CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).
"Family Affair" ran for five seasons on CBS beginning in 1966, and though it doesn't appear in syndication as often as other shows from its era, the series is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. Unfortunately, the show is also remembered for the unusual amount of tragedy that befell its stars. Child star Anissa Jones died of an overdose just five years after the show ended,...

"Petticoat Junction" was the unofficial second part of the Paul Henning Hooterville trilogy, a trio of 1960s sitcoms about the clash between city slickers and country bumpkins. In 1962, Henning created "The Beverly Hillbillies," a series about hillbillies who, when they strike oil, move to Beverly Hills. In 1965, he inverted the formula with "Green Acres," a show about millionaires who move to a farm to learn about country living. Sandwiched in between the two was "Petticoat Junction," which debuted on September 24, 1963. "Junction" took place at the Shady Rest Hotel, overseen by the lovable widowed hayseed Kate Bradley (Bea Benederet). She and her uncle Joe (Edgar Buchanan) would run the hotel and oversee the shenanigans of her three daughters Betty Jo, Billie Jo, and Bobbie Jo.
"Petticoat Junction" takes place in the same universe as "Green Acres," as both shows make constant references to common fictional cities that the characters visit. There were a few supporting crossovers,...

In the studio-wide franchise business, episodic live-action TV series have taken center stage, replacing movies, and reasonably so, as not only does it provide the makers with more area to explore in the narrative and greater scope for characterization through a longer runtime, but it has also become a fan favorite medium in no time. Taking a cue from that, Legendary’s Monsterverse is the latest franchise to expand their arena through series, and the first step in that direction is Apple TV+’s latest release Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Revolving around Godzilla and other primordial behemoths known as Titans, their impact on the world populated by humans, and the role of secretive Titans tracking titular organizations in all this, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters spans generations worth of storytelling to uncover secrets about the world unknown. Along with rival NBC, CBS found success in radio before adding on the new medium of television in the 1940s. With the creation of ABC a few years later, the “Big Three” networks dominated the small screen for half a century before receiving competition from Fox network, cable stations and, later, streaming services. In the earliest days of TV, CBS and NBC vied for top spots in the ratings; by the mid-1950s, CBS commanded the lead with pioneering and groundbreaking programs across multiple genres — a trend that would continue for decades.
Like NBC, CBS transitioned radio programs over to television. One successful radio series they wanted to convert was “My Favorite Husband,” but the star refused to commit unless her real-life husband was allowed to be her lead. However, her husband was from Cuba, and CBS executives didn’t think Americans would believe an American woman would marry a hispanic.

The very first episode of The Monkees, “Royal Flush,” won the series‘ director an Emmy Award in 1967. The Monkees‘ creators, Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider won their own golden statuettes in the Best Comedy Series category that same legendary evening.

As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

Weigel Broadcasting Co. is flipping its digital broadcast network Decades into the sitcom-centric Catchy Comedy on March 27, Variety has learned exclusively. The over-the-air network will focus on a library of classic comedies, with an emphasis on key female stars including the signature shows from Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett.
But also central to the Catchy Comedy lineup are key series from Norman Lear, as well as some of the most lauded sitcoms of all time – including the original “Night Court,” which is back in the spotlight thanks to the success of the revival series on NBC.
Unlike Decades, which wasn’t measured by ratings, Catchy Comedy will be Nielsen-rated. “That takes it into a different sphere, in terms of advertiser availability and access,” said Neal Sabin, vice chairman of Weigel Broadcasting Co. “There are many advertisers that won’t look at these networks unless they’re rated,...

Grammy-winning rapper and producer Dr. Dre has been in the music game for over three decades. Throughout that time, he’s solidified his spot in hip-hop history as a rapper, producer, and record executive, working with artists from Eminem and 50 Cent to Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys. But before the global fame, he was a young person with big dreams growing up in southern California.

Dr. Dre grew up in Compton, California at a time when more and more hip-hop artists began emerging on the scene and exploring the fledgling music genre.
Dre first started performing with a group called the World Class Wreckin’ Cru in 1985. Among the group’s members were DJ Yella, whom Dre would later recruit for a new group called N.W.

When the 74th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced back in July, legendary comedy duo Steve Martin and Martin Short joined an incredibly short list of costars nominated in the Comedy Actor category for their performances on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Throughout all Emmy history, only four other sets of comedy acting pairs have landed nominations in this category in the same year. But now that they have accomplished this feat, could the internal competition keep either of them from netting the trophy?
The first duo of comedy actors to earn nominations in this category dates back to 1968, when Sebastian Cabot and Brian Keith were recognized for “Family Affair” but lost to Don Adams (“Get Smart”). Tony Randall and Jack Klugman had the longest streak of costar nominations in this category from 1971 to 1975: Klugman bested Randall in ’71 and ’73, but Randall had the last laugh by finally...

Can that nostalgic feeling be enough to garner an Emmy nomination? If the 2022 list of nominees is any guide, the answer is yes.
In the live variety special category, the proof is in the pudding. Per usual, the Grammys, the Tonys and the Oscars — slap and all — are nominated. However, the final two slots are filled by ABC’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff ’rent Strokes” and NBC’s “Pepsi Super Bowl Lvi Halftime Show.”
The Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel live special has been nominated each time it has aired previously — first for the recreation of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” in 2019 and in 2020, with “Good Times” in the mix. With “The Facts of Life” and “Diff ’rent Strokes” this year, not only were old stories retold, more A-list stars — and talent from the original shows— joined in.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses some plot developments in Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder,” currently playing in theaters.
“Thor: Love and Thunder” finds Chris Hemsworth returning as the title character, joined by Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who takes on his powers. The duo are tasked with taking on Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, who is wreaking havoc across the multiverses, killing every God he can.
To soundtrack the superhero tale, director Taika Waititi gravitated towards the songs of Guns N’ Roses.
In an interview with Loudersound, Waititi said, “You know, I still go home late at night and instead of going on, you know, Pornhub, I’ll go and watch old Gn’R music videos because I just loved the band. What does it mean to be a Time 100 honoree?
For Jon Batiste, who recently dominated the Grammy Awards with five wins and a colorful performance of “Freedom,” he emphasized the importance of leaning into one’s power.
“Lean into yourself because that’s your superpower,” Batiste told Variety on Wednesday night at the Time 100 Gala at Lincoln Center in New York City. “Genius is the one who is most like themselves. The leader is the one who is coming from a place of knowing in himself and can inspire other people.”
The ceremony, hosted by “Shang-Chi” superstar Simu Liu, marked Time’s first in-person event since 2019. The evening will also be broadcast in a primetime special on ABC on June 12.
One of the highlights of the night was Liu living up to his Twitter proposition to share a milk bubble tea with billionaire Bill Gates.

Few comedy duos have had the staying power of Steve Martin and Martin Short, two actors and entertainers who recently rejuvenated their decades-long partnership with the smash hit Hulu comedy series “Only Murders in the Building.” The hilarious spoof of true crime podcasts looks poised to perform extremely well at the upcoming Emmy Awards, and if Martin and Short both earn nominations in the Comedy Lead Actor category, they will become only the fourth comedy pair in the history of the awards to earn double bids in the category.
The last time two costars competed in the comedy lead category was exactly 20 years ago, when in 2002 Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry both earned nominations for “Friends.” That year was one of the comedy’s best at the Emmys, as it earned 11 nominations and picked up prizes for Comedy Series and Jennifer Aniston, but LeBlanc and Perry ultimately lost to Ray Romano for “Everybody Loves Raymond.

Well, that was awesome. The Super Bowl halftime show finally opened up to hip-hop—this was the first time the rappers got to bumrush center stage, instead of serving as a sideshow. And it was a triumph. Dr. Dre presided over an all-time great Super Bowl blowout, rocking alongside Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson .Paak on drums. It was a celebration of West Coast rap history at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, in a battle between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Updated: The halftime show of Super Bowl Lvi might have technically featured five announced headliners — Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige, with a surprise sixth in 50 Cent — but there’s no question that the hit-filled set revolved around two stars: Dr. Dre and the city of L.A.
And while the lyrics to the songs featured in the long medley of the performers’ hits — some of the biggest hip-hop songs of the past 30 years — were largely sanitized from references to racial strife or parts of the human anatomy, the sole white headliner, Eminem, managed to make a statement that pre-show reports said he’d been expressly asked not to make: Taking a knee, Colin Kaepernick style, to protest police violence against the Black community.
However, an N.F.L. rep told Variety shortly after the show that it was fully aware of Eminem’s plans.

Never did we think five artists would grace the Super Bowl halftime stage together. But this year's grand performance from Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, and Dr. Dre, plus a surprise appearance from 50 Cent, blew our minds and made history all at once. The six music icons took over the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA, on Sunday for a celebration of West Coast hip-hop all orchestrated by Dr. Dre.
The epic performance took us through a medley of coastal hits, from Snoop and Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode" and "California Love" to Lamar's "m.A.A.d City" and "Alright." 50 Cent popped up to perform "In Da Club," while Blige took us way back with her songs "Family Affair" and "No More Drama." Director Lee Jae-kyoo looked mostly for unknowns when casting the students in All of Us Are Dead, hoping that a lack of familiarity would make the zombie drama feel more real for audiences watching at home. That being said, he grounded the expansive ensemble with some established K-drama actors viewers may recognize from other projects. Here’s where you may have seen some of the All of Us Are Dead‘s young cast members before…
Yoon Chan-young as Lee Cheong-san
One of the many scene-stealers in the All of Us Are Dead cast is Yoon Chan-young, who plays the extremely nimble Lee Cheong-san.
