As his dazzling debut, Shallow Grave, gets a 30th anniversary rerelease, here’s to an extraordinary career that ranges from Trainspotting to Slumdog Millionaire and that unforgettable London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony
Lancashire-born film-maker Danny Boyle holds a special place in the nation’s heart, having been responsible for not one but three defining moments in our recent pop-culture history. In 1996, his daringly inventive adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting changed the face of young British cinema, with star-making performances from the likes of Ewan McGregor, Kelly Macdonald and Robert Carlyle, and a magpie soundtrack that out-hipped Pulp Fiction. I was co-hosting Radio 1’s film programme when Trainspotting hit UK cinemas, and Mary Anne Hobbs and I immediately ditched our opening station jingles in favour of the thumping drum intro to Lust for Life, which remained the show’s theme tune in perpetuity.

Boardwalk Empire is one of the most important shows of the first half of the 2010s, unfairly forgotten by both critics and viewers by the end of the decade.
It would be hard to call Boardwalk Empire underrated; it was once adored and appreciated. Big studios just don't do shows like this anymore: historical dramas are now relegated to the miniseries format.
In an era of fantasy and endless nostalgia for the eighties and nineties, the multi-season historical drama looks like both a unique achievement and an echo of the past.
Boardwalk Empire Had the Perfect Cast And Crew
Boardwalk Empire in the early 2010s could only be released on HBO. Only the network that changed everyone's attitude toward television in the 2000s could invite the most important director of our time and so many talented actors for its new project.
The executive producer of Boardwalk Empire was Martin Scorsese himself.

Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away.
In 2022, Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe sued Universal Pictures after they rented the 2019 movie “Yesterday” on Amazon Prime Video and subsequently felt they had been bamboozled by the trailer. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, is a zany musical fantasy in which Himesh Patel, a struggling musician, is bonked on the head and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles Never Happened. As such, he starts playing their songs as if they are his own and the movie follows the expected Preston Sturges-like tropes you might expect.
The trailer for the movie featured quite a few glimpses of the alluring Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, later Oscar-nominated for her leading turn in “Blonde,” who ended up not being in the movie at all. An early cut included her character, but that storyline was shaved down after the movie tested poorly.

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Michael Keaton is back, releasing the trailer for Knox Goes Away, the story of a principled hit man.
Saban Films has set the U.S. release date for Knox Goes Away, the thriller marking Michael Keaton’s second feature behind the camera, in which he also stars opposite Al Pacino, James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, and more. Pic will bow exclusively in theaters nationwide on March 15, having launched out of last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Scripted by Gregory Poirier (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Knox Goes Away has Keaton playing John Knox, a hit man attempting to make amends before his recently discovered dementia takes over. Aided by a trusted friend (Pacino) with his own shady past, Knox races against the police — and his own rapidly deteriorating mind — to save his estranged son (Marsden) from a vengeance-fueled mistake and “cash out” before it’s too late.

Department Q, the popular Danish crime novel, has seen a film series adaptation since 2013’s Danish film, Department Q: The Keeper of Lost Causes. It would then be followed by 2014’s Department Q: The Absent One. Then, that installment would be followed by 2016’s Department Q: A Conspiracy of Faith. Those would then proceed with 2018’s Journal 64, 2021’s The Macro Effect and the upcoming Boundless. Additionally, Netflix will be producing a series based on the crime novels.
Deadline has just unveiled the cast for the upcoming Department Q Netflix show. The series, which is based on author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s popular works, is currently filming in Scotland. Matthew Goode, who is known for Antony Armstrong Jones in season two of Left Bank’s regal drama The Crown, has been cast as Dci Carl Morck, along with Chloe Pirrie, who you may know from The Queen’s Gambit, plays ruthless and ambitious prosecutor Merrit Lingard.

Of the many terribly interesting things touched on in Danny Boyle’s smart and skillful adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s 1993 debut novel, Trainspotting, it’s most tempting to contemplate facets that are only mildly developed. There is, for instance, the pointed, oddly chilling, and deeply funny monologue that Renton (Ewan McGregor), the closest thing that the audience is given to a hero here, delivers in opposition to his straight-arrow friend’s buoyant Scottish nationalism. As Renton barks at Tommy (Kevin McKidd), personal despondency is connected directly to lack of a unique cultural identity, which Renton is quick to see as a reflection of Scotland’s muddled ties to the United Kingdom.
The whole spiel doesn’t quite account for the astounding amount of heroin that Renton and his cronies pump into their corroded veins, attained through various burglaries and scams, but coupled with the dour, decrepit environs of Glasgow and...

[This story contains spoilers from Fargo’s season five finale, “Bisquik.”]
For Fargo season five star Juno Temple, nothing was going to get in the way of Dorothy “Dot” Lyon’s mostly happy ending.
When the dust settled on Noah Hawley’s tremendous fifth season of Fargo, Dot finally overcame her wickedly abusive ex-husband Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm), his hired gun who happened to be a 500-year-old sin-eater named Ole Munch (Sam Spruell) and her mistrustful mother-in-law, Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Dot thought her quarrel with Munch was settled when he saved her and freed her at Roy’s ranch so she could put a stop to the latter’s vicious cycle of abuse once and for all, but a year after Roy ended up in handcuffs, Dot and her daughter Scotty (Sienna King) arrived home to see Munch sitting in their living room with their respective, unsuspecting husband and father, Wayne (David Rysdahl...

[This story contains major spoilers from the season five finale of Fargo.]
Antecedently on Fargo season five, Juno Temple’s Dorothy Lyon battled against a centuries-old sin eater named Ole Munch (Sam Spruell), reckoned with her violent ex-husband and current lawman Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm), all while negotiating family politics with her mother-in-law Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and receiving assistance from good souls like deputy Indira Olmstead (Richa Moorjani) and state trooper Witt Farr (Lamorne Morris).
Now, all of those characters are done struggling, at least on screen, and one of them is done struggling forever, thanks to a blade in the dark. As always, Fargo concludes with Coenesque violence, but also, with Coenesque questions — this time, the question being: What do we do with debt? Do we owe, or do we forgive?
The question comes to a head in the final sequence of the finale, in which Dot comes home with daughter Scotty (Sienna King), only to find the sin-eating...

When Peter Capaldi flickers into view on the Zoom call, I half expect him to tell me to “F** Off!”
For TV viewers of a certain age, the 65-year-old Scottish actor will forever be Malcolm Tucker, the supremely sweary spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s pre-Veep Brit political satire The Thick of It.
“It’s The Thick of It and Doctor Who,” says a charming (and clean-mouthed) Capaldi, about the roles he’s most recognized for (he played the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the cult sci-fi series from 2013 to 2017). “Surprisingly, The Thick of It is still incredibly popular [the series wrapped in 2012]. People, generally very cool, smart young people, recognize me from that a lot. They generally just ask me to swear at them.”
Of course, there’s a lot more to Capaldi than Tucker and the Doctor. His scores of film and TV appearances include playing alongside Burt Lancaster in Bill Forsyth’s 1983 classic Local Hero,...

Jules director Marc Turtletaub with Anne-Katrin Titze on Ben Kingsley: “This is not a way we’ve ever seen Sir Ben before.”
Marc Turtletaub’s otherworldly Jules, written by Gavin Steckler, shot by Christopher Norr and scored by Volker Bertelmann (Oscar for Best Original Score of Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front), stars Ben Kingsley with Harriet Sansom Harris, Jane Curtin, Zoë Winters, and Jade Quon as the title character. There’s probably a clever German word invented to describe the increasingly common and frustrating act of spending an entire evening indecisively flicking through Netflix arguing about what to watch before just giving up and going to bed. The streaming giant has over 7,000 titles on its UK version alone, so you can be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all, and its recent tendency to cancel beloved Netflix Originals – some would say too soon – can leave you wondering where best to commit your time.

During the Halloween season last year, it was announced that Damian Lewis, whose credits include Billions, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Homeland, and Dreamcatcher, will be playing two roles in the supernatural black comedy The Radleys. Released in the United Kingdom in 1995, and later released to America in 1996, the movie would also depict heroin addicts in Edinburgh, Scotland as they deal with life, drugs and their consequences as well as their various exploits. Technology is developing at such a rapid pace. Inventions that were merely concepts in science fiction a few decades ago are now accessible to the general public. In some cases, maybe it was for the best that these innovations remained fictional. Black Mirror explores the frightening possibilities of what might happen if technology is regarded above human life.

Iconic director Martin Scorsese has made quite a name for himself through directing a number of successful films and TV shows. Scorsese rose to fame in the 1970s, specifically with his film Mean Streets (1973), which set the stage for the rest of his directing style and for him to find success in filming movies with different levels of drama.
A Scorsese-directed film was almost a guaranteed hit, and it explains why plenty of production companies and screen writers sought him out. But back in 2012, Scorsese found himself in the midst of a lawsuit after a company alleged that he’d made an agreement with them to direct their film Silence. However, once he opted to start directing The Wolf of Wall Street instead, a lawsuit ensued.

Boardwalk Empire might have low key been one of HBO’s greatest shows of all time. Of course, other iconic series such as The Sopranos and The Wire will go down in history as the absolute best, but those who love crime dramas — and anything Martin Scorsese touches — will likely agree that Boardwalk Empire is up there with the best of them.
The show starred James Buscemi and Kelly MacDonald, among others, and its premise navigated the Prohibition Era (and the secret underworld of illegal alcohol) in Atlantic City. Produced by Martin Scorsese, the cast and crew alone made the show almost destined to be a hit. But after season one, Kelly MacDonald, who played Margaret Schroeder, went so far as say that working with Scorsese “ruins you.”

Carol Morley’s warm and sympathetic film imagines the artist, whose mental illness curtailed her ambitions, on a tragicomic road trip to exhibit her work
With natural sympathy and warmth, film-maker Carol Morley has created this likable, generous, imaginative response to the work of the neglected English artist Audrey Amiss, played here with beady-eyed gusto by Monica Dolan. And if the movie finally has a bit of a soft centre, then this is partly because of Morley’s refusal to fetishise the supposedly transfigurative pain of mental illness.
Sunderland-born Amiss trained as a painter at the Royal Academy in the 1950s, had a breakdown and was in and out of institutions for the rest of her life, finally taking a secretarial job but restlessly creating unsold and unseen art, in the form of raw impressionistic sketches of her daily existence and an autofictional collage-journal of found objects – packaging, flyers, leaflets...

“I used to be in the kitchen sink school of realism but now I’m avant-garde and misunderstood,” says Audrey (Monica Dolan), hard at work in a small flat in which every surface is covered with her creations. Where plenty of successful artists talk volubly about their struggles with mental illness, she’s the real thing. What we see of her works may seem crude, but there’s no doubt that she’s put her heart and soul into them, or that they give expression to what has been a difficult life.
Showing appreciation gets care worker Sandra (Kelly Macdonald) no reward. Living with paranoid schizophrenia, Audrey sometimes gets confused about people’s identities, and the easiest way for her to be confident that Sandra is who she claims to be is to hear her criticise or complain. The result is a relationship built around sniping and passive aggression which wears Sandra out.

Daniel Craig first started performing when he was a child, entertaining barflies at the pub his parents ran. He'd perform impersonations of celebrities he'd seen on television. "I'd get money," Craig told GQ of his early acting efforts. "I suppose I've been making a living out of this from a very early age." While studying at the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, Craig made his professional acting debut at 16 in a Shakespeare production, quickly establishing himself as one of Britain's finest young actors. Craig was 32 when he was cast as James Bond in 2006's "Casino Royale" -- a role that would forever change his life. He played 007 in four more films, including his 2021 Bond swan song, "No Time To Die."
There's no argument that Bond has been Craig's signature role — not surprising since he holds the record as the longest-running 007, portraying him for 15 years. But those spy films,...

FX has decided to ignore the advice of its own series title and let go of the TV adaptation of "Never Let Me Go" before the show could ever air or even go into production. We first reported last May that the network was developing a new adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro's novel for television, with director Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo") having previously adapted the book into a 2010 film starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield. Originally meant to stream on Hulu, the "Never Let Me Go" series received the official green light from FX last October, but now, it is no longer happening, according to Variety.
Viola Prettejohn ("The Nevers") was set to star in "Never Let Me Go" as Thora, described in the series logline as "a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society.

By the time the second season of HBO's Prohibition crime series "Boardwalk Empire" rolled around, its hero was on the outs, deeply in need of muscle as his various criminal enterprises caught up with him.
In a show already teeming with some of the finest character actors around, anybody who arrived to lend support to protagonist Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) would need to make an immediate impression on the audience. The actor would need to compete with known greats like Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael K. Williams, besides being a meaningful foil for Buscemi. Luckily for the show, this actor did.
He might not have had the name recognition of the rest of the show's cast, but Charlie Cox proved a potent screen presence on a show that was drowning in it. As the Irish mercenary Owen Sleater, he gave the show a light sense of charm that could distract from...

There are such a fine myriad of film festivals around the world, with all major cities spotlighting domestic talent, and showcasing the latest films from around the world to local audiences and visiting guests. While a small collective, namely Berlin, Cannes & Venice stand out on the European festival calendar, there’s another contender on the block; a simply brilliant celebration of cinema, with a mighty fine programme, and it takes place in the capital city of Estonia.
The Tallinn Black Nights Festival just closed its doors on the 26th edition of this annual, winter event, and we here at HeyUGuys were fortunate enough to have been invited along. Named ‘Black Nights’, we presume, because it gets dark every day around mid-afternoon, it’s a bitterly cold fortnight, where naturally you find yourselves gravitating towards the warm, cosiness of a cinema complex – and when doing so, there sure was a lot to indulge in.

In the year 2020, lockdown provided a time we all never thought we’d have – and banked on never having – to discover hidden gems on our ever-present streaming services. And in a way, what makes these services so special, is the hopeful promise to find something we’d otherwise never encounter, if only we had the time to really commit.
When you’ve heard the phrase, “hidden gem” as many times as rabid Spurs fan, showrunner, and prolific writer, Joe Barton has, it might just force you to neck your favorite cough syrup just to feel something. Giri/Haji was a BBC/Netflix and English/Japanese crime procedural starring Kelly Macdonald and Takerhiro Hira, it’s the hidden gem in question here. It introduced me to Joe, who’s since co-written alien-adjacent drama Encounter for Amazon Prime Video, YA...

Even the greatest filmmakers only get to have their names attached to something that will go down as one of the greatest movies of all time once, if they're very lucky. Only guys like Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock - the rarest of the rare - get to claim a few. For directors Joel and Ethan Coen, aka the Coen brothers, their moment came in 2007 with "No Country for Old Men" which, quite arguably, remains their best film to date in the eyes of the masses.
As the directors behind beloved classics such as "Fargo" and "The Big Lebowski," the duo had already put their stamp on cinema in a pretty significant way. But something very special happened when they teamed up...
