In a September 12, 1997 piece for The Wall Street Journal titled “Gridiron Feminism,” Camille Paglia argued that not only is football “congruent with an enlightened feminism,” but that the sport “is one of the best educational tools for showing women how to advance in the ‘hostile workplace,’—which current sexual harassment regulations try to control through intrusive, after-the-fact legal remedies.”

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will open the 15th annual TCM Classic Film Festival on Thursday, April 18 with a 35mm screening of the classic neo-noir Pulp Fiction (1994). Two-time Academy Award nominee John Travolta will attend to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film.
Pulp Fiction kicks off a weekend of programming set within the theme “Most Wanted: Crime and Justice in Film,” as well as the 30th anniversary of the network.
“Pulp Fiction is one of the most important and influential movies of the 1990s. It was Quentin Tarantino’s magnum opus and the beginning of a well-deserved comeback for John Travolta,” said Ben Mankiewicz, TCM primetime anchor and official host of the TCM Classic Film Festival. “Like Bonnie and Clyde and The Godfather, it changed our thinking about the type of stories Hollywood could tell.”

Samuel L. Jackson is the highest-grossing actor of all time. The iconic actor, who made his feature film debut in 1972 independent drama Together for Days, has seen his name so far attached to 142 films, which have amassed more than $27 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
The big reason behind the eye-watering figure is Jackson’s frequent appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wherein he portrays Nick Fury. However, when fans think about the veteran actor, the first character that pops into their mind, more often than not, is Jules. A hitman, who tends to deliver sermons before killing his targets.
Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction
It won’t be far-fetched to say, Pulp Fiction is his career-defining stint. Yet, as far as Jackson’s opinion is concerned the 1994 cult classic sits below another crime thriller.

If you look at Samuel L. Jackson's IMDb page, you will see a list of credits in the hundreds. For decades, Jackson has gradually become one of the most successful actors in Hollywood, appearing in movies of all genres at all budget levels in roles of all sizes. He's created a litany of indelible characters that make him someone so many actors — particularly Black actors — want to mold their careers after. Even if he has a dynamite screen persona he can tap into whenever he wishes, Jackson is one of the most versatile actors working, and though he's currently in his mid-70s, he shows no signs of slowing down.
Despite all the credits, there will be one role mentioned in the headline for his obituary when he eventually passes on hopefully many, many years from now. That role is Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's blockbuster sophomore feature "Pulp Fiction.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 5, “You Good?”]
Heading into “City Primeval’s” second half, two Episode 5 conversations — neither, ostensibly, about the case at hand — provide a little something extra to chew on. The first savory chat takes place as Sweety (Vondie Curtis Hall) and Clement (Boyd Holbrook) wait for Bulldozer Burt’s (David Cross) lawncare workers to punch out for the day, so they can blackmail their first mark from the late Judge Guy’s little black book. As they sit idle, without music blasting (for once), Sweety remembers a time many years ago when he was roused from a sound slumber for the right reasons. His friend wanted him to come jam with Miles Davis! Sweety hustled over and did just that, slapping da bass until 6 a.m. “No chit chat, mother fucker just played,” Sweety says about Miles. But the jazz legend did share a few choice words with the future bartender.

The new FX limited series “Justified: City Primeval” is a fish-out-of-water story featuring a long, lanky fish in a Stetson hat. His name is Raylan Givens, and you might know him from “Justified,” the FX crime series that made itself at home in the hollers of Kentucky among white supremacists and other Southern miscreants from 2010 to 2015. Played by Timothy Olyphant with a smooth gait and seen-it-all demeanor, Deputy U.S. Marshal Givens, created by the unmatchable crime fiction writer Elmore Leonard, now finds himself in Detroit, where a maniac is sowing chaos, a dirty judge has been murdered and the rules of engagement are as wild as the West ever was.
But if Raylan is new to the criminal ways of Motor City, Leonard, who died in 2013, most certainly wasn’t. This was his home, and the setting for much of his most memorable work. He knew the crooks and the crooked cops,...

Motor City, here comes Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant)! Last seen fleeing Appalachia in the acclaimed drama Justified (2010-2015), the lawman extends his presence in the Elmore Leonard universe with Justified: City Primeval. The FX spinoff is based on the late crime writer’s City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. Set in Motor City, the gritty novel features local cop Ray Cruz, but in the series (premiering Summer 2023), Givens is the protagonist and Cruz (Paul Calderon) is a retired homicide detective. “Tim started banging the drum to put Raylan in this world,” reports executive producer Michael Dinner, “and that’s how this mashup started.” In Justified: City Primeval, the timeline has moved ahead 10 years and Raylan is now part-time dad to teen Willa (played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian). In Detroit, he runs into Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), “one of Elmore’s great antagonists,” Dinner says.

Veteran Canadian-American voice actress Cree Summer has joined the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart, sources tell Deadline. A rep for Marvel declined comment.
As Deadline reported earlier this month, Sacha Baron Cohen also has been tipped for a role in the series. Since our story ran, there has been further proof that Baron Cohen has joined the MCU, something Marvel and his reps have refused to comment on. I hear he may appear later in Ironheart’s run, with Episodes 5-6 considered likely. In addition to in-person scenes, rumor is that there have been scans for CGI effects, which would indicate a superhero alter ego for Baron Cohen’s character. He is believed to be playing a comic book villain, probably Mephisto.

We have confirmed that tracking service Nrg is eyeing a 175 million start for Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That total would give it the second-best opening of 2022 after Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which debuted to 187.4M. Last year’s Marvel sequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, owns the biggest domestic opening of the pandemic at 260M, and second best ever in the history of box office.

There are tons of fascinating “what if?” stories around Hollywood. What if Quentin Tarantino had made a “Silver Surfer” film? Or what if Guillermo del Toro had made “Doctor Strange” or the third “Harry Potter” or a multitude of other unrealized projects by the famous director? There’s always at least one of these stories you can’t help but wonder, what if things had gone differently? The latest one involves Tarantino, Laurence Fishburne and the role of Jules Winnfield in “Pulp Fiction.”

Abel Ferrara has always existed on the fringe of filmmaking. The themes he tackles, the controversial content of his films, and his New York City attitude all help in keeping him on those fringes. Even when he attempted to cross over in the early 90’s to bigger-budgeted Hollywood films–with limited success– it wasn’t long until he again embraced the outsider attitude and moved right back into making no-budget films. The Addiction is a case in point. Shot for around $500,000, most of the cast and crew were employed for delayed compensation, a big gamble considering the typical earning potential of an Abel Ferrara film. But one doesn’t work with Ferrara for a big payday. One works with Ferrara because one appreciates pure cinema, the authenticity of Ferrara, and his guerrilla-style filmmaking. After dabbling with the Hollywood elite, The Addiction was a breath of fresh air for Ferrara,...

Watch out – a bloodsucking fiend is stalking the highways and by-ways of lower Manhattan… and she has a PhD! Abel Ferrara’s vampire mini-epic puts Lili Taylor through an ordeal that’s harrowing, transformational and either profound or pretentious depending on how you roll with existential philosophy. We acknowledge that Ferrara is a good judge of actor-flesh: sharing in the theory-speak and blood-soaked grue are Christopher Walken, Annabella Sciorra, Edie Falco, and Kathryn Erbe.

Yet, few professions are so straightforward. Almost disturbing in its simplicity, you punch your opponent until they fall down, whilst they try to do the same to you.
In cinema, the boxer is an ever-present figure, often solitary and driven to succeed by demons from the past. Creed, Ryan Coogler‘s new addition to the Rocky series is out this week in a wide release, and garnering some very positive reviews (including our own). There’s no better time to brush up on your boxing movies, as it’s an enthralling little sub-genre, ripe for explosive violence and drama.

"It's a crime... that I want to feel young?" Ah, mais oui, Gérard Depardieu! We've seen a UK trailer for this previously, but another one should be more than enough to satisfy. IFC Films has debuted the official Us (meaning MPAA-approved) trailer for one of Abel Ferrara's latest films, Welcome to New York, starring Gérard Depardieu, Jacqueline Bisset and Paul Calderon. Depardieu plays a billionaire with ultimate money and power, who is driven by a "frenzied and unbridled sexual hunger". I'm not sure if I'm that into this film's lavishness, but that is quite a way to sell it. The trailer is barely Sfw, but I'm sure the film is not. Here's the official Us trailer for Abel Ferrara's Welcome to New York direct from IFC Films: Welcome to New York is directed by Abel Ferrara (King of New York, Chelsea on the Rocks, 4:44 Last Day...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

Abel Ferrara‘s latest work Welcome to New York is a film so unflinching in its portrait of excess and moral-corruption that it makes The Wolf of Wall Street look like it was produced by Cbeebies.
Devereaux (Gerard Depardieu), one of the world’s most powerful businessmen is filled with a gratuitous sexual hunger – a man so entangled in his lifestyle of power, sex and money that he believes everything is his. This is until Deveraux sexually assaults a hotel maid in New York and finds himself arrested, on the verge of being stripped of this power. Ferrara uses the high-profile case of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as his factual basis for this slow-burning piece filled with excess and debauchery.

"Pulp Fiction" resurrected John Travolta's career, made Uma Thurman a star and established Quentin Taratino as the most daring director in Hollywood.October 14, 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the film's release -- and we've gleaned six surprising facts from the filmmaking from a recent Vanity Fair retrospective.Check out the gallery above to see how the stars have all aged in the past two decades. Plus, find out who was hiding underneath all that leather as The Gimp! Now, onto the fun facts!1. The now infamous Gimp scene was Uma's main hesitation with the film, over the obscenity or drug use. "[Quentin] wasn’t this revered demigod auteur that he has grown into" the actress explained. "And I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it, because I was worried about the Gimp stuff."2. As for the scenes she was actually in, Uma was most nervous about doing the Twist with John.

"Boardwalk Empire" is back for its final season. I interviewed Terence Winter about the decision to end the show (and to move the action forward to 1931), and I have a review of the premiere coming up just as soon as I sail away on a turtle... "They're not so special. All they have is money. Ways to find that, I reckon." -Nucky Winter told me he wanted to bring the story of both Nucky and the series full circle, and "Golden Days for Boys and Girls" begins that process in more ways than one. Not only do we leap forward to 1931 to see Nucky preparing for the potential end of Prohibition (just as the series began in the hours leading up to the implementation of the Volstead Act), but we jump back in time to 1884, to the beginning of Nucky's apprenticeship with the Commodore. Now, the issue with "Boardwalk" has...

The lipstick returns in Monday 's (Nov. 18) episode of "Hostages."
Given that lipsticks have fun names, let's call this one Kiss of Death, since that is its purpose. This is the lipstick that cleverly camouflages the poison intended to kill the president during his rescheduled operation. FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) returns it to Dr. Ellen Sanders (Toni Collette) and orders her to place it in locker 715 on the fourth floor before the hospital goes into lockdown, preparing for the president's operation.
Two important characters are killed off in this episode: The president's Chief of Staff Quentin Creasy (Jeremy Bobb) and Secret Service Agent Stan Hoffman (Paul Calderon). They were on opposite sides of the plot, with the chief of staff being in on the conspiracy and Hoffman digging to find out why there was a mistake with the first scheduled operation on the president and why the operating room nurse supposedly committed suicide.

Now almost two decades old, Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction almost singlehandedly changed the way Hollywood wanted to make movies in the '90s. Now, a comprehensive new book on the film -- Pulp Fiction: The Complete Story of Quentin Tarantino's Masterpiece (by Jason Bailey from Voyageur Press) – reveals some intriguing casting near-miss and what if? details, from the possibilities of Daniel Day-Lewis as Vincent Vega (the role now owned by John Travolta) and Meg Ryan as Mia Wallace (the role now defined by Uma Thurman) to even Ellen DeGeneres starring in a supporting role...

By the end of the eighth episode of "Hostages" Monday (Nov. 11), just what constitutes a "good reason" is anybody's guess.
Are there good reasons why a colonel, the president's chief of staff and the scorned sister of the first lady want the president dead? It's unlikely they share the same motivations, outside of a mad power grab.
Col. Thomas Blair (Brian White) believes that the government should continue to spy on citizens. Since he is in charge of Operation Total Information, he wants it to continue. President Kincaid (James Naughton) wants to stop the spying.
"When the American people find out the extent to which this government has been secretly spying on its own citizens -- surveillance devices in cars, in computers -- they are going to demand my head on a stake," the president says to the colonel and Quentin Creasy (Jeremy Bobb), his chief of staff, who are involved in the assassination plot.

The action continues to hurtle forward in CBS' "Hostages" Monday (Oct. 28) even if the main event -- assassinating the president -- is barely mentioned.
It turns out that living in the Sanders' household, under the point of a gun and with three very edgy kidnappers, is so fraught with danger that even a forcible commitment to an asylum is preferable.
Ellen's (Toni Collette) sister, Lauren (Nina Arianda), shows up unexpectedly. Well, it's not as if too much in the house is going according to some master plan anyway.
Duncan (Dylan McDermott) warns Ellen to get rid of her sister. Though Ellen tries, Lauren has nowhere else to go and barges in. This is, after all, her sister.

I love any movie that opens with its own personalized rap song. This was commonplace during the 1980s and early 90s as soundtrack sales proved to be just as lucrative as the movies themselves. Many films were made greater by their cunning use of personalized rapster tunes - for example Ghostbusters 2, Police Academy 4: Citizens of Patrol, The Addams Family, and Kenneth Branaugh’s Hamlet (I think, but I may be confusing it with Wild, Wild West). And 1985’s Tenement (also known as Game of Survival) is no exception, opening and closing with the not-so renowned hit “Tenement” featuring some wicked beats with a rapper occasionally saying the word “tenement.” The song is surprisingly upbeat and rather perky for the disturbing carnage that is about to unfold. Yet, somehow is it is the perfect opening to this flick.
I’ll also begin by professing my love for Roberta Findlay.

Daniel Day-Lewis as Vincent Vega? Almost two decades after the release of Quentin Tarantino's game-changing Pulp Fiction, it's impossible to imagine anyone else in the role made famous by John Travolta. But in a new Vanity Fair expose on the making of the 1994 Oscar winner, Travolta's career was so "cold" that producer Harvey Weinstein fought it tooth and nail.
Here are five shocking truths about the making of the movie, taken from the March issue of Vanity Fair, on newsstands in New York and L.A. on January 31 and nationally and on the iPad, Nook, and Kindle on February 5.

In the 19 years since "Pulp Fiction" hit theaters, the film that made Quentin Tarantino a superstar has become a bona fide cinematic classic. Hell, it was a classic from the moment it first screened at the Cannes Film Festival. But as a new oral history of the film in Vanity Fair shows, "Pulp Fiction" was almost a very different film.
Forget Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and John Travolta. How about "Pulp Fiction" starring Paul Calderon, Matt Dillon and Daniel Day-Lewis?
Yes, crazy as it sounds, that was almost the cast of "Pulp Fiction," with the most intriguing prospect being the idea of Day-Lewis (who is likely about to win his record two billionth Oscar for "Lincoln") in Travolta's iconic role as Vincent Vega. Day-Lewis, as it turns out, had read the script and desperately wanted the role, but Tarantino was dead set on Travolta, even though Travolta's career was essentially over.

Academy Award nominee and Michael Cera’s stunt-double, Jesse Eisenberg, will be starring in the new indie comedy Why Stop Now, which looks a lot like Little Miss Sunshine, except with even more drugs. Melissa Leo plays Eisenberg’s drug-addict mother, but they won’t let her into rehab because she’s not high enough (which sounds goofy at first blush, but makes a lot of sense, when you think about it). Eisenberg’s gotta get her to hit bottom, so they visit her dealer, as played by Tracy Morgan, and hilarity ensues. Dig:

The "Hugo" star was originally attached to play the role of Scotty Harmony, a role described in the screenplay as an overweight 24-year-old who receives a female slave as a gift from his father (and one severely re-imagined after Tarantino's first choice for the part, Jonah Hill, proved to be unavailable). According to The Playlist, Cohen is unable to play the role due to scheduling conflicts with "The Dictator" press tour (which is proving to be quite the production in and of itself).
Sacha Baron Cohen is the third actor who's had to drop out of "Django" due to scheduling conflicts, following Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Costner. Costner has since been replaced by "Death Proof" star Kurt Russell, but no word yet on who will be filling in for Gordon-Levitt and, now, Cohen.
