MCU star Scarlett Johansson in the new Jurassic World movie that’s in the works at Universal! As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Ali tends to be very selective and usually avoids Hollywood blockbuster-type projects (aside from Blade), so getting him to sign on for a role would be a big “get” for this project.
If Ali’s deal closes, he’ll be sharing the screen with Johansson (Black Widow), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Rupert Friend (Anatomy of a Scandal), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), and a bunch of hungry dinosaurs. The Oscar-winning actor is in talks to join the new “Jurassic World” sequel, which is in development at Universal. Once he signs on the dotted line, he’ll join the already announced cast of Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Rupert Friend.

Mahershala Ali, the two-time Oscar winner who was last seen in Netflix’s hit thriller Leave the World Behind, is in talks to join Scarlett Johansson in Universal’s new Jurassic World feature.
Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo are already on the manifest for the project that is stomping toward a production start in mid-June in London with Gareth Edwards in the director’s chair.
The studio is keeping plot details hidden in a can of Barbasol. David Koepp, the original screenwriter of Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), penned the script for the new installment.
Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, who have shepherded the modern Jurassic franchise, will produce through Kennedy/Marshall. Steven Spielberg, who kicked off the franchise with Jurassic Park, is exec producing through Amblin Entertainment.
Universal has set a theatrical release of July 2, 2025, which means it will be hustling like a velociraptor in postproduction.

If Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer on most Americans’ calendars, then it makes sense that the real tentpole kicking off tent season for a lot of people is not “Furiosa” or “Garfield” but “The Beach Boys,” a streaming documentary devoted to the least wintery group of all time.
The Disney+ film, co-directed by music-doc stalwarts Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, focuses on the first decade and a half, in the 1960s and ’70s, of the career of the rock band that still might rightfully be considered America’s greatest all-time group. It starts with their unusual, pre-Beatles melding of complex Four Freshmen harmonies with surf music and themes; continues on through the ground-breaking work of the “Pet Sounds” era that led to a friendly rivalry with the Beatles; covers the complicated years when musical architect Brian Wilson physically and psychologically retreated, leaving the group to seek...

The Beach Boys are back.
The seminal American band, responsible for such tunes classics as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Good Vibrations,” originally consisting of brother Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, are getting the feature-length rock doc treatment. And with good reason – the story of The Beach Boys, a band known for their sunny disposition, is fraught with tragedy, disloyalty and acrimony. But all of that pain went into their music, creating something simultaneously euphoric and melancholy. And it will all make for a very juicy documentary – just in time for summer!
When does “The Beach Boys” come out?
“The Beach Boys” premiered Friday, May 24. Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer.

When you sit down to watch a documentary about the Beach Boys, you know what you want: to be immersed in the California dreamin’ of the group’s early surfin’-hit days, in the jaunty beauty of songs like “I Get Around” and “Help Me Rhonda” and “All Summer Long,” and in the story of how Brian Wilson began to figure out a way to turn pop songs into miniature symphonies. Kicking off the start of Summer with the big Memorial Day weekend, a new documentary poses the question: What’s the “go-to” music for this season? Well, for the past 63 years, it’s been these pop icons out of Hawthorne, California, of course. Their signature songs invoke memories of ocean waves hitting the sand as eager athletes run through the foam with their trusty boards. Interestingly only one member of the original band surfed, though when watching a blonde adonis catching a “tasty wave”, you automatically, in your head, recall the sweet infectious harmonies of The Beach Boys.
After opening with glorious footage of an electric 1975 outdoor concert (naturally in the bright Summer sun), the doc springs back 15 or so years to the modest suburban home on 119th Street when the eldest Wilson brother Brian became fascinated by the careful vocal craftsmanship of the Four Freshmen along with other musical acts.

They were ‘America’s band’, with a run of golden-hued songs – but Disney’s documentary ignores the darker side of their extraordinary story
Early on in this latest of Disney’s stream of blockbuster rock documentaries, there is a brief but telling moment. It is July 1976, the year of the US bicentennial, and the Beach Boys are taking the stage before a vast stadium of cheering fans in Anaheim, California. It is ostensibly a moment of triumph for “America’s band”, as the announcer calls them. Over the preceding couple of years, the Beach Boys’ long-waning commercial fortunes have been unexpectedly restored by a chart-topping compilation of their early hits called Endless Summer. Moreover, the band’s errant mastermind Brian Wilson has been reputedly restored to full fitness after years of drug abuse and mental health problems (“Brian Is Back!” claims a promotional campaign that summer). “I like it, I like it,...

Friend in a big-budget blockbuster? Maybe it was bound to happen. Other recent roles include the Disney+ limited series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and the Apple TV+ series “High Desert.”
Meanwhile, Universal is moving fast...

With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

Prior to directing "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" in 1989, Jeremiah S. Chechik had overseen many, many TV commercials, as well as the music videos for Van Halen's "When It's Love" and Hall & Oates' "Downtown Life." Chechik knew the commercial world well, having begun his career as a fashion photographer for Vogue, and having worked as a designer. After "Christmas Vacation," his career flourished, and he turned out many notable, high-profile films like "Benny & Joon," "Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill," the English-language remake of "Diabolique," and the sexy film adaptation of "The Avengers." After that, he moved mostly into TV, and has directed dozens of episodes of many, many acclaimed shows.
His movement from music videos into feature films, however, began in an unlikely way, and Chechik credits his big break on a flippant, sarcastic comment made by master director Stanley Kubrick. It seems that Kubrick, when...

Hollywood spent the weekend paying tribute to Roger Corman, the independent filmmaking legend who died last Thursday at age 98.
Corman, known during his time as the “King of the B’s,” was a beloved producer and director who helped boost careers for names such as Jack Nicholson, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Jonathan Demme, Gale Anne Hurd and James Cameron.
“He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him,” Corman’s family said in a statement. “When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that.’”
In response to news of Corman’s death, many who knew and worked with the filmmaker paid tribute to him online. “A great movie maker and mentor,” Howard wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “When I was 23 he gave me my 1st shot at directing. He launched many careers & quietly lead our industry in important ways.

Cinematically speaking, spiders are having a miniature moment. On April 12, 2024, fans of creature features were treated to Kiah Roache-Turner's "Sting," a film about an alien spider that grows to an enormous size and terrorizes the denizens of a run-down apartment building. Then, on April 26, the United States was granted access to Sébastien Vanicek's "Infested" (French title: "Vermines"), a film about many spiders that grow to enormous sizes and terrorize the denizens of a run-down apartment building. These two films, of course, came hot on the heels of the February release of "Madame Web," the best Spider-Man-adjacent, non-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-related mid-budget clairvoyance caper film ever made.
Children of the '90s may be getting flashbacks to the glories of Frank Marshall's 1990 spider horror/comedy "Arachnophobia," one of the more exciting mainstream horror films of its era. In "Arachnophobia," a venomous Venezuelan spider is accidentally shipped to the United States,...

Being from the Midwest myself (and even facing tornado warnings in the past few weeks), it seems that the severe storms will be hitting no matter what as the spiritual sequel to Twister touches down in theaters this July. This year has seen some crazy tornadic activity for states like Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. However, Lee Issac Chung’s Twisters is taking them to a whole new level. Universal Pictures has just released the new three-minute trailer for the summer thrill ride, looking to outdo any of the cyclones that Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt encountered in the 1996 original. This time Daisy Edgar-Jones partners up with the “Tornado Wrangler,” played by Glen Powell.
The official synopsis reads, “Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.

There are a lot of great moments in Steven Spielberg's 1981 action-adventure film "Raiders of the Lost Ark," but nothing quite comes close to the film's intense climax. After following archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and feisty bar owner Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) on their journey to try and stop the Nazis from stealing a biblical artifact, said Nazis actually manage to open the artifact — the Ark of the Covenant, the holy box that once held the Tablets of the Law, which contained the ten commandments passed down to Moses by God in the old testament. They open the box to try and get a peek at what's inside, only to have their Nazi faces melted right off like a bunch of action figures hit with a blowtorch. It's one of the most satisfying moments in cinema history, but according to Spielberg, it was also pretty much done by the seat of his pants.

Now the full trailer for the upcoming Netflix animated series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory – which serves as a follow-up to the animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous – reveals that Ortega’s Camp Cretaceous character Brooklynn has been killed off! The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.
With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.
Stereophonic‘s surprisingly strong performance even included a best score nomination despite it being a play.
In the best musical category, Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were nominated, alongside the dance-based show Illionise, with music from Sufjan Stevens’ album and a book by Justin Peck and Jackie Sibblies Drury; Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffrage movement with a score and book by Shaina Taub; and Water for Elephants, based on the 2006 novel,...
