No one needs to tell Abby Elliott that she’s hit the jackpot in getting to portray Natalie Berzatto, better known as Sugar – the big sister of restaurant boss Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) – on the multiple Emmy-winning FX hit “The Bear.” “I mean, it’s a dream job and everyone is so fantastic,” Elliott says. “All of the actors are just incredible, and to be able to work alongside them and with them, it’s just the best…I feel so challenged creatively in this environment. This just feels like what I want to be doing. I really love being able to get to do this work.” She’s also grateful and a bit blown away by the impact the show is having on its audience, who can’t wait for the series to drop its third season June 27 on Hulu. “I get people coming up to me saying, ‘I...

Tom Bower, the veteran character actor best known for prominent turns on The Waltons and in Die Hard 2, has died. A family member confirmed the news to Deadline’s sister publication The Hollywood Reporter. He was 86.
Bower never had what one might call a “breakout” part, but he was an actor one recognized from, well, everywhere. His more than 180 screen credits include appearances on The Rockford Files, Lou Grant, Quincy M.E., Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Law & Order and many other TV staples of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s.
And he kept on working. In the past 15 years, Bower was on Ray Donovan, Bosch, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Office and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He also played the father of Bob Odenkirk’s character on Lucky Hank and had a part in Vince Gilligan’s El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie.

“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

Belt-tightening and cost-cutting continues across Hollywood as the Peak TV era has come to a close, and another legacy TV brand is being shuttered as a result.
Sony Television is shutting down its TriStar Television banner, which recently has been responsible for series like “Lucky Hank” (AMC), “The Afterparty” (Apple TV+), “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” (Showtime), “The Last Tycoon” (Amazon), and “Good Girls Revolt” (Amazon). In its heyday, TriStar TV produced and distributed “The Nanny,” “Mad About You,” and many more series.
A source says the decision is part of a larger shift around Sony Pictures Television’s boutique labels, not unlike the shuttering of the Gemstone brand several years ago, and that the hope is to weave all of TriStar’s values and goals into the bigger studio.
As THR first reported, TriStar TV’s active productions will be absorbed into the larger Sony Television operation,...

FX on Hulu’s The Bear will dish up an all-new season to kick off summer. Season 2 already elevated the show with its numerous guest stars as well as the transition of the family sandwich shop into a fine dining establishment. Season 1 swept the first of two Emmys ceremonies this year, with the second hoping to follow in those footsteps.
After Season 1 raked in its 10 Emmys at the 75th ceremony, the cast and crew had various responses to the comedy genre label. Since the show’s launch, stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach have all been cast in other high profile projects like The Iron Claw for White, The Fantastic Four for Moss-Bachrach and Luca Guadagnino’s next film, The Hunt, for Edebiri.
Fans of the intense kitchen-set series may anticipate new faces and poignant needle drops like Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” for Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Richie.

Carmy and company are back in the first trailer for “The Bear” Season 3. (Apparently he didn’t freeze to death in that freezer!)
As the prodigy chef, played by Jeremy Allen White, opens the new restaurant alongside Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), they find themselves once again sparring. In one scene, Carmy yells, “No surprise!” after Richie brings a piñata into the kitchen. Richie responds: “Yes, surprise!”
In a shorter teaser released five days earlier, Sydney tells Carmy and Richie: “This is a dysfunctional kitchen!,” to which they respond in unison: “Show me a functional one!”
All episodes of award-winning FX dramedy are set to release on June 27 and will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. (and Disney+ internationally).

The advent of streaming television a little over a decade ago changed TV forever. One of those was the idea of releasing entire television seasons simultaneously.
Traditionally, on network television, TV series have been released one episode a week throughout their season.
HBO and other premium cable networks have also released one episode a week, although the seasons are usually shorter.
However, when Netflix debuted its first significant prestige series, House of Cards, in 2013, it released every episode simultaneously.
For several years after that, Netflix released nearly all of its shows that way.
As other streaming services rose to compete with Netflix, they used different models.
Max, for instance, has retained HBO's traditional model of usually one episode per week.
Ironically, during this era, whole seasons of The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and other shows were released on DVD at once, likely encouraging the binge-watching habit.

With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Daniel Destin Cretton no longer attached to Avengers 5, he's been able to focus on Disney+'s upcoming Wonder Man series.
While the show has never been "officially" announced by Marvel Studios, we have a new update from Variety. In a piece addressing the decision to bring back the "Marvel Television" label to better differentiate big and small screen stories, the trade confirms that Wonder Man will fall under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner Echo debuted with in January.
That's meant for one-off, character-driven TV shows which can serve as standalone projects with fewer connections to the wider MCU. However, with Echo, that decision seems to have been made relatively last-minute seeing as it set the stage for Daredevil: Born Again.

Oh, Canada debuting this week on the Croisette is high time to see lesser-seen Schrader on the Criterion Channel, who’ll debut an 11-title series including the likes of Touch, The Canyons, and Patty Hearst, while Old Boyfriends (written with his brother Leonard) and his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” are also programmed. Bradley Cooper, who has 12 Oscar nominations, might soon add his first Primetime Emmy nod to his resume for playing himself on ABC‘s “Abbott Elementary.” ABC and awards strategists confirm to Variety that the studio has submitted the actor for guest comedy actor consideration for this year’s awards.
Earlier this year, the Television Academy changed the rules for submitting in the guest acting categories, stating, “A brief cameo appearance is not eligible for entry.” However, the vague description doesn’t explicitly state whether an actor like Cooper or even Kevin Hart, who appeared in last week’s episode playing himself over a Facetime call with Jeanine Teagues (Quinta Brunson), would constitute a cameo.
The rules further clarify the definition of a guest performer: “The minimum stand-alone and contiguous screen time for eligibility is 5% of the total running time of the submitted episode.”

With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”
“Fishes” dishes out a heated Christmas dinner flashback of the Berzatto family, positioning itself as the series’ pièce de résistance thus far — imagine the “Succession/Connor’s Wedding” version of family dinners, only with more food spills. Directed by Christopher Storer, who also co-wrote the episode with Joanna Calo, “Fishes” seems the obvious pick for Emmy nods in both directing and writing categories.

The Bear is one of those rare stories that comes along once in a blue moon. It doesn't get by on flashy CG, explosions, or modded-out race cars flying down the streets.
Witty dialogue, high stress, and intense drama fuel this machine, and perhaps that's why so many big-name actors are attracted to its frenzied undercurrents.
Kudos to the creative team assembled under the banner of The Bear. They've created a fantastic ride, thrumming with intensity and entertainment without needing to spend a fortune.
They're clearly doing something right. Series creator Christopher Storer (bolstered by incredible writers like Joanna Calo) nails the pace and character beats while accomplishing a rare feat within the industry, perfecting the art of the cameo appearance.
Cameos are often tricky for several reasons. They tend to disrupt the immersive nature of the story. As a prime example, everyone is still trying to forget Ed Sheeran...

Cameos are often tricky for several reasons. They tend to disrupt the immersive nature of the story. As a prime example, everyone is still trying to forget Ed Sheeran...

Comedic actor and writer Bob Odenkirk is loading up for his next foray into the action genre. Odenkirk would take many by surprise when he took on a movie like 2021’s Nobody, which gave him the opportunity to perform John Wick-esque action. The film would even be written by John Wick‘s writer, Derek Kolstad. Odenkirk is set to reunite with Kolstad on another action film with Free Fire‘s Ben Wheatley in the director’s seat, titled Normal. We promise that this Better Call Saul list is all good, man.
First introduced late in Season 2 of Breaking Bad, Bob Odenkirk’s sleazy criminal lawyer extraordinaire, Saul Goodman, immediately became a scene-stealing fan favorite — and then grabbed the spotlight again in Better Call Saul when it premiered in 2015. Co-created by Breaking Bad mastermind Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould (the writer-director of Saul’s first Bad appearance), Better Call Saul serves as both a prequel and sequel to its predecessor. The series covers the years before the man known as Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman, and, ultimately, Omaha Cinnabon manager Gene Takavic, the identity he takes on following the events of Breaking Bad.
Better Call Saul starts off as more of a courtroom and family drama, but the eventual emergence of Breaking Bad power players like Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) help raise the stakes...

David Cross and Bob Odenkirk made headlines in 2022 when they announced plans to reunite for the docu-style Paramount+ comedy “Guru Nation,” in which the “Mr. Show” masterminds were cast as rival cult gurus manipulating the minds of their deluded followers. On a recent podcast appearance, Cross said he believed that their Paramount+ series, which was in early development at Paramount Television Studios, was scrapped because the “marketing and analytics department” rejected it.
Cross and Odenkirk wrote and developed the show, which would have been an eight-episode limited series. He said the show’s pitch ignited a bidding war between four different networks.
“We went with Paramount+, and we wrote up the first four episodes and then a really specific, extensive bible for the last four — all of which we had pitched, like, ‘Here’s the story, here are the characters and here’s how it would work,'” Cross said...

We still don’t know whether Kevin Costner will be returning to his role as John Dutton for the final stretch of Yellowstone when the back half of Season 5 returns this November. However, some fans have a very clever idea for how the show could finish out the character’s arc by hiring someone else for the role: his Hollywood look-alike Bob Odenkirk to step into Dutton’s scruffy boots! For those unfamiliar with the Odenkirk-Costner connection, the gag comes from the former’s hit series Better Call Saul. In the Breaking Bad prequel, Odenkirk stars as a pre-Saul Goodman version of his character, who still goes by his given name of Jimmy McGill and pulls off lots of minor (but still gnarly) cons on unsuspecting rubes. In one instance, he convinces a pair of girls to come home with him and his best friend on the pretense that he’s Kevin Costner,...

The second season of The Bear proved to be as stress-inducing as it was profound, intimate and heartwarming, so it's no surprise that it received even more prestigious nominations and awards than the previous one. In addition to the storyline revolving around the titular restaurant and its staff, no less dramatic were the star cameos that appeared either as relatives of the protagonists or as prominent personalities in the restaurant world.
One of the most unexpected, but certainly welcome cameos came from Will Poulter, who played the former colleague of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and new mentor to Marcus (Lionel Boyce). And now a new set video has surfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter, with Poulter in attendance. All this means that the actor will return to the series and his role may be expanded to a recurring one.

Preparing to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actor? Be sure to take a look through our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest potential nominees. In the absence of reigning champ Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), whose show ended last May, possible category newcomer Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”) has emerged as the clear frontrunner.
None of the six actors who competed for this prize last year – including “Succession” stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong – are involved in the current race. Rounding out that group were Bob Odenkirk of the long-concluded “Better Call Saul” and ongoing series leads Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”). Naturally, this opens the door for dozens of potential first-time contenders.
The only 2024 hopeful who has previously been recognized in this category is Timothy Olyphant, who received a 2011 bid for the role he currently plays on “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of “Justified.

The Last of Us emerged as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of 2023. Starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, the series set a new gold standard for video game adaptations. It also won Pascal his first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series but he failed to win in the category.

Few scripted shows excel at causing your blood pressure to sky-rocket like "The Bear." Christopher Storer's acclaimed series centers on the employees of a Chicago-based eatery, which is itself an inherently high-stress environment. Adding to the discomfort, the show pulls you deeply into its characters' perspectives, using invasive close-ups and rapid-fire edits to place you in their headspace and make their underlying anxieties all the more palpable. Other times, the series holds for vast periods without cutting, which makes you sit with its leads as they quietly work through their feelings. That or scramble for dear life like in the mostly one-shot season 1 episode "Review."
Miraculously, "The Bear" managed to top that episode for sheer emotional turbulence with the extra-long season 2 installment "Fishes." Set about five years before the rest of the season, "Fishes" follows series protagonist Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) as he returns home from a...

Thanks to his appearance as the shady attorney Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, actor Bob Odenkirk became a very popular actor and soon, the character received his own spin-off series in the form of Better Call Saul, which served as a prequel and sequel to Breaking Bad. Odenkirk received praise for his performance as Saul Goodman in both series, but the final season of Better Call Saul almost cost him his life, as the actor had a “small heart attack” while on set, having been rushed to the hospital.

April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was little surprise that Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” would win its second weekend at #1. Despite dropping 60% from its fantastic opening weekend, it still was able to take first place with an estimated $31.7 million to bring its total to $135 million after crossing the $100 million mark in its first week. It also passed the $361 million mark globally, with another $59.3 million grossed overseas this weekend.
The weekend offered two new wide releases in Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, the action-thriller “Monkey Man,” and 20th Century’s horror prequel “The First Omen,” the former released into 3,029 theaters vs. “The First Omen’s” 3,375 theaters. “Monkey Man” came into the...

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.

It’s one of the most iconic Saturday Night Live sketches of all time — and without Christina Applegate, it might never have happened at all.
Applegate recalled the role she played in getting the sketch on the air while chatting with Dana Carvey and David Spade on today’s episode of “Fly on the Wall,” the duo’s SNL-centric podcast.

In the infamous sketch, Farley’s over-the-top physical comedy quickly causes Applegate and Spade to break into laughter. They struggle to contain it for the rest of the scene, as Farley hikes his pants up, squats low, and destroys a coffee table with an explosive jump.

The idea of humans transforming into monsters to address injustice isn’t new; manga like Attack on Titan and Parasyte have already included it. Still, Kaiju No.8 returns to the notion that if a human becomes a kaiju, it must be among the strongest and the greatest of two species.
While some may dismiss Kaiju No.8 as a mere imitation of Attack On Titan, it actually presents the narrative with a finesse that arguably surpasses its predecessor.
Echoing the legendary Godzilla series, Kaiju No.8 mirrors Attack On Titan in several ways, particularly in how its central characters, Kafka Hibino, and Eren Yeager, possess the remarkable ability to morph into the very creatures that threaten their worlds.

Unlike Eren Yeager, who was praised for his mastery of omnidirectional mobility gear against Titans, Kafka is essentially at a disadvantage with his humanity.

Bob Odenkirk might be one of the few lucky people in the whole wide world for not only is he an incredible actor with a huge fan following but the actor once also cheated death. Known best for Breaking Bad and its prequel series Better Call Saul, the actor suffered a widowmaker heart attack while on the set of the prequel.

While thankfully his co-stars and crew rushed to his aid, reviving him through CPR, the actor had the most unusual response after surviving the incident.

Odenkirk’s heart attack was a frightening moment for many who knew the star both professionally and personally. Fortunately, Odenkirk had medical staff nearby the time of the incident who were able to resuscitate him. But as grim as the whole ordeal was, Odenkirk asserted that he seemed the least affected by it after making a full recovery.
“During the actual event, it was like I wasn’t mentally there,” Odenkirk recalled in an interview with The Independent. “Even weeks later when I returned to set, it was an emotional moment, but I was a little bit excluded from it. I don’t know if it’s a defence mechanism,...

Let’s be real. If you had to name the most badass action movie of the past few years, what’s the first flick that comes to mind? Yeah yeah, John Wick might be all the rage for teenagers, Liam Neeson continues to do his geriatric Charlie Bronson, and you can never discount Jason Statham and his brand of brutal butt-kicking. But come on, as far as violently visceral and scintillatingly satisfying underdog tales loaded with realistic fisticuffs and gore-sodden gunfights – nobody does it better than Nobody! Indeed, the 2021 cinematic blitzkrieg starring Bob Odenkirk as an unassuming everyman by day and certified ass-kicker by night hit all the right notes to deliver a vicious and delicious revenge dish for the ages.
With that being said, did you know that a Nobody 2 is currently back in the works? Did you know there were discussions about making a Nobody and John Wick crossover movie?...
