The Judge (2014)
The Judge
I was able to see this before the October release and although I read some of the reviews that were released recently I started to have some reservations however, I have disagreed with some critics in the past and figured I'd make up my own mind about this film. Gratefully I did not have to worry because it was time well spent. The performances were excellent and it was witty as well and engaging. When looking at the posters (without giving much away) I got the impression that this film looks like something out of a John Grisham novel or an episode of Law and Order, and while there is the trial going on, the movie is more of a focus of this man's (Downey) relationship with his father (Duvall), his family, his unresolved issues with his present life and the life he left behind. Downey and Duvall don't disappoint as well as the ensemble cast. If you're looking for a movie with heart, engaging performances and not a "courtroom drama", this is definitely the right film.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Exceptional film. This is a film that makes no apologies.
I have to tip my hat to Mel Gibson. In a tradition of films and mini-series that tell the story of Christ, not one has ever shown the brutal reality of the crucifixion. Every film up to now has given a very watered down account of this event but this film brings you to a place where you feel every lash, every humiliation and every nail driven. Jim Caviezel was excellent in his representation of Christ as a strong manly figure as opposed to the frail flower in most Christian based films. I didn't see the anti-Semitic references everybody is talking about, if anything you end up hating the Romans more than the Jews. In my opinion, if anyone finds this film anti-Semitic it's because they just want to. Mel Gibson told a historical account without pointing fingers and a strong message to Christians about what their faith is really all about which is love and the sacrifice it took to carry out that love. If anyone seeing this film who calls themselves a Christian or just an educated person, leaves the film pointing fingers at the Jewish race then obviously they never understood the movie at all and should reevaluate their thinking.
