The third edition of the Austin festival since coming out of the pandemic — and dual strikes — hasn’t lost its shine: When it comes to creating an “it” movie for the spring or summer, SXSW remains a helluva tastemaker event to stoke the 18-34 crowd.
It’s where A Quiet Place triggered its first screams in 2018 before morphing into a $638M franchise (the third film is due this summer), and it’s where Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022 began its yearlong journey to Oscars 2023, taking home several trophies including Best Picture — a first for any SXSW world premiere.

The theatrical releases that saw the highest median return on investment (Roi) in 2023 were those whose casts reflected racial representation proportionate to the real-world U.S. population, according to the latest Hollywood Diversity Report from UCLA.
Horror movies like M3GAN (14.0 Roi) and Saw X (7.5 Roi) were among the films whose casts were 41 to 50 percent Bipoc, the category with the highest median Roi (1.1). Conversely, the category with the lowest Roi (-0.25) was the least diverse (less than 11 percent Bipoc cast). According to U.S. census data, 43.6 percent of the country in 2023 was Bipoc.
Proportionately representative movies also earned a median of $114.2 million worldwide, the second highest median box office take behind only movies whose casts were 31 to 40 percent Bipoc ($119.8 million). That latter category included the billion-dollar Barbie ($1.4 billion, to be exact), which won the worldwide box office in 2023. The lowest-earning category was again the least diverse, with a median of just $18.2 million globally.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the world is a beautiful place filled with unimaginable beauty and wonders beneath every shadow, racing riverbed, and endless sky. We need to remember how nature came first and what the world could look like if it were to retake its course. Thankfully, Dreamworks Animation‘s The Wild Robot trailer reminds us of Mother Nature’s grand and beguiling majesty, even if that vision is through the eyes of a character made of metal and wires.
The Wild Robot is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning #1 New York Times best-seller. The series has three books: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The story follows a robot – Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to its new surroundings to survive. Christopher Nolan’s deal with Universal for “Oppenheimer” included this: The studio, a leader in early release of films to home platforms, would need to make a very big exception.
At 122 days, “Oppenheimer” had the longest theatrical window of 2023. Compared to the year’s 84 other wide releases, it was more than triple the industry average of 37 days. Universal’s second-longest window belonged to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which was a bigger hit than Nolan’s film but lost theatrical exclusivity after 41 days.
Studios aren’t interested in specifics around theatrical windows — or, in offering PVOD data beyond top 10 lists that offer neither financial context nor independent verification. This is our attempt to provide a full-year view of theatrical windows, after prior surveys revealed a 30-day average for the first four months of 2023 and 40 days for early summer.

The state of female filmmaking in Hollywood is still tenuous despite the historic success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” according to two new university studies.
While “Barbie,” distributed by Warner Bros., made history as the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman, the 26th annual Celluloid Ceiling report from San Diego State University and the 2023 Inclusion in the Director’s Chair study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that female filmmakers — especially female filmmakers of color — are rarely hired by major studios.
“While Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ reigned supreme as the number one box office film, women remained dramatically underrepresented as directors,” the Celluloid Ceiling study reads, “accounting for just 16 percent of those working on the 250 top grossing films and 14 percent on the 100 top grossing films. It’s the ultimate illusion, Gerwig’s well-deserved triumph belied the gender inequality that pervades the mainstream film industry.”

Despite the box office success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Elizabeth Banks’ “Cocaine Bear,” female directors are not getting the same opportunities in Hollywood as their male counterparts. At the same time, major studios, which pledged to reexamine their employment practices in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, fail to produce many films from people of color.
That’s the stark findings of a new report by USC Annenberg’s Inclusion Initiative, which calls the entertainment industry’s pledges to support inclusion “performative acts” and “not real steps towards fostering change.” It’s the second report in as many days to find that despite some important box office milestones for female filmmakers — “Barbie” was both the year’s most successful film and the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman — studios still give their highest-profile gigs to male directors. I love going to the movies every year, but I really loved going to the movies this year. I saw Knock at the Cabin in Providence, I saw May December in Tallinn. I saw Enys Men in a small theater at Village East where it felt like everyone in the audience turned against the film but me. Somehow I liked Equalizer 3 despite loathing the other two. The worst movie I saw in theaters was Fast X, which I watched on an edible that put me to sleep during a set piece. I missed out on seeing Magic Mike’s Last Dance with some friends who wound up running into Christopher Nolan going to see Skinamarink. Celine Song’s quietly bewitching drama told a complex story of shifting identity and love with beguilingly simple means
• More on the best films of 2023
• More on the best culture of 2023
Slowly and quietly this year, the film Past Lives from Korean-Canadian dramatist and director Celine Song, has been working its discreet magic. Pretty much every new audience member has been turned into a convert, recommending it to a handful more who joined this film’s growing congregation of fans that can hardly describe the spell it has cast over our hearts. This is partly a deeply romantic and sad movie about lost love and missed chances. It’s also a kind of reverie about alternative existences, and what-if life paths. And this is a more urgent question for first- and second-generation immigrant communities in the US. They may well, as they grow into their 30s and 40s, consider the...

The episode of Revisited covering Joy Ride was Written, Edited, and Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Prank calls are like a right of passage for children of the 80s and 90s. The ritual of hanging out at a friend’s house on a Saturday night when you’re a kid usually included at least one or two calls to unsuspecting households with immature and entertaining interactions. Harmless enough? Well… Mostly. What if the person you prank called turned out to be a sadistic serial killer with limited patience for practical jokes, and even less patience for unruly young people who waste his time and give him the dreaded… blue balls. That is the premise for 2001’s Joy Ride (watch it Here) – a horror thriller about a pair of brothers and their childhood friend who are making their way...

Each of the other films in ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise is available on Peacock, but will ‘Ballad’ follow suit?
May the odds be ever in your favor this weekend, as you seek out tickets to “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” The newest entrant in the franchise is actually a prequel, and though preview screenings have already begun, it officially heads to theaters on Friday, Nov. 17.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” follows Coriolanus Snow, but not in the guise most viewers will know him. Instead of the iron-fisted President of Panem, “Ballad” follows Snow as an 18-year-old, desperate to revive the prestige of his fading family name. When he is assigned to mentor a young tribute with a highly independent streak for the 10th Hunger Games, Snow realizes he has an opportunity to vault himself to notoriety.

Adele Lim, the screenwriter behind “Crazy Rich Asians” and Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” animation, says that the opportunities for Asian filmmakers are growing as Hollywood is becoming more receptive to international talent.
“[In Hollywood] I felt that I was disadvantaged, coming from Malaysia. It is not the cultural nexus,” said Lim, whose infancy was in Malaysia, before her family moved to the U.S. “Later I realized the multicultural advantages of Asia.”
Lim, who also recently directed her first movie “Joy Ride,” was speaking at an on-stage event Wednesday in Taipei as part of the Taiwan Creative Culture Fest (Tccf), an annual convention and market for film and TV content and for story tech products.
“[When I arrived in Hollywood] “Flower Drum Song” and “Joy Luck Club” had preceded me. But there were few Asian writers. Hollywood was very masculine. Very white [..] There was this idea in America that Asians cannot be the hero of the story.

The first trailer for the movie adaptation of the “Mean Girls” musical has officially arrived, so get in loser, we’re going back to Northshore.
Much like the teaser that ran ahead of the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film, the footage not only introduces the new Plastics, Cady, Janis and more, but also contains plenty of moments from the original movie — and even an easter egg for the stage production.
We first meet Angourie Rice’s Cady, who is of course struggling in her new school. But, as we know, she quickly befriends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), who protect her from Regina George (Renee Rapp) — who apparently causes lights to flicker when she enters.
We also get a look at the performance of “Jingle Bell Rock” — though apparently, much more, uh, explicit, this time — along with Tina Fey’s Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadows’ Mr.

Adele Lim, screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians and writer-director of Joy Ride, talked about the realities of bringing Asian stories to mainstream global audiences in a panel, ‘Asian Rising Power in Hollywood’, on the second day of Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf).
Born in a small town in southern Malaysia, Lim explained that she studied in the U.S. and decided to work in Los Angeles after graduation as she wanted to be a writer and finally got a job as a writer’s assistant on a U.S. TV show.
“Growing up in Malaysia, I felt I was starting at a disadvantage, because I was nowhere near the cultural nexus of the world, which at that time was America and England, although that is all changing,” said Lim, who was also co-wrote Disney animation Raya And The Last Dragon.
