Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. Van Helsing (watch it Here) was the culmination of what Stephen Sommers had been working towards with tales of fantasy like The Adventures of Huck Finn...

It has been eight years since Hugh Jackman notoriously hopped his way into Radio City Music Hall to host the 68th Tony Awards and even longer since he won a Tony himself. But at long last, Jackman has returned to Broadway in a revival of the Americana classic “The Music Man” starring Professor Harold Hill. In this mounting, which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Feb. 10, Sutton Foster joins him as Marian Paroo.
This fourth production of the Meredith Willson musical on Broadway is directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, who also helmed the lavish and adored remounting of “Hello, Dolly!” a few years ago. Zaks has assembled an impressive ensemble for his production, including Tony winners Shuler Hensley, Jayne Houdyshell, Jefferson Mays, and Marie Mullen, plus Tony-winning creatives Warren Carlyle, Santo Loquasto, and Brian MacDevitt.

Covid has caused a lot of uncertainty around Broadway. Several shows have had to suspend performances, go on hiatus, or close permanently. And the American Theatre Wing hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet. Though with that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are six productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we see any of them contend at the next Tonys? Below is a look at the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of their authors, casts, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

In a break with Broadway custom of recent decades, producers of The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are not inviting critics to pre-opening night previews.
Instead, critics are being invited to the revival’s Feb. 10 opening night at the Winter Garden Theatre, with reviews embargoed until thereafter. (Deadline received the invitation by email today.)
Typically, critics are invited to at least several pre-opening night previews, with reviews embargoed until opening night. Although the trope of aisle-sitters rushing to file reviews after the opening night curtain falls conjures images of All About Eve-era Broadway, the practice is thought to have generally continued at least into the 1970s, with then-New York Times critic Richard Eder occasionally, perhaps apocryphally, credited with having encouraged the switch to critics’ previews to allow reviewers more time to consider and craft their reactions.

Kate Horton, who previously ran the Royal Court Theatre in London and has held executive roles also at the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre, will take over for Scott Rudin as executive producer of The Music Man, the upcoming Broadway revival starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.

Other formerly Rudin-produced shows, including The Lehman Trilogy, The Book of Mormon and To Kill a Mockingbird, have announced their Rudin-less returns. West Side Story has not yet set a return date.

How does a theater nerd properly express their excitement over the final day of Donald Trump’s presidency? With a parody of the iconic ensemble performance “One Day More” from the Broadway musical “Les Misérables.” And that’s exactly what James Corden did on Tuesday’s “The Late Late Show,” with an assist from Broadway icons Joshua Grosso, Jillian Butler, Emily Bautista, Kyle Scatliffe, Shuler Hensley, Patti LuPone and Matt Lucas.
Corden opened the bit, walking into his CBS late-night show’s studio and taking on Jean Valjean’s role in the parody: “One day more. The final day of Trump as president. The White House has a brand new resident. It’s been four years of endless crimes, but now he’s finally out of time. One day more.”
Then he is joined by Grosso (doing a play on Marius): “What if he just doesn’t leave. How...

In the visual, Corden heads into work, happy to have his “last day of Trump jokes, just one more day. One day more.” But as he walks into the office, a TV broadcasts Trump talking about false claims of a stolen election, which causes...

James Corden celebrated Trump’s last day in office with a parody of “Les Misérables” number “One Day More,” featuring a slew of Broadway stars.
In the video, which aired during Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Late Show,” Corden arrives at work in a good mood due to President-elect Joe Biden’s impending inauguration. After seeing Trump appear on a TV screen, Corden breaks out into song: “One day more/ The final day of Trump as President/ The White House has a brand new resident/ It’s been four years of endless crimes/ But now he’s finally out of time.”
As the song escalates, past and present cast members of “Les Misérables” join the fray, including Patti LuPone, Matt Lucas, Joshua Grosso, Jillian Butler, Emily Bautista, Kyle Scatliffe and Shuler Hensley.

Update, with Music Man confirmation Producers Scott Rudin, Barry Diller and David Geffen confirmed today that The Music Man Broadway revival starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster has been postponed until next spring, making the musical the second Broadway postponement announced today.
“We’re obviously profoundly disappointed to be unable to start rehearsals for The Music Man as scheduled,” said Rudin in a statement. “But safety is safety, and it has to take precedence over every other consideration – for both our audience and for our company. Despite the postponement, we are sticking together as a company, and we are grateful to be able to do so. And so we look forward arriving at The Winter Garden – with a beautiful, heartening Music Man in tow – at the beginning of April, and to being just one part of what we expect will once again be a vibrant and exciting Broadway.”

Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub’s musicalized “Twelfth Night” is the kind of outdoor summer theater that transcends bad weather. Even if the skies crackle with lightning and showers soak you in your seat (as happened to this critic), you’ll still leave Central Park’s Delacorte Theater beaming. The co-creators take Shakespeare’s themes and wrap them in an ebullient package, making sure everything about this production — from the inclusive casting to the use of American Sign Language to the invitation to the audience to come mingle with the cast on stage at the start — says “welcome.” With a score of catchy tunes and ardent performances, it’s a happy marriage of a classic play with a contemporary execution.

There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.

An ecstatic Hugh Jackman enjoyed a long overdue reunion with Maureen Lipman in London last night (July 7), 15 years after the pair originally shared the stage in the capital.
Jackman, currently sporting a shaved head, a black beard and moustache for his upcoming role of Blackbeard in Pan, was supporting former co-star Lipman at the press night for her new play Daytona at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
The play is set in New York in 1986, and follows bickering, ballroom-dancing couple Elli (Lipman) and Joe (played by Harry Shearer - arguably best known for providing the voice for the many different characters in The Simpsons) whose lives change upon the re-emergence of long-lost brother Billy.
The pair looked thrilled to see each other again and hugged and laughed together as they posed backstage. Jackman later took to Twitter and enthused: "Just saw my great friend, the brilliant actor, Maureen Lipman in Daytona.

As a fan of Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas thrillers, I was tremendously excited when The Mummy director Stephen Sommers latched onto the story and took steps to turn it into a major film franchise. My anticipation only grew when Anton Yelchin, previously the star of the horrifically underrated Fright Night remake, was cast in the lead role. Though I never would have pegged Yelchin for the part, I honestly couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role once his name came up. Then, just as fans were preparing to mark their calendars, something odd happened, and not in a punny way. Legal disputes killed the film’s marketing campaign and left it lying dormant on Sommers’ shelf, for months on end. Earlier this year, it did see a theatrical run, albeit a shockingly brief one, and I regrettably missed it then. Luckily, with Odd Thomas now hitting Blu-Ray, I...
