The horror video game John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is headed our way in 2024, and Bloody Disgusting has learned this week that a prequel comic is also on the way.
Dark Horse Comics partners with Saber Interactive to present John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando: Rise of the Sludge God, a comic prequel to the upcoming game developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando.
Written by Michael Moreci and featuring artwork by Alberto J. Albuquerque with letterer Nate Piekos, Rise of the Sludge God is set to begin in March 2024.
The comic miniseries presents the terror of a professional crew up against an unstoppable force in Alien combined with a healthy dose of the suspense-filled action of The Thing, peppered with zombified monsters and one gruesome god. Interior artist Albuquerque also creates the wild cover art.

From Michael Moreci, Nathan Gooden, Addison Duke, and Jim Campbell, Barbaric is easily one of my favorite recent comic book releases. Giving readers an action-packed and blood-filled yet humorous story that will please any fantasy fan, I'm always suggesting it to new and lifelong comic book readers alike. I'm thrilled that Vault Comics has provided us with the entire first issue of Barbaric #1 exclusively for Daily Dead readers, along with an extended preview of the first issue in the upcoming standalone spinoff series Queen of Swords!
Barbaric #1: Barbaric #1 is collected with the other two issues as part of Barbaric Vol. 1: Murderable Offenses:
"Owen The Barbarian has an axe. And he's gonna do good with it if he has to kill someone.
Owen the Barbarian has been cursed to do good with what remains of his life. His bloodthirsty weapon, Axe, has become his moral compass with a drinking problem.

It was a swing that paid off.
In 2021, Vault Comics put out Barbaric, a comic book featuring a talking demonic ax and Owen, a barbarian looking for redemption. It proved to be a surprise, massive hit for the indie publisher, selling over 250,000 copies to date.
Barbaric has now set the company on a path of expanding the title into franchise territory. It is not only planning new and multiple arcs for the main Barbaric book but also launching a special and a novelization.
And this spring, it will also debut its first Barbaric spinoff, Queen of Swords. The story centers on a barbarian, an assassin, and a witch who form an uneasy alliance in order to obtain a magical relic. And yes, there is another demonically possessed weapon, in this case, a sassy talking sword. Vault is describing the book as Red Sonja meets Dungeons & Dragons.

Written by Tim Seeley and Michael Moreci, Revealer will be available exclusively on Shudder on Thursday, June 23rd. We caught up with director Luke Boyce for our latest Q&a, who talked about his work with Tim Seeley and Michael Moreci to develop this project, filming the movie during the pandemic, working with an incredible cast, and he gives an update on the Revival movie:
How did this project come about, and can you talk about working with Tim Seeley and Michael Moreci to tell this story?
Tim Seeley and I have been working together for some time and wanted to do something original and smaller, and we had developed a couple of projects with Michael Moreci. So when Covid happened, and we went into quarantine, we all started discussing the possibilities of developing a story that we could make within Covid restrictions. We started talking to our producers, Sarah Sharp and Brett Hays,...

What better setting for a Biblical apocalypse than an XXX novelty shop with peep show booths picketed by religious zealots who, more often than not, protest as a means of projecting their own internalized “sins”? That’s where we meet Angie Pitarelli (Caito Aase) and Sally Mewbourne (Shaina Schrooten) at the start of director Luke Boyce and screenwriters Michael Moreci and Tim Seeley’s Revealer. The former is heading inside to take an extra shift. The latter is screaming at her to repent. These women have a fun (if acrimonious) rapport considering they’ve been at this dance for what we can assume is years as neither gains any ground. Angie isn’t going to quit her job and Sally isn’t going to quit God. Sadly, neither will save them from judgment.
Isn’t that the rub? Whether you lead a carefree lifestyle refusing to kowtow to those who...

Angie Pitarelli and Sally Mewbourne (Shaina Schrooten; Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge) know each other, but they aren’t exactly friends. Angie works a peep booth at The Revealers Bookstore. Sally spends a lot of time there too, only she’s protesting against this den of inequity.
It’s summer 1987 and Angie has picked up an extra shift to help with the bills. This means an extra day of dealing with not just Sally but her boss Ray and a parade of obnoxious patrons. But she’ll soon be wishing that was all she had to deal with as she and Sally are trapped in the store as what seems to be Armageddon unfolds outside.

You know the score by now with these 100 page anniversary specials. They are a celebration of some of the most iconic characters DC has on their roster, with a nice blend of multiple covers by great artists, around a dozen stories by different writers and artists and some bonus pin-ups. Pricey, but usually worth the money. Aquaman is certainly worthy of celebration, reaching 80 years in print is no mean feat after all, though he’s not always been such a celebrated character. Often the focus of ridicule in fact, despite being one of the longest serving members of the Justice League. I always liked the classic Aquaman personally, not so much the post-Peter David version, hook for hand and all. To each their own though. Which is lucky, as you can choose from the following 11 stories and eras. Let’s take a look.

When it comes to comic books, the natural thought most of us have is that of costumed heroes and villains with otherworldly superpowers. No matter where you go for your entertainment—be it movies, television, or video games—it won't take long to come across any of the characters we've all come to know from the "Big 2" Publishers.
While superheroes may be the bread and butter of the industry, what about the other stories of comics? Ones that are on the darker, spookier side of lore?
Horror in comics is hardly a new concept, dating back as far as the beginning of the Golden Age of the 1940s and ’50s. At that time, most were adaptations of popular fiction works such as Eerie Comics' New Adventures of Frankenstein and Classic Comics' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The genre really found its footing when EC Comics introduced the world to what...

Throughout the entire Disney era of Star Wars, the studio have come under criticism for failing to take risks with the franchise, with each new story being told seemingly obligated to tie back to the Original Trilogy in some way despite there literally being an infinite number of possibilities to take the beloved sci-fi saga in an entirely new direction using characters, planets and galaxies that we’ve never seen before.
Both The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker found themselves under fire for relying too heavily on nostalgia and established iconography at the expense of originality, while The Last Jedi was initially savaged by fans for doing the exact opposite. The Mandalorian managed to hit that narrative sweet spot between the old and new, but the general feeling is that Star Wars has been returning to the well far too often.

Below, Deadline has an exclusive first look at the three variant covers for the new project’s debut issue.

An evil doll. A demonic nun. A killer clown. While such creatures are nightmare fuel for some, screenwriter Gary Dauberman embraces them. “These characters have been very good to me,” the filmmaker says with a laugh. “So I’m not scared of them. They don’t show up in my nightmares.”
Dauberman has made an art of out finding new and creative ways to scare audiences, having written all three installments of the “Annabelle” series, focusing on the porcelain doll that serves as a conduit for evil that was first featured in 2013’s “The Conjuring.” When 2016’s “The Conjuring 2” introduced a new breakout villain in the form of the demon nun Valak, Dauberman was tasked with creating the mythos for 2018’s “The Nun.”
Then Dauberman took on one of the most enviable but also intimidating tasks for any fan of horror: adapting Stephen King’s massive novel “It” for the big screen.

Holy crossover! We've got an extended look at the crazy comic crossover in which Gotham City and Riverdale collide!
Bif! Bang! Zonk!
The past couple of years have seen Archie characters interacting with retro icons like The Monkees and The Ramones, but despite how fantastic these crossovers were, they were just warm-ups for the majesty that is Archie Meets Batman '66. The recent five-issue mini-series -- written by DC stalwart Jeff Parker with Michael Moreci and illustrated by Archie legend Dan Parent (the creator of Kevin Keller), this event was a joyous celebration of both franchises.
Context, as always, is important here. In the late 1960s, both Batman and Archie were experiencing then unparalleled levels of success. The former was the star of his own ABC television series, while Archie and his pals and gals were igniting Saturday mornings with their massively successful The Archie Show cartoon...

Presenting two real-life stories from my days of yore, although names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.
Story The First:
I knew a girl in high school – I wouldn’t say we were friends, but she was someone who had never participated in the Piggy horrors. Sally was an A+ student, on the track to an Ivy League school. Pretty (but not gorgeous) and popular (but quiet about it), she came to me one day and said that she needed to talk to me privately. I was surprised… and a bit suspicious. What did she want? But because Sally had never been overtly mean to me, even though she was part of the clique that instigated most of the callous cruelties upon me, and because I still hoped to be “accepted,” and I wanted to believe for some reason she was about to warn me...

Reilly) brings on new hired hand Massetto (Dave Franco), a virile young servant forced into hiding by his angry lord. Inconceivable Release Details: Press Release: "Los Angeles, June 22, 2017 -- As its June 30 theatrical and digital release approaches, actor/director/producer Jonathan Baker reflects on the theme of his film, which, safe to say, is an entertaining thriller with a cautionary message: if you’re thinking about IVF, surrogate motherhood or even just hiring a child minder, be careful. Rather like Jaws’ tagline, “You’ll never go in the water again,” after seeing Inconceivable, you just might want to think twice before leaving your child alone with a stranger, even as attractive and seductive one as Inconceivable star Nicky Whelan.
Baker cites nanny, surrogacy and IVF programs gone wrong when he talks about why he chose to do the film. “The movie is about a couple and their journey though In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), surrogate motherhood and a vindictive nanny. IVF is a topic that can be taboo, even in the USA. In addition to entertaining the audience, I wanted to shed light on this subject—which affects so many couples—in an open forum to help dispel the secrecy and even shame surrounding this topic. The film provides the space for a real problem to play out (in an admittedly extreme way) in a fictional world. There are many people who want children that need the help, and this film strings viewers along for their struggle, but in a very different, arguably darker, way.”
“While the film at first focuses on IVF, the focus naturally dips into surrogate motherhood as it becomes the route used to solve the couple [played by Nicolas Cage and Gina Gershon]’s infertility,” Baker continues. “But is the surrogate mother potentially signing her unborn child’s life away? For the average couple, surrogacy does not connect with losing a child; however this thriller is all about exploring that fear. Allowing a stranger into your world can be frightening in itself, but such vulnerability is amplified with surrogacy. The film proves that IVF and surrogacy can create a dangerous cocktail of tension, paranoia, and fear that can destroy a family.”
Deception doesn’t always come from where you expect it to; sometimes it comes from your most trusted nanny as seen with Inconceivable. When a stranger is in the home, it is natural to fear something might go wrong. Such incidents have been widely broadcast in cases such as with Gwen Stefani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Balthazar Getty, among others. Isn’t it weird that we trust strangers with our most prized possessions: children? I wanted to combine these topics to bring these fears to the screen, because fear is what gets people talking. Through discussion, society can better address such topics.
Overall, my goal for this film was to make something that matters and really hits home with people. Infertility is a harsh reality for many prospective parents, and I wanted to help contribute to such an important dialogue as this. I want my movie to bring the topics out of hiding and into open discussion. That’s why ‘deception hits home’ is such a fraught tag line for the movie.”
Starring Nic Cage, Gina Gershon, Faye Dunaway and Nicky Whelan and co-starring Eva Marie and Jonathan Baker, Lionsgate Premiere is releasing Inconceivable June 30."

Although we still have much of June ahead of us and all the awesome comic books that it’ll no doubt bring, it doesn’t hurt to look ahead at what next month will offer. In fact, those of you who love scooping up variant covers will want to pay attention because DC is set to serve up some real eye-catchers with Harley Quinn, Superman, Batman and several others.
First let’s talk about Harley Quinn #23, which features yet another solid effort from Frank Cho. Knowing that Amanda Conner continually brings her A-game each month with her standard covers, it takes a special kind of artist to have a friendly competition with her – and Cho’s recent works have been that damn good. This encapsulation of Harley and Ivy’s friendship just proves that.

This week is one monumental week for Wonder Woman. After 75 years, the Amazonian princess is finally about to star in her own movie – which it turns out is critically acclaimed. To mark the occasion, DC has given us Wonder Woman Annual #1, the first annual to star the character in the Rebirth era. It’s an anthology collection containing several short stories which each demonstrate just how amazing Diana is.
The highlight for many fans will be the annual’s opening tale, ‘And Then There Were Three,’ courtesy of current Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka. It’s a retelling of the first meeting between the Trinity – Superman, Batman and Diana. It’s a great little piece, with Rucka nailing in broad strokes the differences between these three heroes. Superman is sunny and hopeful, Batman is reticent and slow to trust while Diana is noble and pure of spirit. Rucka’s work...

Strapped for cash and striving to sustain his son’s medical treatments, a father captures a killer who is actually a werewolf in Curse. The four-issue comic book mini-series was released by Boom! Studios in 2014, and now they are collaborating with Blumhouse to bring it back into the moonlight with a feature film adaptation.
THR reveals that Blumhouse has optioned the rights to Boom! Studios’ werewolf comic, which was created by Michael Moreci (Hoax Hunters), Tim Daniel (Enormous), Riley Rossmo (Rebel Blood) and Colin Lorimer (Uxb).
Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Boom! Studios’ Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will produce the project, with Adam Yoelin from Boom! also on hand as an executive producer.
It’s not yet known who will adapt the story for the big screen or who will step behind the camera for the Curse adaptation, but stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates. For those...

Transference #1
Written by Michael Moreci

Published by Black Mask Studios
There is a very special sort of vibe to Transference very early on. You know that feeling you get when you are in the midst of a really good film or drawn deeper into the pages of a book that causes you to readjust your seat? That’s the kind of feeling that Transference gives off from its earliest pages.
After a quick introduction of the three main secret agent characters, Colton, Sommes and Jordan, through a peek into a Paris operation eight months ago, the concept of the book is revealed. The three agents work for an organization that time travel to carry out various jobs, ensuring at the same time that their actions have no ramifications on the time line of their own present reality. Heavy Metal - yep, as in the legendary fantasy magazine - just optioned movie rights to the Image Comic Roche Limit created by Michael Moreci.
About the comic:
“Roche Limit’ is set in a space colony that has devolved into a melting pot of criminal factions. The plot follows a mystery centered on a missing girl while mixing in shades of horror.”
In sciency terms, a Roche limit is the minimum distance to which a large satellite can approach its primary body without being torn apart by tidal forces.
Seth Sherwood, the screenwriter behind the upcoming Leatherface movie has been hired to pen the script while Heavy Metal’s Jeff Krelitz, David Boxenbaum and newly installed president Brian Witten, are developing and producing the feature.

Though they have certainly taken over the convention in recent years, big budget superhero tentpoles aren’t the only movies to get announced at San Diego Comic-Con. Case in point, Image Comics’ science fiction/horror piece Roche Limit has just been given a one-way ticket to the big screen.
The news comes from THR, who report that Leatherface scribe Seth Sherwood will pen the film adaptation for Heavy Metal’s Jeff Krelitz, David Boxenbaum and Brian Witten. Created by Michael Moreci in 2014, Roche Limit tells the story of a space colony that has devolved into “a melting pot of crime and terrible secrets,” and a mystery surrounding a missing girl.
A science fiction tale with elements of horror, Roche Limit initially ran for five issues and is now in the middle of its second five-story arc, Roche Limit: Clandestiny. Though Sherwood’s adaptation is said to only include the first story,...

Description: When one man’s writer’s block gets in the way of his suicide note, he goes for a walk to clear his head and soon uncovers a century-old conspiracy dedicated to creating and mining the worst lows of human desperation.
Our Take: Despite being fairly prolific and has worked on books that would fit in here at Destroy The Brain, writer Ryan K Lindsay premieres on this site with Negative Space, alongside a remarkably skilled and talented artist whose coloring work graced high profile titles like Shutter and Manifest Destiny. But clear away your preconceptions about what Negative Space is going to be; it’s not quite horror but it’s certainly horrifying at times, despite also having a darkly comedic mood. Comparable to The Life After but more grounded,...

They were startled to receive a distress signal from a supposedly decimated planet, but it was getting shot down by something on the surface of Dispater that really rattled the eclectic crew in the first issue of Roche Limit: Clandestiny. Taking place 75 years after the events of the five-issue Roche Limit series, this sequel storyline features new characters and fresh situations, but still retains the fantastic storytelling and gorgeous artwork of its predecessor. With Roche Limit: Clandestiny hitting comic shop shelves early next month, we caught up with writer Michael Moreci and artist Kyle Charles to discuss creating scares in space, returning to Dispater, the presence of androids, the possibility of a sixth issue in the Clandestiny story arc, and much more.
Your new comic book series, Roche Limit: Clandestiny, features a mind-bending mystery taking place 75 years after the events of the first Roche Limit story arc that wrapped up in February.

Where there is belief in the supernatural, they set out to debunk. But that doesn’t mean they don’t believe. The investigators of all things unusual in Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley’s Hoax Hunters comic book series secretly take on and conceal otherworldly threats, and fans can see it return this March as Heavy Metal magazine’s first comic book release.
With Hoax Hunters returning next month, we caught up with writer Michael Moreci to talk about what it’s like working with Heavy Metal, what’s next for the beloved characters of his series, the in-the-works Hoax Hunters movie, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us about the new season of Hoax Hunters. How did the new partnership with Heavy Metal come about?
