Fanboys is based on a screenplay by writers Ernest Cline, Dan Pulick, and Adam F. Goldberg.
Kyle Newman has been reported as saying that he is planning on making a sequel, and it would involve the group crashing the set of Attack of the Clones (2002). There have also been fan reactions as to having the sequel be the same premise as Fanboys, but involving another group of friends trying to steal a copy of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) (2001).
It could be something as simple as that it's his real name. However, more likely It's a reference to the movie The Thing (1982). There is a character with the same name in that film who constantly wears sunglasses, inside or out, day or night. The character gets the nickname in this film because he wears large thick glasses. (also possibly because he's always on his laptop, his nickname refers to the operating system).
The scene was strictly spoofing The A-Team TV series where the team leader Hannibal would always have a cigar in his mouth. They also drove around in a van not dissimilar to the one the Fanboys drive around in.
Linus was the only one of the group who was allowed a special advanced screening of Star Wars Episode I. After he finished watching the movie the group asked him how it was, he didn't answer. Later on when sitting with Eric, Linus says, "....you gotta keep the flaws. Crappy effects, real puppets. That's what makes it so good, ya know?" Which alludes to what many diehard Star Wars fans (and Generation X moviegoers) didn't like about Star Wars Episodes I, II and III is that they were overburdened with special effects and lacking on story, etc. However, the film leaves this ambiguous, so it is left to the viewer to decide. The rest of the group eagerly await the film on premier night and just as it's about to start, Eric says, "Hey guys, what if the movie sucks?", then the film ends.
This has been the question of many people, who want to see the movie Kyle Newman made without the reshoots from Steven Brill. Kyle Newman has stated that he's planning on releasing a director's cut by the time the sequel comes out.
