Exclusive: Since being launched in 2017 by a quartet including Jesse Armstrong, Various Artists Limited (Val) has made shows ranging from Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You to Julia Davis’ Sally 4Ever, but bosses now see the comedy landscape heading in a somewhat different direction.
Fresh off the back of Sunday’s BAFTA win for Kat Sadler’s BBC comedy Such Brave Girls, head honcho Phil Clarke and comedy boss Jack Bayles are talking up the return of the sitcom in a landscape beset by budget woes and risk aversion that is nonetheless continuing to birth breakouts.
“The word we are getting from broadcasters is they want more traditional sitcoms with ‘A, B, C’ storylines and bigger characters,” Bayles tells Deadline. “We’ve been through this amazing era of drama and people have got so used to seeing that scale and ambition but trying to compete with that in half-hour,...

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

The second half of the British Emmys — the BAFTA TV Awards — are about to kick off. The first segment took place at the end of April when the BAFTA TV Craft Awards gave out gongs for below-the-line artists nominated for their work in this year’s best TV shows. Now, the main ceremony is taking place. This one is where all the big stars rock up as the acting categories are presented tonight in what is a live, televised ceremony broadcast from the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank.
The stars are decorating the red carpet thickly and fastly while the sweat drips from the brows of our journalists just as thick and fast. It’s sweltering here in London. Props, then, must go to “The Hobbit” star Richard Armitage, who dons a pink velvet suit jacket. Velvet is a brave choice in such hot weather but he looks dashing as anything.

The BAFTA TV Craft Awards took place on Sunday, April 28, with British TV host and documentarian Stacey Dooley hosting the event at East London’s The Brewery. The ceremony was the first half of the two BAFTA nights honoring the year’s best TV, with the Craft Awards dedicated to below-the-line categories just like the Creative Arts Emmys.
We attended Sunday’s ceremony and managed to speak to a number of nominated artists, including Adiescar Chase, who serves as the composer for Netflix’s hit feel-good LGBTQ+ series “Heartstopper.” Chase explained to us how she created the iconic sound of “Heartstopper,” noting that her conversation with director Euros Lyn exemplified how she works on the show.
“The great thing about ‘Heartstopper’ is that, in season two, Euros asked that I make the music feel new, feel like it’s developing as we are with the characters. So, a lot of...

Beyoncé almost teamed up with prolific filmmaker Clint Eastwood for his own take on A Star Is Born. The veteran actor had a lot of praise for the Grammy winner, so much so that he compared her to another well-known musician.

Born on 13 April 13 1973 in Harlem, New York, Bokeem Woodbine is an American actor. He first had an initial interest in music and was playing guitar for several rock bands. However, in 1992, at the age of 18, he landed a chance to work as an extra on the film Juice. This film, which featured stars such as Omar Epps, Tupac Shakur, and Queen Latifah, sparked an interest in acting for him. Although he never appeared in the finished film, Woodbine impressed Jaki Brown-Karman, the casting director. He made his TV acting debut a year later in 1993.

In early 1991, 20-year-old Tupac Shakur was torn between ambitions of acting and rapping, and struggling to catch a break on both fronts. He had studied theater at the Baltimore School for the Arts and toured with the west coast hip-hop collective Digital Underground, but acting opportunities were scarce and he had yet to finish the demo tape that would launch him to stardom. His luck would turn when Digital Underground’s road manager, Sleuth, received a call from Cara Lewis, the group’s booking agent at William Morris. A film director named Ernest Dickerson was looking for actors for a movie called Juice and they invited Money-b, a fellow member of the collective, to audition. Dickerson had earned acclaim for his work as Spike Lee’s director of photography on a run of films, including She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, and Jungle Fever.

In Cord Jefferson’s idea-dense “American Fiction,” no one wants to publish literary professor Thelonious Ellison’s latest novel. Thelonious — or “Monk” to his friends — has delivered a modern reworking of Aeschylus’ “The Persians” (hardly bestseller material to begin with), but all the industry can see is the color of his skin. The editors compliment his prose, but want to know what this manuscript “has to do with the Black experience.” In frustration, he dashes off a parody of the thug-life trauma porn the world seems to want, submits it to his agent, and suddenly, he’s the “man of the hour.”
If that sounds like the setup for a lit-world “Bamboozled,” then you might be surprised by how even-tempered the film feels. First published in 2001 (the year after Spike Lee’s confrontational satire came out), Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure” had fangs. Jefferson files them down — not necessarily a bad thing,...

Washington, June 17 (Ians) NASA’s Juno mission has captured lightning on Jupiter, the agency said. Juno captured the view as it completed its 31st close flyby of Jupiter on December 30, 2020. The image shows a vortex near Jupiter’s north pole. The spacecraft’s JunoCam instrument observed the glow from a bolt of lightning.
On Earth, lightning bolts originate from water clouds, and happen most frequently near the equator, while on Jupiter lightning likely also occurs in clouds containing an ammonia-water solution, and can be seen most often near the poles, NASA said.
In 2022, citizen scientist Kevin M. Gill processed the image from raw data from the JunoCam.
At the time the raw image was taken, Juno was about 32,000 km above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 78 degrees as it approached the planet.

Tupac Shakur has finally received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On June 7, the rapper was honored in a posthumous ceremony hosted by radio personality Big Boy, with Tupac's sister Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur accepting the honor on the late star's behalf. In his speech, documented in Variety's live stream, Hughes recognized Tupac's radical legacy, saying he "has become a global symbol of rebellion - a symbol as visible and important as Malcolm X and Che Guevara, and an inspiration for activists . . . Indeed, the entire world feels Tupac's message."

Lizzo wasn't shy about performing in front of some of the biggest stars in the world at the 2023 Met Gala. While playing some of her hits at the May 1 event, the star left the stage and moved out into the crowd. She soon began dancing with Gigi Hadid, who seemed more than happy to join in on the fun as Broadway producer Jordan Roth looked on. Fortunately, a photographer was on hand to capture the moment.
According to Vogue, Lizzo started her surprise performance by showing off her flute skills alongside fellow flautist James Galway. They played an excerpt from Mozart's "The Magic Flute." She then removed her silver Fendi cape to reveal a glittery Yitty bodysuit. She also performed "Truth Hurts," "Good as Hell," "Cuz I Love You," "Juice," and "About Damn Time," as well as "Flight of the Bumblebee" alongside Galway.

Paris, April 29 (Ians) The European Space Agency’s (Esa) Jupiter Icy moons Explorer or Juice mission, which began its journey to Jupiter two weeks ago, has faced an issue with its antenna.
According to the agency, Juice’s ice-penetrating Radar for Icy Moons Exploration (Rime) antenna could not yet be deployed as planned.
“During the first week of commissioning, an issue arose with the 16-metre-long Rime antenna, which is preventing it from being released from its mounting bracket,” the agency said in a statement.
Mission officials “continue” to work to “free the radar” and “they have lots of ideas up their sleeves”, the Esa said.

Back in 2021, content creator-focused fintech company Creative Juice launched with its debut product: Juice Funds, a pool of cash it described as “a groundbreaking way for creators to support each other and invest in their peers’ businesses.”
Creative Juice originally planned to make around $2 million worth of Juice Funds available. The idea was if creators had access to a large lump sum of liquid capital, they’d be able to grow their channels and their content far more quickly than if they were just reinvesting their monthly earnings from platforms like YouTube.
Creative Juice went on to raise its own fresh round of funding in April 2022, and subsequently upped the Juice Funds pool to $50 million.
The company also introduced two new variations of the fund: Juice Funds Refresh, where Creative Juice licenses creators’ existing back catalogs of YouTube content for upfront cash in order to get the associated ad revenues...

J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series who has been receiving extensive backlash after multiple transphobic remarks, is criticizing trans-rights supporters for attacking a British anti-trans rights activist, Kellie–Jay Keen Minshull, also known as Posie Parker.
Parker was in Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday as a part of her controversial Let Women Speak tour when she was met by over 2000 pro-trans counter-protesters, which is said to have substantially outnumbered her supporters. Naming a young Black man’s story after a transport stop gives off strong Fruitvale vibes, but Aristotle Torres’ feature debut reaches back further to the hip-hop morality tales of the early ’90s, like Boaz Yakin’s Fresh or Ernest Dickerson’s Juice — the wave that immediately followed John Singleton’s influential Boyz n the Hood. Surprisingly, given Torres’ history of videos for the likes of Ludacris and Nas, the soundtrack is light on rap, using unexpected needle drops like Pavarotti’s version of “La Donna e Mobile” to score scenes of spray-can anarchy on the New York subway.
In all other ways, however, Story Ave is very much a ’hood movie, in the sense that its young protagonist is both constrained and defined by the place where he lives, in this case the Bronx. That person is Kadir (Asante Blackk), a talented young artist tormented by the recent death of his disabled little brother.

Tupac Shakur's socially conscious poetry and fiery, political lyrics are forever cemented in music history, but the legendary rapper also had a burgeoning career in acting. Upon the time of his tragic murder in September 1996, Tupac was becoming all the more prolific as a performer, his filmography growing even after his death. What's more, there was a chance that, eventually, audiences would have seen the rapper/actor pop up in big-budget movies like the "Star Wars" prequels, in which George Lucas may have cast him as Mace Windu.
Tupac was always involved in the world of the stage ever since his childhood days at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he acted in Shakespeare productions that would influence his depictions of gang conflicts. The artist's breakout lead role was in the 1992 crime drama "Juice," in which future Mace Windu actor Samuel L. Jackson also appeared in. Besides this,...

One who feels that way is John SIngleton, who worked closely with Tupac and continued to admire him. Singleton even has an item dedicated to Tupac in his estate that’s now worth 75k.
