Feminists don't get the humour
14 March 2024
Reviewers are too scared at being branded as being sexist to give an objective review of this film .If you can be objective you will see that they are both victims of their shortsighted view of the opposite sex which is stopping them from finding love. For myself I thought the chemistry between Butler and Heigl was amazing .Nearly all the scenes between the two worked well ,from their first confrontation ,to his present to help her sex life and it's hilarious consequences .Heigl is particularly funny when insisting she never flicks her bean and her orgasm in the restaurant was every bit as funny as Meg Ryan's scene .The dance scene followed by the kiss in the elevator was really sexy (and they both were fully dressed ,take note directors )but the scene in the corridor where Butler "pulls up anchor "really tugs at the heart strings .The final scene in the balloon could have been better written especially since the preceding scene had set the stage so well.

Makes no sense
21 January 2024
Wanted to like this film but the writing and directing are pretty useless. The ending could have been clever except for the fact that it makes Kate Beckinsale's sacrifice unbelievable. The idea that you would go to prison and punish your family so badly has to show that the sacrifice was worth it .Unfortunately the reveal shows it wasn't. Alan Alda and Matt Dillon are obviously not convinced as their acting is poor and fails to convince the audience David Schwimmer is thrown to the wolves and is never given any dialogue to express his concern over his wife's course of action ,which makes his subsequent actions seem excessively cruel.

It could have been a really good film because the reveal was surprising but it needed a top director to weave the strands of the plot together so it could be presented in a realistic manner.

Jean Arthur's worst film
9 January 2024
I am a massive fan of Jean Arthur but this film fails on so many levels. The idea that she would get married in such a short space of time doesn't fit with the narrative of her loving her first husband and the film goes downhill from there. Both Fred McMurray or Melvyn Douglas fail to convince the audience that they actually love their wife. This is in stark contrast to Cary Grant who we totally believe loves Irene Dunne in My Favourite Wife.

Early on we hear that Douglas's secretary loves both men and the audience expects that at some point she will be reintroduced to console the losing husband ,instead she is just a loose end .Instead we are left with a very unsatisfactory ending where she picks no one but the law decides MacMurray is her rightful husband but she keeps Douglas as a back up in case Mac Murray doesn't keep up to his promises. Even Jean Arthur can't save this Turkey.

Miles too slow
19 November 2023
Some great scenes and if the film was made by Hitchcock it would could have been great. Christoph Waltz was excellent but eventually even his character doesn't make sense -he would really be stupid enough to trust Brad Pitt??The opening scene is genuinely tense ,well written and well acted but even then you have to suspend your disbelief that the Jews would be lying under the floor boards in the middle of the day out in the country miles from anyone .The only other scene that was exciting was with Diane Kruger in the cellar bar .These two scenes highlight the potential of the film and director to inspire the actors but unfortunately Tarantino falls back to his usual boring over indulgence of trying to shock the audience with violence -it's incredibly boring and sad to watch.

He has tons of money and studios will indulge him because he is a name but that's all he is .He is no longer a talent which is evidenced by Brad Pitt's worse ever performance and that is quite an achievement.

Not bad at all
18 November 2023
Reminds me of a French Kiss except Danny Boon is certainly no Kevin Kline and his character makes very little sense at all .He can find new jobs that straddle the whole world with very little notice.

The idea of superstition leading to Diane Krugers character going to plan a half an hour marriage was just about plausible but for her to then change her plans and follow Danny Boon to Africa was kinda insane .Adding to that by making Boons character a moron who has no clue what she is up to the film loses any real chance to be taken too seriously. It is only after he finds out what she has done that the two characters actually become a believable couple The lion scene is woeful and wouldn't have taken much for it to be funny. Having said that it does have some funny scenes especially when she attacks him in the dentist chair and when she gives him hair remover instead of shampoo.

Kruger was good in National Treasure and is funny in this but the script and direction wasn't good enough.

Covert Affairs (2010–2014)

Surprised it lasted 5 seasons
27 June 2023
Although I kinda enjoyed the show ,objectively it is majorly flawed. Annie Walker works in some instances because the audience cares about her but the plot lines are beyond ridiculous. She is always following suspects she knows with no disguise and they never notice her. The blind guy is just a terrible actor and the idea that he could work in the field is just unrealistic .Henry Wilcox can get himself out of prison and everyone then believes everything he says and allows him back into a position of power. It's a show you can enjoy but need to take with a large pinch of salt. It's a show that you couldn't seriously recommend to anyone else.

Hope it improves from here
8 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As somebody has pointed out the show has been pretty successful until now .This episode is weak on a couple of counts. The escape from the White House is totally implausible and emerges just in time to save Rose Then he hesitates to kill the assassin when both their lives are at risk knowing they are now both on the run .Enjoyed so far but tying up loose ends is always the difficulty in these types of shows.

The difficulty is making it believable .How are they going to escape and investigate with the might of the White House working against them ?The vice President. Also comes across as incredibly unbelievable He knows he has been corrupt but tries to be aggressive with Farr who can out him.

The Nanny: Strange Bedfellows (1995)

Great episode
8 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The funny thing about the Nanny is that often certain scenes that are outstanding rather than the whole episode. Two great scenes are seen in this episode .The first is when lands home drunk and climbs into the wrong bed and the second when she thinks MrSheffield is going to propose. Drescher is excellent in both scenes and both scenes make you laugh out loud (something that is very rare nowadays) Stumbled across the pilot on YouTube and thought it was charming and got hooked. It's far from perfect but has heart and perks you up .Would love to know how much input Drescher actually had and how much was the writers.

Ultimately unrealistic
30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the film and the actors were very good but cutting your fingers off to make a point is ultimately unrealistic. No one would do it. Delving into the nuances of friendship and the unseen compromises and resentments that exist in most friendships was intriguing and a very difficult task but wrapping up the story in a satisfying manner proved too much for the writers. Barry Keoghan was quite exceptional and along with Farrell (whose sadness at losing his friend and being thought of as being dull was beautifully acted )deserve the accolades. Even with its glaring faults it's certainly worth watching.

Dunne and Grant are brilliant
31 July 2022
Of course people can pick holes in the plot and by modern standards it can be a bit dated but comedic brilliance from the two main stars is a joy .Irene Dunne really was a fantastic comic actress and she is just so convincing as Grants wife and mother to their children .It is so sad to think that these type of films are no longer made .

Garsons best performance
17 April 2022
It's fun ,it's romantic and cannot be taken too seriously. This film was made to entertain and on that level it certainly works .All the supporting cast were excellent but it was Garson who stole the show .Her subtle expressions and lively wit help endear Elizabeth to the audience and her performance is on a different level to Lawrence Olivier whose performance was very uneven excellent in patches but barely believable in some scenes. Have watched a few of Garson's performances and this one is her best - the bow and arrow scene and the refusal of Darcy's proposal are both funny and artistic excellence of the highest order.

Yellowstone (2018– )

First show I've enjoyed in years
24 March 2022
Watched Succession but hated every character in the show ,so didn't care what happened to them so lost interest. Yellowstone is exactly the opposite I care about virtually every character in the show so am totally invested in the storyline. They slowly give us clues as to why the different characters are so flawed. In Succession they basically argue these are rich so they must be spoilt and crazy without exploring the individual.

Great musical
30 December 2021
Audrey Hepburn is very good but Wendy Hiller is better. Loved My Fair Lady and it really is excellent but the 1938 original is an acting masterclass. Still My Fair Lady is a musical and the songs are brilliant .They don't make films like this anymore.

Never tire of watching

Robert Donat and Madeline Carroll are without doubt romance personified. The scene where she removes her stockings is the sexiest in cinema history. Tension humour and romance .Hitchcock at his best.

Worst Bond film ever
21 November 2021
Seriously crap film .The first 20 minutes were ok but after that it was poor. The action scene in the forest was worse than what you would see in a TV movie -are criminals really that stupid to be so easily run off the road. The script was garbage and some of the shooting scenes reminded me of computer games. It will probably take good money because after the pandemic people are desperate to go to the cinema but this shocker has really damaged the brand .No wonder Danny Boyle did a runner.

So many are taken in by this
3 November 2021
Basically the show is about rich people who are stupid ,selfish and lack any morals .Where is the nuanced writing ?It just appeals to people's prejudices that are rich people are evil and incredibly stupid ,witnessed by both Kendall's and Logan's actions Not one character is nice ,they all stab each other in the back but expect support. In real life there are nice people who get genuinely blindsided by immoral actions but nothing any character did on this show would surprise any of the other characters .It's just not realistic on any level.

Terrible film

Thought it might be interesting to watch an early Carey Lowell performance. Total waste of time .The script was so bad that no actor could come close to a decent performance.

Hitchcock's least successful film
11 October 2021
Watched because Hitchcock described it as his best -he must of been drunk. The characters are very unbelievable and the screenplay dull without any credible surprises. Even Cottons last scene was totally unbelievable and poorly executed. Compared to Dial M and North by North West it was frankly crap.

Epitomises the best of Chuck and Sarah
10 September 2021
The best seasons were the first two but this was one of the best of season 3. Sarah is devastated by Shaws unexpected test for Chuck and whatever the outcome she loses .If Chuck passes the test he isn't the man she loves if he fails it ,he can't be with Sarah or could even be dead. The ending is both clever ,exciting and entices you into the next episode.

Plot unrealistic but excellent performances
18 May 2021
Really struggling to find any decent films to watch but stumbled on this .Reviews rate it at 5.5/10 but the performances of all the actors were excellent. The accents were decent but essentially they caught the characteristics and irrationality of human nature .It's essentially a fairytale and as such unrealistic but within the confines of the plot it works .

Mirren is shockingly bad
14 March 2021
Could have been a really good thriller but for two things .The action sequences are so over the top ridiculous that you just roll your eyes watching them and secondly the terrible acting by Helen Mirren .Her Russian accent was bad but her acting was totally unconvincing and made her character a joke . The other actors were fine and the twists and turns were clever but that's what makes the faults in the film worse.Very few films are as clever as this but bad acting by Mirren and unrealistic action scenes spoil what could have been really good

Terrible film
24 February 2021
Love watching Cary Grant films and was looking forward to enjoying this one .Unfortunately it just doesn't work on any level. No wife would put up with such an incompetent husband .I didn't laugh once and I repeatedly watch his films .The writing is truly awful

Curiosity value only
23 January 2021
With Michael Curtiz as the director I was expecting better .Howard had very little to work with and though Kay Francis was beautiful and acted well enough but the relationship fails to convince .Not enough time is taken to make the relationship believable and the writing is really poor; it's a pity because it could have worked.
