Exclusive: Roland Emmerich is heading to next month’s Mipcom Cannes to present first-look footage from upcoming Gladiator epic Those About to Die.
AGC Studios and High End Productions will host an invite-only presentation on the first afternoon of the mid-October market, showcasing the footage along with a Q&a with the Godzilla auteur.
The $150M Anthony Hopkins-starring series will launch on Peacock in the U.S. later next year but AGC boss Stuart Ford recently told Deadline the producers eschewed a “worldwide streamer type deal” when putting together the financial package. Prime Video has bought the show in a wealth of European nations and the free TV rights outside the exclusive distribution window are still being negotiated with various licensees across Europe, according to Constantin Film in August. Principal photography is nearly complete at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios and the show, which falls outside of SAG-AFTRA strike restrictions,...

This year’s documentary nominees explore diverse subject matter as saving birds (“All that Breathes”) and an exploration of the life and career of photographer and activist Nan Goldin (“All the Beauty and the Bloodshed”). But the documentary nominees, which took place at the 15th annual Oscars on March 4, 1943 at the Cocoanut Grove, primarly revolved around World War II.
There were 25 nominees — shorts and features competed against each other — and four winners. The US Navy was the producer of winner “The Battle of Midway,” directed by John Ford. Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.

Lionsgate said Wednesday that Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi pic Moonfall will be released on February 4. Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak and Donald Sutherland star in the big-canvas film, which at a reported budget of $140 million is the biggest-budget “independent” movie to shoot in years.
Lionsgate acquired North American rights in late 2019 after a high-profile sales launch at Cannes; Centropolis, AGC and CAA sold out on the project worldwide. Production was just getting underway in Canada when Covid hit, causing months of delays. The shoot eventually began in October in Montreal.
In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Berry) is...

The Nes wasn’t just the home of some of the best games ever made; it was an almost miraculous device that delivered some of the purest and most wholesome moments of many of our childhoods. Of course, part of the reason why Nes games were so wholesome compared to many modern titles is that Nintendo usually ensured they were heavily censored by the time many of us played them.
At a time before the Esrb and a global conversation about the impact of video game violence, Nintendo took it upon themselves to impose a strict series of content guidelines that almost all developers had to follow. Those guidelines (as well as regional content standards) resulted in some of the biggest Nes games ever made effectively being “censored” in ways that many of us never knew about when we were young.
So if you can’t help but wonder how...

Some of us are addicted to history. We can’t help it. I was well on my way to a probably less than useful PhD in Modern European History when I decided to chuck it in favor of a perhaps slightly more useful life as a journalist. But events keep luring me back to the historical pantry for one more bite of the apple.

First look image of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones released as production begins on The Aeronauts
Amazon Studios has released the first look at Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones as the pair reunite on the set of The Aeronauts.
BAFTA nominee Tom Harper, directs the film in which Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Eddie Redmayne reunite successful collaboration on The Theory of Everything, where Jones received an Oscar nomination and Redmayne went onto win the Oscar for his performance of Stephen Hawking.
Set in 1862, The Aeronauts follow wealthy young widow Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) and ambitious scientist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) as they mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. This is a journey to the very edge of existence, where the air is thin and the chances of survival are slim. As their perilous ascent reveals their true selves, this unlikely pair discover things about each other – and themselves – that help them find their place in the world they have left behind.

As a sort of mentor to the young Han Solo in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” Oscar-nominated actor Woody Harrelson gets a pretty sweet place in cinema history. He stars alongside Alden Ehrenreich as Tobias Beckett, a career criminal making his way through the seedy underbelly of the galaxy when the scruffy-looking upstart crosses his path. Along with the rest of the cast and crew, Harrelson weathered a change in the director’s chair four months into filming. He says he was “devastated” by the removal of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whose process he enjoyed.

Seeing worldwide sales sell-outs on “355” and “Ironbark,” from FilmNation, and Studiocanal’s “The Secret Garden,” the 2018 Cannes Film Festival proved the second big market in a row to buck, although only in part, longer-term pessimism.
After glacial-paced early trading, titles sold from Cannes first weekend both to the U.S. and abroad at a steady, though never spectacular, rate.
But if Cannes, like February’s surprisingly buoyant Berlin, suggested there is still life in the international independent film business, despite a tepid Sundance and dire American Film Market, it also delivered a sobering snapshot of new market realities.
Whichever way the 2018 Cannes Film Market is taken, heartening signs of continued market traction have to be placed in a context of a longer-term attrition in the independent theatrical market affecting both many mid-sized English-language movies and arthouse titles alike. The bottom hasn’t fallen out of either market. But their theatrical space,...

At least three major Chinese companies are competing to board “355,” the spy thriller from Jessica Chastain’s Freckle Films that is one of the hottest new projects on the market in Cannes. But for one of these well-established firms to secure the rights means overcoming a major challenge from a host of cashed-up newcomers.
Simon Kinberg is set to direct the film from a script by Theresa Rebeck, based on an original idea by Chastain. The film is being pitched at the Cannes Film Festival by FilmNation Entertainment and CAA Media Finance Group. Universal picked up the U.S. rights for more than $20 million Saturday. CAA is spearheading the sale of Chinese rights.
Bona Film Group, Wanda and Huayi Brothers are all looking to become equity investors in the female-driven picture and to secure the distribution rights in Greater China, sources say.

After a brutal stretch, a market is finally bringing back the swagger. Despite the Netflix-Cannes snafu which dominated the build-up to the festival, this is the most optimistic mood at the outset of a film mart in years.
The Efm heralded the bounce-back. It was a stabilizing market and the first for some time that indie buyers and sellers re-discovered common ground that had been more of a no-man’s land during a multi-year reconfiguration process needed to work out what constitutes a theatrical movie in today’s digital-first world.
The Marché sees the launch of an array of intriguing prospects even if some remain very much that – prospects. Big canvas movies come in the shape of Agc’s WWII epic Midway, Lionsgate’s franchise-hopeful Kingkiller Chronicle and FilmNation’s starry ensemble 355 which is getting a glam presentation on Thursday. The success or failure of the Cannes Film Festival market could depend on Netflix’s willingness to write big checks.
If the streaming giant spends big to land the star-studded projects that are coming to the Côte d’Azur looking for distribution, that’s good news for sales agents. If not, bidding wars could be few and far between.
Heading into Cannes, Netflix made waves by declining to premiere its films in competition. Their feud with the festival stems from a rule that requires any films that play at Cannes to have an exclusive theatrical release before appearing on streaming platforms, something that runs afoul of Netflix’s business model. The contretemps robbed Cannes of splashy debuts — Netflix had considered bringing the likes of Paul Greengrass’ “Norway” and Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” to the Croisette.
Despite the bad blood, Netflix looks like it could still be actively buying films. It...

Roland Emmerich is preparing to direct his next big action movie, and it doesn't deal with the world being obliterated by the fury of aliens or natural disasters. His next film is a World War II movie called Midway, which will tell the story of the legendary Battle of Midway.
According to Deadline, Woody Harrelson and Mandy Moore are in negotiations to join a strong ensemble cast of the film. There's no word yet on the actors who will join them, but it will be interesting to see who else they bring on board.
The film will tell the tale of the "turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II" and it "follows the soldiers and aviators who helped turn the tide of the war in June 1942."
This is a different kind of film project for Emmerich to take on. I'm sure the visuals will look great, but...

Exclusive: In what will be one of the biggest movies on sale at Cannes, Stuart Ford’s recently minted Agc Studios will be enticing buyers with Roland Emmerich’s WWII action epic Midway, which we understand has Woody Harrelson and Mandy Moore in negotiations to star as part of a strong ensemble cast.
Wes Tooke’s script about the iconic Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II, follows the soldiers and aviators who helped turn the tide of the war in June 1942. Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage” has opened with a solid $2.4 million in Thursday night preview screenings in North America.
Universal-Blumhoue’s “Truth or Dare” grossed $750,000 in Thursday night shows at 2,400 locations.
“Rampage,” from New Line and Warner Bros., showed its strongest performance among younger customers. “Rampage,” loosely based on the 1986 Midway arcade game, has been forecasted to debut between $37 million and $40 million from 3,950 theaters this weekend. The movie is expected to take the top spot from the second weekend of “A Quiet Place,” which has taken in $63 million in its first six days.
Johnson portrays a primatologist who shares a bond with a silverback gorilla who becomes a giant beast after a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong and creates an array of rampaging creatures. Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Joe Manganiello also star in the film, directed by Brad Peyton. The sci-fi adventure carries a reported $120 million price tag.

Independence Day director Roland Emmerich has signed on to direct a World War II film based on the legendary Battle of Midway. Lionsgate picked up the distribution rights to the film, and I'm sure they are hoping to ride off the coattails of Christopher Nolan's successful film Dunkirk. The thing is... Emmerich isn't even in the same league as Nolan when it comes to filmmaking talent. Thanks to Deadline, we have some details on the story that the film will tell:
The film is an epic telling of the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II. The story follows the real soldiers and aviators who pulled off the unbelievable to turn the tide of the war in June 1942.
The movie will have a $100 million budget and Lionsgate’s Patrick Wachsberger talked about the project, saying:

Cannes Film Festival yesterday saw another unveiling. Independence Day director, Roland Emmerich, has officially been confirmed to take the helm of the World War II project, Midway, which he will also co-produce.
The Battle of Midway in the South Pacific was a decisive naval battle in June 1942, six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. The U.S. Navy defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy near Midway Atoll after U.S. codebreakers were able to pinpoint the time and place of the attack. The damage to the Japanese fleet was so extensive that it never recovered and military historians regard the battle as a turning point in the war.
This won’t be the first time The Battle of Midway has been covered on film, back in 1976, Universal’s epic “Midway,” starring Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune,...

Several years ago, Mark Harris began feeling a little self-conscious about a gap in his film-history knowledge. As a journalist for Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine and the late, lamented Web site Grantland, among others, he'd covered the waterfront of contemporary moviemaking. As an author, his book Pictures at a Revolution dissected the moment in the late 1960s when the last gasp of the Golden Age studio system gave way to what become known as "New Hollywood." Ask him about the works of legends like, say, John Ford and Frank Capra,...

Veteran’s Day is November 11. While we all try to escape from the most exasperating Presidential Campaign in our history let me pay tribute to the Men and Women who have served in the military to insure we keep our electoral process and our freedoms.
Having served in the Navy four years (there he goes again!) I have a keen interest in any movie about the military, especially the sea service. I did serve during peace time so had no experience with combat but still spent most of my tour of duty at sea on an aircraft carrier, the USS Amerca CV66. Among other jobs I ran the ship’s television station for almost two years. Movies have always been important to me and so providing a few hours of entertainment every day when we were at sea was just about the best job I could have had.

In a film packed with nerd-baiting moments, the best scene in The Avengers for gamers was the one in which Tony Stark points out that a bored S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was playing Galaga on the bridge of one of the organisation's helicarriers. Having the stalwart space shooter get such a high-profile pop culture shout-out helped give the game some much needed pop culture love, reminding arcade veterans of how amazing the title was to play in the first place.

Roland Emmerich, Hollywood’s undisputed master of cinematic destruction, is remaining firmly in the genre of disaster porn for his next project.
It’s called Moonfall and, according to Deadline, has been snapped up by Universal in a deal said to be in the seven-figure ballpark. Working from his own spec script, the sci-fi flick paves the way for a reunion between Emmerich and Harald Kloser after 2012, who will be working closely with Spencer Cohen on the screenplay.
Boasting an all-too-familiar premise of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, Moonfall is said to follow “an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.” Hence the title.
Taking the global scope of 2012 and infusing it with the sci-fi elements of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Moonfall stands as the seventh collaboration between Emmerich and Kloser and by this stage in the game,...

Independence Day: Resurgence director and all-round maestro of cinematic destruction Roland Emmerich has teed up plans for his next movie and, spoilers, it doesn’t involve vengeful aliens.
Addressing the crowd at a special Fox screening of Independence Day, designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original blockbuster, Emmerich announced plans to create a war film based on the Battle of Midway. Set during the throes of World War II and, in particular, soon after Japan’s stealth attack on Pearl Harbor, it’ll follow an American plan to coordinate a deadly attack on a Japanese fleet.
It was a gruelling maritime battle that stretched for four days, but ultimately resulted in an emphatic victory for the Allies, who were able to intercept Japanese radio transmissions to pinpoint the exact location of the doomed fleet.

While his blockbuster sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, centers on the 20th anniversary of the fictitious "War of 1996," Roland Emmerich would like to turn his sights next towards a real life war story. On June 4, it'll be exactly 74 years since "The Battle of Midway" began- where the United States Navy obliterated an attacking Japanese fleet. That's the story Emmerich would like to lend his talents to next.
Last night, at a special 20th anniversary screening of Independence Day, Emmerich announced during a Q&A that his next film would be called Battle Of Midway. "At the time, the Americans were the underdog,” Emmerich said. “It was one of those moments where, against all odds, people came together and did the impossible. A lot of pilots died in this battle. I want to make a monument to them and it would be great to make a movie about it."
