Largely rejected upon its release back in 1987, the live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe (watch it Here) has gathered a cult following over the decades, and elements of the film have even been worked into the recent animated Netflix shows Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution. On April 17th, Umbrella Home Entertainment in Australia will be giving the film a collector’s edition Blu-ray release – and copies are available for pre-order Here! (Just make sure you have the ability to play Region B Blu-rays before ordering one.)

The character of Emily was a major hurdle for Ross and Rachel’s relationship on Friends, but she was also apparently a challenge for the producers. James Burrows, who directed numerous episodes of the hit series, wrote in his new memoir that actress Helen Baxendale and cast member David Schwimmer struggled with chemistry.
“She was nice, but not particularly funny,” Burrows wrote in Directed by James Burrows, out now. “Schwimmer had no one to bounce off. It was like clapping with one hand.”
He continued, “In sitcoms and any type of romantic comedy,...

NBC network dominated the 35th annual Primetime Emmys, with a groundbreaking drama continuing a winning streak, a little-watched sitcom making its name known and another sitcom proving the network might have cancelled it too soon. Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers hosted the event on September 25, 1983. Rivers claimed she had waited nine years for an invitation to the Emmys, and would be wearing every dress she owed (which ended up being nine), and Murphy was excited about his first nomination. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1983.
Two years prior, a little police drama had debuted, changing television with its realism and continuing storylines involving the personal lives of the characters. “Hill Street Blues” not only dominated the Nielsen ratings, but it won numerous Emmys throughout its run. This year would mark its third of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories, winning over “Cagney & Lacey,” “Fame,” “Magnum, P.I.” and “St. Elsewhere.

Mark Harmon has an impressive resumé spanning decades. The actor is best known for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the long-running police procedural NCIS. However, before he led the team at NCIS, he played a crucial role that was ahead of its time. Here’s how Mark Harmon’s role in St. Elsewhere was groundbreaking in the ’80s.

St. Elsewhere was a medical drama set at the fictional St. Eligius Hospital, which earned the nickname “St. Elsewhere” due to its status as a lesser-equipped medical facility. (Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Friends" Season 6, episode 9 "The One Where Ross Got High"
Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max
The Pitch: It's Thanksgiving and you know what that means. It's time to eat all the things, complain about how you're going to have to be rolled out of the house, pass out on the couch, and discuss who screwed up what with the feast. Okay, maybe not that last part or you'll get stabbed with a turkey carving knife, but if you're a character on a sitcom, you don't have to worry about these things. You just really shouldn't try Rachel's dessert.
Yes, I'm talking about "Friends" season 6, episode 9, "The One Where Ross Got High." "Friends" is dated. There is no doubt about that.

On Oct. 26, 1982, NBC introduced St. Elsewhere to TV audiences. The ensemble medical drama went on to run for six seasons on the network. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review, as included in a TeleVisions column, is below:
Passing in Review: St. Elsewhere (NBC, Tuesday, 10-11 p.m.) The critics are having a field day. “Well written,” they’ve called it. “Touching.” “Gritty.” And a variety of other words and phrases all meant to tell us that St. Elsewhere, the new hour-long slice-of-life medical drama on NBC, is topnotch television. They’ve compared it to that other prized hour of TV drama, Hill Street Blues. And well they should. Both come from Mtm Enterprises, and both have a similar type of stark realism base which at once repels and attracts — like much of reality. Before “ER,” “Chicago Hope” and “The Good Doctor,” there was a great little medical drama called “St. Elsewhere.” Today, it’s not unusual to have topics like rape, abortion, domestic abuse, breast cancer discussed. But 40 years ago, such issues were taboo. Much as “Hill St. Blues” revolutionized police dramas in the early 1980s, “St. Elsewhere” pushed boundaries and opened discussions about issues that affected viewers everywhere.
“St. Elsewhere” refers to hospitals who take in the patients no other hospital wants to deal with; the fictitious St. Eligius is such an institution in Boston, a teaching hospital with more budget issues than personnel. But within the crumbling walls is a staff of doctors and nurses who struggle to provide the best care possible for the string of often difficult to diagnose, difficult to understand and difficult to tolerate patients who come through the doors, while balancing their personal lives and own...

Trailblazing medical drama series “St. Elsewhere” celebrates its 40th anniversary on October 26. Gold Derby recently gathered together 10 cast members of the NBC program for a special reunion. All episodes from the six-season original run are now available for streaming on Hulu.
The series never had the greatest of overall ratings but was saved time and again by the Peacock network due to its Emmy wins and nominations, plus excellent demographics among the 18-49 viewers who advertisers coveted. The show was set at the fictional Boston hospital St. Eligius (nicknamed St. Elsewhere because its rundown conditions), tackling topical medical subjects with unexpected deaths among the patients and staff members throughout the six seasons airing 1982-1988.

Naomi Grossman is one of the most popular “American Horror Story” guest stars ever, but she hasn’t been seen on the FX limited series since 2018. If Ryan Murphy called her up to ask her to star on the upcoming 11th season, would she be game? “Well of course!” Grossman recently told me exclusively. “What fool actor wouldn’t? I come when I’m called, you know? I would say yes. Where? When?”
Grossman’s fan-fave character Pepper is in the “AHS” record books for being the first character to appear in multiple seasons. After 17 years off the air, the cast of Friends assembled for Friends: The Reunion, which launched on Thursday.
The special is now streaming on HBO Max, and there were many big reveals about the beloved comedy series.
In this reboot-heavy world, many have pondered whether a scripted update of the series could come to pass, but it sounds like it will never happen.
Lisa Kudrow spoke for her castmates by explaining a potential reboot:
It’s all up to Marta and David, and I once heard them say, and I completely agree, that they ended the show very nicely.
They would have to unravel all of those good things in order for there to be stories.
Come again, Lisa?
That's not a very definite answer, but it doesn't rule one out, meaning that the fans who want more from Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer...

Warning: This post contains spoilers for “Friends: The Reunion”
For a special that was filmed and edited much faster than most are, “Friends: The Reunion” managed to bring in a lot of fan-favorites, either in person or via Zoom. That said, there were still some notable absences, like Phoebe’s husband Mike, played by Paul Rudd, and Ross’ son Ben, played by Cole Sprouse. So why weren’t those two involved?
“Well, we couldn’t have everybody on, because it’s only an hour and 45 minutes. And you’ve got to pay attention — the main nub of the show has got to be about the six cast members,” Ben Winston, director of the HBO Max reunion special, told TheWrap. “So you can’t have too many cameos because of course, there were hundreds of amazing people who were in ‘Friends’ over the years. Sadly, we couldn’t get everybody in.

They’re really back, for better or worse.
Here’s the skinny: If you are one of the millions of Friends fans out there, then the Friends: The Reunion special debuting Thursday on HBO Max is exactly the fix you have been craving since the NBC sitcom went off the air in 2004. However, if you don’t have a standing order at Central Perk, you’ll probably want to skip the much-hyped, almost two-hour-long shindig that is way more filler than killer, to put it kindly.
Long the Stone Temple Pilots of sitcoms, the comedy series starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer had the rare privilege of concluding on its own terms back in the George W. May 27 will be a throwback Thursday to Must-See TV. The long-awaited “Friends” reunion special will premiere on HBO Max, which also just so happened to have launched on that date one year ago. The special is not a new episode, so do not expect to see where Ross and Rachel are 17 years later or what happened to Joey after “Joey” was canceled (remember “Joey”?).
The reunion is just that: a reunion between the six stars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer — at their home for 10 years, the original Stage 24 soundstage (renamed the “The Friends Stage” in 2004 when the series ended), on the Warner Bros. lot, reminiscing about their iconic series with appearances from those who were part of it and some who were not but are presumably fans. After seemingly endless delays, the Friends reunion is finally here! Debuting this month on HBO Max, the special will reunite the original cast of the iconic sitcom, finally together after several delays in filming. The main cause of the delay is pretty simple: the Covid-19 pandemic kicked in last year just before the originally planned filming dates. So when did they end up filming after all?
According to TMZ, the reunion was shot in early April, spanning about three days of filming on the Warner Bros. studio lot. The filming apparently took place across indoor and outdoor sets, including some of the iconic sets from the original show. TMZ also reported that a live audience participated in some of the filming, but instead of allowing the general public on set, the audience consisted of pre-screened, Covid-tested union actors who were hired as extras for the shoot.

He was a man who was full of stories and full of life. That’s how “St. Elsewhere” showrunner Tom Fontana remembered his dear friend Norman Lloyd, the legendary actor who died Tuesday at the age of 106.
Lloyd, who died at his home in Los Angeles, was a raconteur who loved to regale listeners with amusing anecdotes about his decades in the industry. For years, whenever Fontana would visit Los Angeles, he made a point of having dinner with his former star.
“He was one of the great storytellers I’ve ever known,” Fontana told Variety. “He just had great stories about Chaplin and (Orson) Welles and Bertolt Brecht and Charles Laughton. He worked with everybody.”
Lloyd was a cornerstone of “St. Elsewhere” in the role of the wise physician Dr. Donald Auschlander, who battled cancer from the 1982 pilot episode on. Originally, the character was to have died in episode...

For 10 years, we laughed along with our favorite six “Friends” as they navigated through romances, job changes and babies. But as much as we love Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey, their funniest moments were often helped along by some unforgettable guest stars – many of whom went on to receive Emmy nominations and wins.
Throughout the decade, dozens of actors from television and film, were eager to appear on this hot show. Some popped up often enough that they seemed like part of the show, like Maggie Wheeler (“Janice”) or Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles (Jack and Judy Geller). Others only appeared once or twice, but left a lasting impression, like Bruce Willis, Christina Applegate, Reese Witherspoon and Brad Pitt.

Friends may have ended its 10-season run in 2004, but an eagle-eyed fan on TikTok only now caught an editing mistake you'll have to see to believe. TikTok user @bronniiieee shared a video clip from the Friends episode "The One in Massapequa," in which Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) pretend to be a married couple at an anniversary party for Ross' parents, played by Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles. In the scene @bronniieee shared, Ross and Rachel are speaking to Ross' dad, when suddenly the scene cuts and someone else is standing in Gould's place. An edited version of this story about “An Emmy for Megan” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
A lot has happened with Megan Amram in the past year. Her short-form comedy series “An Emmy for Megan,” a very funny deconstruction of Emmy rules that claims to exist solely to win its creator a golden statuette, landed two nominations and sent her to the Emmys — where she lost in the short-form series category to “James Corden’s James Corden,” and in the short-form acting category to 83-year-old Christina Pickles.
In the aftermath of that hard luck, the Emmys made a couple of rule changes in the shorts categories, including instituting a two-minute minimum on the length of short-form episodes after one of last year’s “Emmy for Megan” episodes pointed out that no minimum length existed.

Jonathan Banks might finally win an Emmy for playing Mike Ehrmantraut — but in a category not many of us expected: Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series Actor.
As Gold Derby exclusively revealed, in addition to submitting Banks in his usual category of Best Drama Supporting Actor for “Better Call Saul,” AMC is also entering him in the short form actor race for “Madrigal Electromotive Employee Training,” a “Better Call Saul” companion online series that is also being submitted for Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. The show (watch above) features Mike offering tips and sharing his wisdom to new Madrigal employees. “Madrigal” is the second season, if you will, of “Saul”‘s online training series; the first, “Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training,” which starred Giancarlo Esposito‘s Gus Fring and aired alongside Season 3, won Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2017.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” emerged with momentum after the first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
“Game of Thrones” went into the night as the pace-setter, having nabbed 22 Emmy nominations. “Thrones” finished out the night with seven wins. FX’s limited series “Gianni Versace” bagged four wins — including for contemporary costumes, appropriately enough.
The haul for “Thrones” helped HBO maintain a comfortable lead among networks with 13 wins so far, followed by 10 for Netflix and seven for FX. The network race is closely watched this year because Netflix elbowed HBO out of the top spot in total nominations for the first time in 18 years.
Hulu and NBC both claimed four awards during the nearly three-hour ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, while Amazon took home three. Another 40-plus awards will be handed out Sunday night,...

A version of this story about Christina Pickles first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
‘When you’re old you have to be funny,” said Christina Pickles, who at the age of 83 has landed her seventh Emmy nomination, and her first in 23 years, for Season 2 of the comedic web series “Break a Hip.” “I figured that out quite a long time ago.”
The British-born, U.S.-based actress wasn’t always known for being funny: Her first five Emmy nominations came in the 1980s for the seminal hospital show “St. Elsewhere,” in which her performance as nurse Helen Rosenthal kept sending her to the ceremony “with my little speech that I never got to give.”
She landed a sixth nomination in 1995 for her recurring guest spot on an iconic show from a different era, “Friends,” where she played the mother to Courteney Cox and David Schwimmer’s characters.

“We’re so lucky to work in TV,” added Kressley, the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge, on an uncharacteristically serious note. “It’s really having a renaissance right now and so inclusive and diverse.”
However, the “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” veteran couldn’t resist a jab at the revised Fab Five’s Netflix reboot. “I’m thrilled that they’re nominated, but it was a little more groundbreaking back when we won an Emmy in 2004,” he said.

A version of this story about Megan Amram first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Watching last year’s Emmys, Megan Amram (whose day job is writing for “The Good Place”) decided that she could win one in the Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category. So she filmed a web series, “An Emmy for Megan,” entirely about her desire to win an Emmy. So far, so good: She was nominated for two Emmys, one for acting and one for producing.
Talking to her about this requires becoming her straight man.
Congratulations. It would have been awful to do the whole web series and then not get a nomination.
I know. But part of me thought it’d be exciting either way. Because either I get the nomination, which is one step closer to what I really want, or I don’t,...

Melvin Jackson Jr. is nominated for Best Short Form Actor at the Emmys for playing himself in “This Eddie Murphy Role is Mine, Not Yours,” on which he also served as co-writer, executive producer and casting director. It was actually the potential for Emmy recognition that finally spurred Jackson to make the web series, having conceived of the project three years ago. “I told my friends, ‘Hey, I want to shoot this and submit it for Emmy consideration,’ because last year, a friend of mine — Kim Estes — won in the same category,” he explains in an interview with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video above).

“She’s so much fun but rude and nasty,” declares Christina Pickles about her Emmy-nominated role as Biz Brantly on the web series “Break a Hip.” In our recent interview, she adds, “She’s getting a little softened up by her relationship with Wincy, her assistant. The thing I love about this show is that it’s not just about Biz and old people. It is absolutely old and young and is actually about growing up and growing old.”
The program stars Pickles as a cranky veteran actress who doesn’t work all that much any more. She hires a young man (Britt Hennemuth) to run errands for her. The role now has Pickles nominated at the Emmy Awards for Best Short-Form Actress. In our chat, she says the character is partially based on her own mother but that her daughter jokingly feels like Pickles doesn’t have to “stretch too much” away from herself.

It took a decade for Broadway royalty Kelli O’Hara to snag her first Tony Award win. But shortly after that success on her home turf, O’Hara may be on the way to her first Emmy Award thanks to the web series “The Accidental Wolf.”
O’Hara landed her first Tony nomination in the Musical Featured Actress category for “The Light in the Piazza” in 2005. While her co-star Victoria Clark was victorious in the lead category, O’Hara lost to Sara Ramirez from “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” O’Hara would go on to have an illustrious career on the rialto and would be recognized repeatedly in the lead category. She was nominated for her work in “The Pajama Game,” “South Pacific,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” and “The Bridges of Madison County.” Though she was competitive every year, she always wound up a Tony bridesmaid.
