The biopic “Oppenheimer” was meant to take the award season by storm ever since its release. With a powerhouse cast and a director known for meticulous attention to detail, the film seemed destined for critical acclaim.
A still from Oppenheimer (2023)
However, a recent observation by industry expert Amy Nicholson has thrown a wrench into “Oppenheimer’s” awards trajectory. Known for catching historical goofs and picking movies apart, she spotted a small detail that feels illegal for a Christopher Nolan movie. This could either just be a harmless oversight or maybe a potentially award-sinking misstep.

The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

Christopher Nolan’s films are always immersive cinematic experiences, but “Oppenheimer” is an extraordinary piece of work even by the standards of the director who made “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” and “Interstellar.” From its opening moments, the movie hardwires the audience’s synapses to the emotional experiences of its two lead characters, physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his nemesis, Lewis Strauss, as Nolan orchestrates every element of the frame to provide precise, expressive visual corollaries for the internal journeys of his protagonists. What really takes “Oppenheimer” to the next level, however, is its sonic complexity; with this film, Nolan’s longtime sound designer and supervising sound editor Richard King (in collaboration with an Oscar-nominated sound team comprised of production sound mixer Willie Burton and re-recording mixers Gary A. Rizzo and Kevin O’Connell) has created a mix in which every layer is both thematically motivated and viscerally charged — it’s a...

Oscar Droughts: How Long Will Bradley Cooper and Diane Warren Have to Wait for Their Academy Awards?
“Always a bridesmaid, never the bride” certainly applies to the plight of 19 of this year’s longest-suffering Academy Award nominees. Spanning all 23 categories, these actors, filmmakers and artisans — including actor Annette Bening, filmmaker Wes Anderson and costume designer Jacqueline West — share a peculiar bond. Collectively, they have racked up an impressive 107 Oscar nominations over the years without once stepping onto the Dolby Theatre stage to deliver an acceptance speech. By comparison, living titans Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep have together garnered 47 bids and taken home 13 trophies.
The 96th ceremony may not change the narrative for many of these perennial favorites. Bening, on her fifth nod for “Nyad,” and Mark Ruffalo, rocking out with his fourth mention for “Poor Things,” find themselves in tight races, with Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) way ahead of them. Furthermore, Bening and Ruffalo’s...

Snoop, the border collie featured in best picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall, and figurines of monsters from Godzilla: Minus One, a nominee for best visual effects, competed for attention with A-listers including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper and Robert Downey Jr. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon.
Per tradition, the gathering of nominees from across the 23 Oscar categories — along with their plus ones, members of the Academy’s board of governors and a handful of journalists also in the room — took place in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton. Unlike Oscar night itself, nominees tend to feel less nervous at the luncheon, at which they are deliberately seated with nominees from other categories and films, and from which everyone leaves a winner. Oppenheimer was one of the surprising success stories of the summer box office, and now Christopher Nolan’s World War II-era biopic has landed 13 Oscar nominations, more than any other film this year.
Notably, it marks Nolan’s first time landing both directing and writing nominations for one of his films, and it is also Nolan’s most nominated film ever. (2008’s The Dark Knight, 2010’s Inception and 2017’s Dunkirk each received eight.)
Oppenheimer is nominated for best picture (for producers Nolan, Emma Thomas and Charles Roven), while Nolan is in contention for the adapted screenplay. (He adapted the script from the 2005 J. Robert Oppenheimer biography American Prometheus, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.)
The film also landed noms for actor (Cillian Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), supporting actress (Emily Blunt), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), costume design (Ellen Mirojnick), makeup and hairstyling (Luisa Abel), original score (Ludwig Göransson...

Oscar-winning sound designer/supervising sound editor Richard King has two frontrunners this season with Christopher Nolan’s explosive “Oppenheimer” and Bradley Cooper’s musical “Maestro.” While each offers very different soundscapes, they capture the essence of these two 20th-century giants of quantum physics and music.
For the sound design of the biopic thriller about the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), King, Oscar-winning music and sound effects mixer Kevin O’Connell (“Hacksaw Ridge”), and dialogue mixer Gary Rizzo got to create the horrifying sound of the Trinity test explosion along with the sounds of the subatomic world of particles and waves that stirred Oppenheimer’s troubled mind.
For the sound design of the complicated love story between legendary conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan), King worked with the Oscar-nominated team from the director’s “A Star Is Born”: production sound mixer Steve Morrow,...

“Oppenheimer” has burst into the Oscar race.
With the earnest and urgent cultural fabric of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the philosophical measure of “The Tree of Life,” writer, director and producer Christopher Nolan’s chronicle of the creation of the most destructive weapon ever used stands as the most ambitious and vital piece of filmmaking of his career. Adapted from the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Oppenheimer” tells the complicated and morally fraught story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the effort to develop the atomic bomb.
Nolan and his stellar ensemble of actors have amassed 27 Oscar nominations collectively throughout their careers. One of those who surprisingly hasn’t nabbed one is Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who plays the titular scientist. With dry wit and womanizing charm that effectively makes him the scientific version of Michael Fassbender in “Shame,” Murphy is an...

For the sound team behind Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s “The Woman King” — including Oscar-nominated re-recording mixer Tony Lamberti and supervising sound editor Becky Sullivan, as well as production sound mixer Derek Mansvelt — one of the biggest challenges was recreating the time and place in which the film is set. This group, which also included dialogue and music re-recording mixer Kevin O’Connell, was tasked with turning modern-day South Africa, which is where filming for the historical epic took place in late 2021 and early 2022, into 1820s Kingdom of Dahomey.
“Our set there, in modern day, was a city. And even though [the cast and crew] are on the set of the kingdom, in my dialogue tracks… I’m hearing traffic, helicopters, sirens; [when] we go to different locations, I’m hearing — as Derek [Mansvelt] will always point out — the smoke machines, the compressors, fans, a lot of bugs, cicadas, a lot of things that were just on the production tracks,...

Invitation to that most exclusive of groups, the Oscar winners club, must be gratifying to those who have come up short in the past.
Some have had to put a brave face before the cameras on double-digit occasions. Sound mixer Kevin O’Connell, for instance, endured 20 unsuccessful nominations before triumphing as part of the team on 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge.” Randy Newman came up short 15 times before winning for song in 2002 (and copping the same award eight years later).
Crack cinematographer Roger Deakins won his first Oscar only last year on his 14th nomination, “Blade Runner 2049.” Now he’s up again for his work on “1917,” while serving as visual consultant on animated feature nominee “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.”
The current roster features multiple past nominees who have yet to bring home the bacon. For these perennial bridesmaids — some of whom are category front-runners — a trip to the altar on Feb.

Tim here. Somewhat overlooked in all the furor over the rightfully furor-inducing parts of the Oscars on Sunday, a little bit of history was quietly made.
When the four-member team from Hacksaw Ridge took to the stage of the Kodak Theater to accept the award for Best Sound Mixing, the worst losing drought in the history of the Academy Awards ended. Kevin O'Connell received his first nomination in that category in 1983, for the subdued domestic drama Terms of Endearment, which perhaps unsurprisingly lost to The Right Stuff. 33 years and 21 nominations later, in a career including 209 films to his credit as a mixer, he finally picked up his very first statue on Sunday. You may remember him as the guy who thanked his late mom for helping him to get his first job in the industry, and who asked as thanks only that he'd mention her one day as he accepted an Oscar.

During the In Memoriam section, a photo of Australian producer Jan Chapman (Love Serenade, Lantana, The Babadook) was shown next to the name of late costume designer Janet Patterson, with whom Chapman worked on several Jane Campion films including The Piano, Bright Star and Holy Smoke..
Patterson died in October last year. Her final film was Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd, starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts..
.I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson," the still-very-much-breathing Chapman told Variety..
"I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered.

Congratulations to all the winners at the 89th Academy Awards! La La Land was the most-honored of the night, as expected, with six wins. But there were definitely some surprises. Like La La Land not winning even more. And the shocker that it was wrongly announced as Best Picture. Instead it was Moonlight that won the top award. There were also many records broken. Damien Chazelle is now the youngest winner of the Best Directing Oscar, at age 32. O.J.: Made in America became the longest movie to win an Oscar at 467 minutes. Mahershala Ali is the first Muslim to win an acting Oscar. Soundman Kevin O'Connell finally won with his 21st nomination. But how about that Moonlight ending? And here are all the winners: Best...

Kevin O'Connell, 21 nominations to date21 days until Oscar! Since 21 is the magic number of the day we must note that two contenders this year, Andy Nelson and Kevin O'Connell, competing against each other in Sound Mixing, are both on their 21st nomination. (Take that Meryl with your 20!) Nelson, who seems likely to win for La La Land has already won two Oscars for Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Les Misérables (2012). O'Connell is still waiting for that elusive win. He must be frustrated and his tux must be well worn by now.

We're about one month away from the announcement of this year's Honorary Oscar recipients. They're usuallly announced at the end of August for a November Governor's Awards ceremony. This year's ceremony will be on November 12th. Last year rumors circled that it was Doris Day's turn but that didn't turn out to be accurate. For the past two years, The Film Experience has tried to make up for the dearth of movie site reporting about the Oscar Honorary careers (beyond the sharing of press releases / YouTube videos of their speeches) with mini-retrospectives so we're always hoping they'll choose well to give us wonderful careers to discuss right here.
Let's reprint a list of worthies we shared a year or so ago, with a few adjustments, in case any of the elites in the Academy are undecided about who to put forth or get behind for these coveted honors.

At the Independent Spirit Awards Saturday afternoon, John Cassavetes Award winner (and former In Contention contributor) Chad Hartigan told me something I didn't know: He wouldn't have made "This is Martin Bonner" if it weren't for Steve McQueen's "Hunger." He copped a few of the film's lines in his film, some of the camerawork, too. He was inspired, he said, by a filmmaker who could pull something that powerful off with such modest means, both financially and artistically. That, to me, is McQueen's legend. That, to me, is the kind of thing that will endure. These nickel-plated notions of "importance" that people throw around during the Oscar season, straining to associate some arbitrary level meaning to the thing, they can frankly diminish the very fine achievement on display. "I fear all the talk about the historical importance of '12 Years a Slave' almost completely obscures its extraordinary artistic merit,...

Unless you're prediction-loving, number-crunching wizard Nate Silver, you probably find statistics pretty boring. But stats concerning the Academy Awards have always been fascinating, mostly because the Oscars are just plain weird, and riddled with anomalies.
The ceremony got its start in the late 1920s, when movies were just making their transition into sound, and early nominees and categories reflected the sheer chaos of those halcyon days of what would eventually become Hollywood's golden age. (Though, of course, any film aficionado worth his/her salt would have a strong opinion about the exact dates that that age entailed.)
As the Oscars tradition continued, the awards became a bit more traditional themselves, settling into a predictable pattern of narratives that have stayed relatively consistent to this day. But there are always idiosyncrasies hiding in the woodwork, and the Academy Awards have them in spades. Here, we've collected some of the most distinctive...

Greg P. Russell, a veteran sound mixer and 16-time Oscar nominee, lost his 16th Best Sound Mixing award during the 85th annual Academy Awards on Sunday. Russell, 0-for-16 at the Oscars in his career, was nominated with Scott Millan and Stuart Wilson for mixing "Skyfall."
"Les Miserables" won Best Sound Mixing at the 2013 Oscars.
The Oscars hand out two separate awards for sound work on feature films: Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing. The Best Sound Mixing award "recognizes the finest or most euphonic sound mixing or recording, and is generally awarded to the production sound mixers and re-recording mixers of the winning film."
Russell had been nominated 15 times before the 2013 Oscars. His first nod came in 1990 for the film "Black Rain." Russell was also singled out for "The Rock," "Con Air," "The Mask of Zorro," "Armageddon," "The Patriot," "Pearl Harbor," "Spider-Man," "Spider-Man 2," "Memoirs of a Geisha," "Apocalypto,...

The green light for a 2011 NFL season means that it's once again safe to speculate about the professional future of twice-retired quarterback Brett Favre.
After comments from NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt ignited rumors that Favre's Jan. 17 retirement would not stick, there's now talk that he may head to the Miami Dolphins.
A Miami Herald reporter, with an apparently vested interest in the possibility, caught up with Favre near his Mississippi home, TMZ-style.
"I haven't heard anything, and I don't have any interest," Favre said of the Dolphins rumors, before issuing a definitive "No."
And it appears that he was speaking the truth. The Dolphins signed veteran quarterback Kevin O'Connell on Aug. 5.

"It Started Out as a joke," says chef Kevin O'Connell of the $175 burger he serves at New York's Wall Street Burger Shoppe, a retro diner better known for $5 sandwiches than gourmet offerings. Created purely in an attempt to one-up the $150 double-truffle patty served at Daniel Boulud's db Bistro Moderne, O'Connell's burger--the Richard Nouveau--boasts 10 ounces of Kobe beef, foie gras, exotic mushrooms, cave-aged Gruyère, and fresh truffles packed in a brioche bun. O'Connell added one more exorbitant topping: gold. "It needed an extra kick," he says of the decision to mix gold flakes with his truffle mayonnaise. Additional gold is sprinkled atop the burger, serving up a total 750 milligrams of the precious metal with each of the two Richard Nouveaus ordered a week. Here's to deep pockets--and full stomachs. burgershoppenyc.com
