If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.
Series-wise, a highlight of 1999 goes beyond the well-established canon with films like Trick and Bye Bye Africa, while of course including Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Scorsese, and Claire Denis. Films starring Shirley Maclaine, a study of 1960s paranoia, and Columbia’s “golden era” (read: 1950-1961) are curated; meanwhile, The Breaking Ice,...

One of 2024’s obsessions is “Feud: “Capote vs. the Swans.” The FX on Hulu limited series revolves around the best-selling novelist Truman Capote‘s friendship with several of the highest of New York’s society women include Babe Paley, Slim Keith and Lee Radziwill, the sister of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The women treat him as a sort of father confessor, but when he publishes an excerpt from what he considers his will be his masterwork “Answered Prayers” in Esquire — a thinly veiled account of their lives and secrets –they feel betrayed and turn their back on their once trusted friend. He spends the rest of his life trying to get back into their good graces.
Everyone knows Capote wrote “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and his superb “In Cold Blood” and was a witty albeit inebriated guest on countless talk shows, but how much do you really know about him?

“Do I look like a monk?” Chloë Sevigny asks the room.
We’re in the Lower East Side apartment of Chris Peters, the head designer of the fashion label Puppets and Puppets, and Sevigny is trying on the sequined gown she plans to wear at a fundraiser for Tibet House that night. But she worries the outfit’s long sleeve, which begins at the hem, drapes around Sevigny’s neck like a scarf, and extends to her left wrist, evokes the robes favored by the Buddhist figures whose traditions the organization highlights. As the sun beats through Peters’ window, cascading along the dress’s spangles and filling the room with reflected light, Sevigny is more reminiscent of a disco ball than the Dalai Lama.
Peters quickly reassures her. “I wouldn’t say it feels monastic. It’s an odd kind of ’30s glam. You look incredible.”

“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” pits the incendiary author Truman Capote against a “gaggle” of New York socialites, but there is one “swan” that is truly at the heart of the roost, namely, Babe Paley, played by Naomi Watts. Since Babe is the closest of all the women to the writer, his betrayal of the group in 1975 in his scathing “Esquire” excerpt from his unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” hits her the hardest, and the other swans rally to her defense to ice the “In Cold Blood” scribe out of the upper echelons of society.
What makes the relationship between Babe and Truman so compelling—in addition to the performances of Watts and Tom Hollander—is how much we see of their friendship blossoming. The entire opening sequence of the season shows Capote comforting and strategizing with Babe over how to handle the latest and most disgraceful of her husband Bill’s (Treat Williams) infidelities.

[This story contains spoilers from episode five of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, “The Secret Inner Lives of Swans.”]
In a move that likely would’ve been met with disapproval by Truman Capote’s once-beloved “swans,” the wealthy socialite foes of the In Cold Blood author are decentralized in episode five of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans in favor of opening up dialogue about the position gay men were allowed to occupy in 1970s New York high society.
The writers and executive producers of the second season in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology use a fictionalized meeting between Capote (Tom Hollander) and writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin (Chris Chalk) as a vehicle to unearth the truth that, beyond feeling a sense of embarrassment from Capote exposing their deepest darkest secrets in a four-part essay series in Esquire magazine, the swans were also taken aback by Capote’s audacity to be anything more than their immortally loyal gay sidekick.

In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.
One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.

Once the hottest writer in town, Truman Capote also was a master at self destruction.
Cut to The Bistro, Beverly Hills circa 1973. Cradling his cocktail, Capote was at once amiable and petulant. I was sitting across from him at the elegant café to discuss his new screenplay, but the discussion soon became an argument.
Capote, always theatrical, finally turned to strangers at the next table. “I wrote a brilliant screenplay and this man from Paramount is telling me that I didn’t write it, I simply typed it,” Capote complained, an edge to his high-pitched voice. “What should I do to him?”
The strangers smiled. “Order another martini,” said one. “Better make it a double.”
A superstar writer and raconteur, the late Capote needed more than a drink at this point in his life, and our meeting was not helping him. I thought of him this week as his “character...

Based on Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women, the third episode of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, titled Masquerade 1966, is all about friendship. A friendship that is broken and betrayed, but where there remains a desire to mend it even though you know it is doomed already. In the previous two episodes, we have already seen how Truman Capote completely threw his best friendship with Babe Paley under the bus by writing an article on her scandalous marriage, but in this episode, we went back to 1966, when everything was fine between these two. At that time, they were the closest friends who seemed to be very genuine on camera, but no one knew at that point that their union would take a drastic turn.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happened In Masquerade 1966?
Episode 3 is all about a documentary shot by the Maysles brothers, Albert and David, who wanted to make a film on Truman’s life.

[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, “Masquerade 1966.”]
The catalyst for Feud: Capote vs. the Swans‘ third episode is absolutely true.
On Nov. 28, 1966, Truman Capote held the Black and White Ball at New York City’s Plaza Hotel — an event so lavish, boasting a guest list so carefully edited, that The New York Times dubbed it “the best party ever” on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. As for the rest of what was seen during Wednesday night’s “Masquerade 1966,” well… liberties were taken.
A stylistic departure from the rest of the series, the Gus Van Sant-helmed hour is largely presented as a black-and-white documentary of the party and Capote’s (Tom Hollander) weeks of preparations for his big night. At its heart, it’s a flashback episode, with the Swans seen in various states of anxious planning — most of them under the impression that they would be the event’s “guest of honor.

To “The Swans,” a coterie of New York high society women, Truman Capote was an amusing circus act. Known for penning Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, these aristocratic ladies invited him to lavish dinner parties and fanciful getaways to indulge in his animated, gossip-filled stories. Author Laurence Leamer found himself captivated by Capote’s mélange of wit, joie de vivre, and callousness, and chronicled his falling-out with his one-percenter gal pals in the 2021 book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era,...

Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

Truman Capote is America’s Princess Diana. There, someone had to say it. In both instances, we remain obsessed not with the good work done but with the scandal-plagued, tragedy-tinted endings to two beloved figures. More than 40 years after Captote’s death by slow suicide (though officially it was liver failure), pop culture can’t get enough of his final years. Almost 20 years after the back-to-back film looks at his life, Jon Robin Baitz (“Brothers and Sisters”) brings Capote to TV with the second season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series “Feud,” “Capote vs. The Swans.”
While the two movies about Capote’s life focused on the research and writing of his masterpiece “In Cold Blood,” “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” zeroes in on the work he published in the aftermath of that global success. “Wise Blood” marked the beginning of Fitzgerald’s many literary adaptations, including 1993’s “Zelda” with Natasha Richardson and Timothy Hutton, and Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” (1993), starring John Malkovich. He wrote the miniseries adaptations of Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” (1996) and Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” (1998), starring Patrick Stewart as Captain Ahab. Both series were nominated for several Emmy Awards.

With Grant Singer’s Reptile, Netflix has a solid word of mouth hit on its hands. A crime thriller starring Benicio Del Toro, Alicia Silverstone, Justin Timberlake and Eric Bogosian, the film has sat at the top of Netflix’s top 10 for the last two weeks. Indeed, we caught it at TIFF (read our review) and really enjoyed the darkly humorous thriller, which eventually evolves into a tense action thriller boasting one of Del Toro’s most outstanding performances.
It marks the feature directorial debut of Singer, best known for his music videos. We were lucky enough to chat with Singer recently, who seems to have a bright future ahead of him as a director. While some have dubbed the film David Fincher-esque, if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll note that it likely owes more to the work of Sidney Lumet, which is by design.

Kenneth Branagh’s “Haunting in Venice” is a dark, moody ghost story that, no doubt, will draw comparisons to numerous haunted house movies, both classic and contemporary. The film, the third in Branagh’s series of Agatha Christie adaptations, tells the story of detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) as he investigates the death of a young girl and the belief by her mother (Kelly Reilly) that angry spirits were involved.
For the film’s cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos, there were several classic film inspirations he and Branagh discussed for the film’s look. “We looked at ‘The Innocents’,” Zambarloukos told TheWrap, citing the 1961 feature film starring Deborah Kerr. “We also looked at ‘Kwaidan’, which is a Japanese ghost story,” he said. “They all had a certain eloquence.”
Another major reference, especially considering the belief from those in the movie that a murder has happened, was the 1967 true crime film “In Cold Blood.

A sinister edge emerges from Justin Timberlake in the first official trailer for Reptile, the forthcoming Netflix film directed by Grant Singer. Out Oct. 6, the film follows Detective Tom Nichols (Benicio Del Toro) as he works to uncover the mystery behind a young real estate agent’s murder. Timberlake stars as the victim’s unassuming husband, Will Grady, who might not be as innocent as he seems — after all, any good detective knows better than to count anyone out too early.

When it comes to exploiting our deepest, darkest fears, nothing jangles the nerves more effectively than a well-made home invasion flick. We all want to believe we're safe once we lock the doors and windows, but unless you live in a fortress, you know that if someone really wanted to get in your house, they could do so with relative ease. Typically, we're worried about burglars, but we know vicious people exist. We've read Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and watched Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," and know, deep down in our hearts, once intruders cross the threshold, it's not going down like Kevin McCallister versus the Wet Bandits. Because anyone bold enough to break into a house is either desperate or disturbed, and this places us at a severe disadvantage.
No 21st-century film has exploited this to more terrifying effect than Bryan Bertino's "The Strangers." The premise...

Say what you want about celebrity worship, but actors loom large in the popular imagination. Millions of people around the world suspend their disbelief to follow a story and invest in its characters, and some of this investment may go toward the actors themselves. Many of us like, respect, or find some common ground with specific performers. Our connections with them vary — background, talent, personality — but a consistent one is generation. So it is lamentable when we hear of an actor aging or even dying. Why? Because it means another part of our culture and zeitgeist is fading away.
We're just over halfway through 2023, and while we haven't seen a repeat of 2016 with its flurry of celebrity deaths, numerous actors from the screen and stage are passing on. Here are the actors who have died in 2023, so far.

Unsurprisingly, Universal and Blumhouse’s “The Exorcist: Believer” — a brand new horror chapter in the beloved franchise that hits theaters on Oct. 13, 2023 (you can watch the first trailer above) — started with Max von Sydow.
Co-writer/director David Gordon Green had already started thinking about tackling a new take on “The Exorcist” but after von Sydow, who co-starred in both “The Exorcist” and its deeply insane sequel “The Exorcist II: The Heretic,” died, Green started a deep dive. It wasn’t just his Ingmar Bergman collaboration either but “his spectacular body of work.”
“I wasn’t really thinking about what I’m going to do with this film yet,” Green told TheWrap. “I was just thinking more about the intimidating landscape of being a part of that franchise. I wasn’t settled into a theme. But in watching some of those films, they tap, in a beautiful way, into the infinite spiritual realms,...

The initial reactions to “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” out of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival have made landfall, and critics are calling the movie a fitting end to the beloved franchise – or at least Harrison Ford’s part in it.
“Indy 5’s” official synopsis reads:
Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA.
On his fifth outing as “one of cinema’s greatest heroes” – and the first not directed by Steven Spielberg – Ford is joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Mads Mikkelsen (“Another Round”), Boyd Holbrook (“Narcos”), Shaunette Renée Wilson (“Billions”), Toby Jones (“In Cold Blood”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”) and newcomer Ethann Isidore. In the Emmy race for Best TV Movie, Hulu’s top contenders appear to be “Fire Island” and “Prey,” both of which are currently projected by Gold Derby to be top-five contenders, but “Crown Heights” director Matt Ruskin’s stirring journalism drama, “Boston Strangler,” is equally deserving of the streamer’s resources this season. Avoiding easy answers and boasting an Oscar- and Emmy-nominated cast, the film composites “She Said’s” female-empowerment angle, “Spotlight’s” reproof of corrupt city politics, and “Zodiac’s” emphasis on the personal toll exacted by obsession.

The Oscars recognized the actors and filmmakers we lost over the past year in the annual In Memoriam segment, which this year unfurled to the sound of Lenny Kravitz playing “Calling All Angels.” The emotional segment is a viewer favorite, but omissions of high-profile Hollywood figures spark annual debate.

Legally embattled actor Alec Baldwin has asked fans to focus on late Hollywood outcast Robert Blake’s contributions to film and TV rather than Blake’s “legal entanglements.”
“Robert Blake has died. I realize that many people have had harsh feelings toward him,” Baldwin wrote on Instagram. “His life seemed to involve many dramatic legal entanglements.”
