The upcoming season of Black Mirror will include a first for the franchise: a sequel. It was officially announced earlier this year that Black Mirror season 7 would include a sequel to the fan-favourite USS Callister episode from the fourth season. The brief synopsis reads: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.“
Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker told THR that the USS Callister sequel had “just wrapped” and revealed why he wanted to return to this story.
“This has been brewing for actually quite a long time. And it’s partly because of the way that it ends. The first one ends like you could just carry that story on and follow where they go now. So it was always like, ‘Hmm, I’m going to do that,’” Brooker said. “It was something we were looking at for quite a long time.

Warning: this Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
When teasing “Dot and Bubble”, Russell T Davies described the episode to Doctor Who Magazine as a “step into Black Mirror territory”. It certainly wears that inspiration on its sleeve, down to the specific instalment of Black Mirror it seems to be aping, “Nosedive”. The arch, vaguely Stepfordian tone, the broad swipe at social media, and the pastel tones of the production design are all very evocative of that episode of Charlie Brooker’s dark anthology show.
But this story of a far-future gated community where vapid rich kids are being systematically eaten alive by horrifying giant slugs also owes a tonal debt to Black Mirror. While for the most part a pitch-dark comedy, and generally pretty effective on that front, “Dot and Bubble” also shares Black Mirror’s self-consciously bleak world view, which – like the aforementioned vapid rich kids – takes some digesting.

Spoilers below for both "Doctor Who" and "Black Mirror."
In a recent interview about the latest "Doctor Who" episode, showrunner Russell T. Davies teased that the show would "step into 'Black Mirror' territory." It turns out that Davies is a big fan of the dystopian anthology series and its creator, Charlie Brooker. But even as his latest episode took inspiration from the show, he promised it'd still have that "Doctor Who" spin:
"[Brooker's] immensely brilliant. But there's a little bit more freedom and 'Doctor Who' madness in 'Dot and Bubble'. There's a sense of fun. And monsters in the middle of it... So although it's 'Black Mirror'-like, it's more 'Doctor Who.' ['Dot and Bubble']'s got the bones and the blood of our favourite show."
Sure enough, the latest episode of season 14 is clearly based off of "Nosedive." That's a famous season 3 "Black Mirror" episode, centered...

This article contains spoilers for the season 5 finale of "Star Trek: Discovery."
It's too early to tell where the finale of "Discovery" will rank among the franchise greats. While "The Next Generation" was allowed the dignity of a proper goodbye (at least, before "Star Trek: Picard" resurrected the series and gave us another drawn-out conclusion, that is) and "Deep Space Nine" was able to go out on its own terms, the same can't be said for instances such as "The Original Series," "Enterprise," or "Star Trek: Prodigy" -- a trio of shows that ended up canceled without any real fanfare. As we paid our last respects to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Booker (David Ajala), and the crew of the USS Discovery, fans at least were able to enjoy a certain amount of closure ... even if that finale ultimately wasn't the plan for the unsuspecting creative team, as we recently learned.

New Exorcist Director Mike Flanagan Is 'Terrified' To Be Taking On The Horror Classic [Atx Festival]
Earlier this month, horror mastermind Mike Flanagan was announced as the new heir apparent to the "Exorcist" franchise, assuming the reins from David Gordon Green in what's being described as a "radical new take" on the truly scary source material. Little is known about the "Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass" creator's plans for the long-running property, but at the annual Atx festival in Austin today, Flanagan spoke frankly about the pressure of crafting a new story in the shadow of one of the most frightening tales ever told.
"For 'The Exorcist' specifically, I'm f**king terrified," Flanagan admitted at a panel attended by /Film's Ryan Scott. A spotlight on adaptations titled "From Book To Script To Screen," the event also featured a number of other panelists, including the executive producers behind AMC's "Interview with the Vampire," ABC's "Will Trent," Netflix's "Black Mirror," and the Apple TV+ series "Silo.

Charlie Brooker anticipates a lot of things. As the creator and writer of Black Mirror, his Emmy-winning sci-fi Netflix series has predicted everything from new Apple technology to the election of a certain U.S. president.
With the season six episode “Joan Is Awful,” Brooker knew the AI-centered story would be timely. But even his dystopian crystal ball couldn’t have foreseen that the Ally Pankiw-directed installment starring Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek would become a flashpoint in Hollywood’s AI battle.
“A couple of times on the show, there’s been something I’ve written and then something similar happens in the real world similar-ish,” says Brooker. “Narcissistically, you start to feel like, ‘This is too big a coincidence. I feel like I’m living in a simulation.’”

Mads Mikkelsen...Cillian Murphy...Giancarlo Esposito...by now, we know you've seen the same old names suggested for the McU's Doctor Doom time and time again.
With The Fantastic Four fast approaching and rumours swirling that the Latverian dictator will appear in a post-credits scene, all signs point to us meeting the new Victor Von Doom as soon as next year. However, none of the popular decisions listed above seem like a perfect fit to us.
In this feature, we've rounded up several alternative suggestions who would each be suitably terrifying and formidable as the McU's Doom. Crucially, they're not the names you'd necessarily expect to see.
To find out who we think could square off with Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing as a villain capable of being the next Saga's big bad, click on the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

If you've never sought out the truth behind sci-fi movies and TV shows, you've probably never believed what was happening on your screen. From traveling through time and space to discovering aliens, the genre can have a lot of twists and turns that are hard to imagine in real life.
But you'd be surprised how far science has come and how close humanity is to making these fictional stories real. Here are 10 sci-fi TV shows and movies that aren't true, but could have happened in real life.
Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott's Alien is one of those movies you don't want to believe could ever come true. However, there is one detail that does seem realistic. If space travel becomes as common as we think it will, the spaceships won't all look like a brand new yacht in the sky. The luxury ships will be for the rich, while the rest...

“We waited for the technology to catch up. And the technology has broken us.” So Russell T Davies told the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine about series 14, episode five “Dot and Bubble”. Tech breaking people sounds fitting for an episode Davies describes as Doctor Who’s “clearest step into Black Mirror territory.”
Set in a colony on an alien planet, “Dot and Bubble” is the story of Lindy Pepper Bean (Callie Cooke), a citizen of the happy, harmonious and social-media-absorbed world of Finetime. When Lindy’s friends start disappearing and mysterious monsters appear to be in operation, will Ruby and the Doctor be able to convince Finetime’s residents of the truth before it’s too late?
The idea for the episode first came to Davies 15 years ago, he told Dwm’s Benjamin Cook. During an LA lunch ahead of the series 11 launch, he pitched it to Steven Moffat,...

"73 Yards" is the strongest episode of the new "Doctor Who" season so far, which is surprising considering it's the first one that barely features the Doctor at all. Showrunner and episode-writer Russell T Davies has taken a cue from season 4's Doctor-lite episode "Turn Left," taking us through years of the companion's life without the Doctor around to help her out. The results are terrifying: as soon as the Doctor's gone, Ruby finds herself followed by a mysterious old woman. The woman magically stays exactly 73 yards away from Ruby at all times, and whenever Ruby sends someone else to talk with her, they freak out and suddenly want nothing to do with her.
It's a mysterious premise that puts Ruby through the wringer like we've never seen before. First, she has to spend a few nights alone at an inn filled with the world's rudest patrons. Then she goes...

Frisbee, even in its ultimate competitive form, doesn’t require the most astute knowledge of play but what would happen if you came across someone who hadn’t the faintest clue how it worked? In Tell Me Where I’m Going Wrong by writer/director Kyle Jon Shephard, the comedic notion of someone not being able to grasp how to play the game is stretched to the most absurd lengths resulting in a hilarious short where a socially awkward guy fails miserably at a simple after work session bewildering everyone with his ineptitude. Shephard keeps us teetering on a tightrope of brilliantly executed deadpan comedy right through to the very end where our hapless frisbee player suddenly comprehends what is required of him and his motor skills but at the very worst of times. Today, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2023. The numbers shine a light on what worked, what flopped, and how Netflix may move forward in the future.
Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com ‘One Piece’ to Rule Them All
The most-watched show on Netflix in the second half of 2023 was “One Piece.” The live-action remake of an anime classic racked up an incredible 71.6 million views and over 541 million hours. The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.
One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.
Netflix’s remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a hit this year.

As a Virgo, I’m all about order. As a kid, I created my own card catalog for my collection of books, as if I were a library. I still alphabetize and catalog all of my music on Discogs. Even my Emmy notes are neatly organized by year, going all the way back to 1996.
That’s why I wasn’t happy in the late 1990s when hourlong shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Desperate Housewives” entered the Emmy comedy race. Hourlong dramedies are not comedies! No one ever called “All in the Family” — which had some deep, dark moments — a drama, and yet there were a couple of laughs in “Desperate Housewives” (which opened with a death!) and suddenly it’s a comedy?
Sadly, I lost this battle years ago. And as we know, the comedy race is really now a dramedy race. The frontrunner, FX’s “The Bear,” is famously...

“Things are moving along nicely with our Dunk & Egg spinoff,” the author and executive producer of the HBO megahit series wrote on his blog May 21, 2024. “I am told they just had the first table read, and that it went great.”
Martin also hinted at coming announcements of the show’s cast as well as the progress of bringing the first of his three Dunk & Egg novellas to life.
In April 2023, HBO announced it had ordered the show, fully titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. From the strange and wicked and peculiar mind of Greek mastermind Yorgos Lanthimos comes another disquieting new film that will disturb even more people. Only a few months after premiering Poor Things at the 2023 Venice Film Festival (here's my review of that one), Lanthimos is back on the festival circuit with his next film titled Kinds of Kindness. It's nearly three hours in total and instead being of one, long film it's three different stories cut together into a triptych feature that plays more like a mashup of funky "Black Mirror" ideas than something more straightforward. As expected with Lanthimos, it's proper mindfuckery of the highest order. Three weird stories that most probably won't enjoy watching because they're so strange and unsettling and don't follow the typical cinematic narratives most are familiar with. In fact, I'd say Kinds of Kindness is Yorgos Lanthimos's Twilight Zone. Sort of? Maybe? Many bizarre...

After his famed role as Don Draper on AMC’s critically acclaimed drama series Mad Men, Jon Hamm has experienced a particularly peculiar career transition in recent years. Also known for his work in Sucker Punch & Top Gun: Maverick, the actor, 53, has acted in both highly regarded film and TV roles during his career.
But did you know, nestled within his portfolio of work, there lies a film that has almost slipped through the cracks of cinematic memory?
John Hamm in Stolen | 2 Bridges Productions
In 2009, he took on the role in Stolen, a frequently overlooked chapter of Hamm’s life that true cinephiles may recall. Though the actor’s renowned charm and depth could elevate any role, this murder mystery remarkably stood as an endeavor that slipped past audiences and critics alike.

British actor Janet Montgomery has landed a starring role as a young Faye Dunaway in Jonathan Baker’s supernatural love story “Fate,” a film that is shooting in Vancouver for Baker Entertainment.
The film will toggle between a yesteryear version of the character (Montgomery) and a present-day incarnation (Dunaway), spanning much of the protagonist’s entire lifetime. “Fate” revolves around a firefighter (Brandon Routh) who connects with a stranger from the past Tilly (Montgomery) while he’s healing at a rehabilitation center and is transported through time to find the only thing saving his soul — his realization of true love, according to a producer’s logline.
Highland Film Group is selling rights to the $10 million film, which also stars Harvey Keitel, at the Cannes Marche.
Dunaway is on the ground in Cannes, where HBO screened the much-anticipated biographical documentary “Faye.”
Montgomery was cast out of hundreds of actors vying for the role.

It’s one of those perfect Cannes mornings. The sun is shining, there’s a slight breeze off the sea and the streets are not yet stuffed with pedestrians hustling towards screenings or official festival business. Lucas Bravo matches the city’s calm energy when he emerges from a back room of an airy second-floor apartment just a stone’s throw from the Croisette. He takes a seat on the sofa opposite The Hollywood Reporter for what will be his first conversation about his Cannes Film Festival selection, The Balconettes.
Writer, filmmaker and actress Noémi Merlant, known for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, directed Balconettes, which centers on a Marseille neighborhood during a summer heat wave. Three roommates gleefully meddle in the lives of their neighbors from their balcony until a late-night drink turns into a bloody affair. Netflix’s “Black Mirror” returns to the Emmy Awards after a four-year break with its sixth season that premiered back in June 2023. The trajectory of the Charlie Brooker anthology series at the Emmys has been a tumultuous journey, particularly in recent years. The science-fiction dystopia used to dominate the limited/movie genre, winning Best Television Movie for three consecutive years at its height, before the Television Academy ruled that it must compete for the drama categories for its fifth season in 2020, ending its streak. Then the following year, the top category for limited series was changed to Best Limited or Anthology Series, placing “Black Mirror” back into the genre, but in the more competitive limited series race rather than the standalone television movies.
Despite the many radical switches, the program has managed an impressive eight wins out of 14 nominations overall. With its new string of six anthology episodes that star various actors including Salma Hayek,...

Science fiction creators never cease to amaze us with their unbridled flights of fancy. Whether it's 'soft' sci-fi, which emphasizes philosophical and social issues in imaginative and futuristic settings, or 'hard' sci-fi, which focuses specifically on the scientific component of futuristic scenarios, it's always highly inventive conceits, crazy plot twists, and mind-blowing depth of thought. Luckily, Netflix is full of great shows in the sci-fi genre. Here are ten shows streaming this May whose concepts absolutely blew us away.

To call Black Mirror a modern-day Twilight Zone is a failure to comprehend the metaphor of the series title.
A black mirror is the reflective black screen you stare into whenever your TV, phone, or laptop is turned off. It's whatever is left of the dream, the fantasy, that technology feeds you after you turn the mechanism off.
In other words, nothing.
The show's creator, Charlie Brooker, seems fascinated by the nightmare of our technologically driven society.
Since the show debuted in 2011, when AI was merely a speck on the horizon, we have transcended Brooker's nightmares of what we might become.
We have embraced AI to the point that we find human interaction boring, stressful, and anti-climactic compared to hyperbolic simulations of the human experience.
To watch Black Mirror's earlier seasons and to enter its universe is to see the worst aspects of ourselves reflected -- to experience the...

The 2024 BAFTA TV Awards very much celebrated the best of British TV tonight as the majority of big-name stars and more recognizable shows fell away to British shows and stars. The likes of “Succession” and “The Last of Us” went home empty-handed at the Royal Festival Hall. “Top Boy,” “The Sixth Commandment,” and “Such Brave Girls” claimed the three big prizes at the ceremony hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.
“Top Boy,” Netflix’s hit show about two London drug dealers dealing with gang violence in East London, won Best Drama Series over “The Gold,” “Happy Valley,” and Emmy hopeful “Slow Horses.” Producers Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind came backstage to discuss their victory, which came for the fifth and final season of the fan favorite.

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards, with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.
Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.
