Twenty years ago, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) got off the plane. “Friends” concluded its 10-season run on Thursday, May 6, 2004, with “The Last One,” its two-part series finale that drew 52.5 million viewers and remains the fifth most-watched series finale in U.S. history.
A lot has happened in the 20 years since the Emmy-winning sitcom went off the air. “Joey” came and went. “Friends” remains in syndication — and its enduring popularity means it’ll outlive all of us — but it has found a new generation of fans on streaming, first on Netflix and now on Max, to where the series moved when the streamer launched in 2020.
In 2021, the six stars — Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer — reunited for the Emmy-nominated Max special “Friends: The Reunion.” Five months after the special aired, James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther, died at 59 from prostate cancer. The character of Emily was a major hurdle for Ross and Rachel’s relationship on Friends, but she was also apparently a challenge for the producers. James Burrows, who directed numerous episodes of the hit series, wrote in his new memoir that actress Helen Baxendale and cast member David Schwimmer struggled with chemistry.
“She was nice, but not particularly funny,” Burrows wrote in Directed by James Burrows, out now. “Schwimmer had no one to bounce off. It was like clapping with one hand.”
He continued, “In sitcoms and any type of romantic comedy,...

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will return to its normal two-hour live format on TNT and TBS. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.
Among that group will certainly be previous SAG president Ed Asner, who was also a life achievement award recipient. That honorary award was also presented to Sidney Poitier and Betty White, who both died this past year.

Through Friends majorly focused on the lives of the six main characters, there were a couple of people who stole the show. One of them was Gunther (James Michael Tyler), who was in many ways the seventh friend. The other was Mr. Heckles (Larry Hankin), Monica’s neighbor from the floor below who lived a lonely life. He was a man without friends in a show about friends, and in many ways represented what it was like to be on the other side. Mr. Heckles could as well have been the eighth friend, but he was on the show for a

After 17 years off the air, the cast of Friends assembled for Friends: The Reunion, which launched on Thursday.
The special is now streaming on HBO Max, and there were many big reveals about the beloved comedy series.
In this reboot-heavy world, many have pondered whether a scripted update of the series could come to pass, but it sounds like it will never happen.
Lisa Kudrow spoke for her castmates by explaining a potential reboot:
It’s all up to Marta and David, and I once heard them say, and I completely agree, that they ended the show very nicely.
They would have to unravel all of those good things in order for there to be stories.
Come again, Lisa?
That's not a very definite answer, but it doesn't rule one out, meaning that the fans who want more from Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer...

Back in the day, this would have been a nice touch as Bonus Feature on a Collector's Edition DVD set. In the streaming era, when right marketing can trend just about anything that can be dropped on Ott, the pop hysteria about "Friends" renders reason enough for an event release. The hype about the special seemed obvious pre-release.
"Friends: The Reunion" was never really meant to reload the hysteria. The purpose was always to remind the world that the hysteria still exists. Seventeen years after the original series ended its decade's run, the reunion special was essentially aimed at reiterating the fact that nostalgia around the series is still intact.
Creators Kevin S. Bright, David Crane and Marta Kauffman have wisely gone for an unscripted format, aware perhaps that no amount of smart storywriting could create an episode that would let them avoid comparisons with an original series that continues to draw overwhelming sentimental appeal.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for “Friends: The Reunion”
For a special that was filmed and edited much faster than most are, “Friends: The Reunion” managed to bring in a lot of fan-favorites, either in person or via Zoom. That said, there were still some notable absences, like Phoebe’s husband Mike, played by Paul Rudd, and Ross’ son Ben, played by Cole Sprouse. So why weren’t those two involved?
“Well, we couldn’t have everybody on, because it’s only an hour and 45 minutes. And you’ve got to pay attention — the main nub of the show has got to be about the six cast members,” Ben Winston, director of the HBO Max reunion special, told TheWrap. “So you can’t have too many cameos because of course, there were hundreds of amazing people who were in ‘Friends’ over the years. Sadly, we couldn’t get everybody in.

For those for whom it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, there’s good news! The long-awaited and highly-anticipated Friends reunion special is hitting HBO Max (where all 236 episodes of the hit series are currently available for streaming) on Thursday, May 27! (Barcalounger chairs to enhance viewing pleasure are purely optional.) Hosted by James Corden, the episode marks the first time all six cast members will be sharing a screen in the 17 years since the show wrapped! As People magazine states in its recent cover story detailing the production, “Could we be any more excited?!”
A slew of the sitcom’s best-loved guest stars will be popping by to join in the fun, as well, including Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck and Maggie Wheeler (cue the “Oh my Gods!”). Justin Bieber, who was a wee six months old when the pilot aired, is also (inexplicably) making an appearance.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.” It’s a bit longer column this week because of the “Friends” reunion. I caught up with Ben Winston, the director and producer of the HBO Max special, on Monday to chat about getting the cast back together, and we had much to talk about.
That said, stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happens on “Friends: The Reunion.” Make sure to come back after you watch the special.
Winston was just 10 days away from directing the “Friends” reunion special for HBO Max in 2020 when he turned to his wife before bed and said, “Don’t you sometimes just wish that you could press pause and just get a bit more time?” Days later, Hollywood production — and the world, for that matter — came to a screeching halt due to Covid-19. He turned the postponement into a yearlong course in all things “Friends.

May 27 will be a throwback Thursday to Must-See TV. The long-awaited “Friends” reunion special will premiere on HBO Max, which also just so happened to have launched on that date one year ago. The special is not a new episode, so do not expect to see where Ross and Rachel are 17 years later or what happened to Joey after “Joey” was canceled (remember “Joey”?).
The reunion is just that: a reunion between the six stars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer — at their home for 10 years, the original Stage 24 soundstage (renamed the “The Friends Stage” in 2004 when the series ended), on the Warner Bros. lot, reminiscing about their iconic series with appearances from those who were part of it and some who were not but are presumably fans. After seemingly endless delays, the Friends reunion is finally here! Debuting this month on HBO Max, the special will reunite the original cast of the iconic sitcom, finally together after several delays in filming. The main cause of the delay is pretty simple: the Covid-19 pandemic kicked in last year just before the originally planned filming dates. So when did they end up filming after all?
According to TMZ, the reunion was shot in early April, spanning about three days of filming on the Warner Bros. studio lot. The filming apparently took place across indoor and outdoor sets, including some of the iconic sets from the original show. TMZ also reported that a live audience participated in some of the filming, but instead of allowing the general public on set, the audience consisted of pre-screened, Covid-tested union actors who were hired as extras for the shoot.
