- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesMichael NyqvistAlfie AllenAn ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters who killed his dog and stole his car.Not only does this action flick feature fantastic action that's tightly choreographed and cleanly shot, it also has a tight story that doesn't rely too heavily exposition and manages to create a unique world that feels tangible.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsJake GyllenhaalMélanie LaurentSarah GadonA man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.
- DirectorMark BurtonRichard StarzakStarsJustin FletcherJohn SparkesOmid DjaliliWhen Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseRebecca FergusonJeremy RennerEthan and his team take on their most impossible mission yet when they have to eradicate an international rogue organization as highly skilled as they are and committed to destroying the IMF.One of the most enjoyable action flicks this side of the 2010s, the latest entry in the 'Mission: Impossible' features all the bombastic action you'd expect as well as an entertaining story and well-rounded characters.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.Finally, a belated sequel that's actually good; maybe the best movie in the franchise, aside from perhaps 'The Road Warrior', this balls-to-the-wall action movie is full of furious fights and beautiful cinematography. The story is simple but effective and the characters restrained yet engaging.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsColin FirthTaron EgertonSamuel L. JacksonA spy organisation recruits a promising street kid into the agency's training program, while a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. This has quickly become one of my favourite films of all time, let alone the year. The 'Bond' satire is sharp and witty but never becomes the sole focus of the flick, which instead creates well-rounded characters and an entertaining story of it's own. Samuel L. Jackson is brilliant, the action is fast yet brutal and the film is funny too.
- DirectorF. Gary GrayStarsO'Shea Jackson Jr.Corey HawkinsJason MitchellThe rap group NWA emerges from the mean streets of Compton in Los Angeles, California, in the mid-1980s and revolutionizes Hip Hop culture with their music and tales about life in the hood.An amazing bio-pic that is fun and entertaining whilst shedding some light on a perhaps more 'unknown' (aside from the music) story - as well as reaching a wider audience. It is a fantastic watch and has some great performances too.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeSarah SnookNoah TaylorAs his last assignment, a temporal agent is tasked to travel back in time and prevent a bomb attack in New York in 1975. The hunt, however, turns out to be beyond the bounds of possibility.A fantastic time-travel film that stands up to scrutiny even on multiple watches, this unpredictable story is riveting fro start to finish. It has a much lower budget than most features yet stands up high due to a fantastic script; it should be seen by every fan of science fiction or time travel.
- DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.A emotional and inventive animation that's entertaining and compelling; it's mature stuff that treats its audience as intelligent and tells its story incredibly well.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. The best horror film of the year, this is much more psychological than many others in the genre. It isn't terrifying as such, but is creepy in a long-lasting kind of way, and is a wonderfully slower movie with much more focus on tone and building suspense than overt gore.
