As an individual entity, Pixar Animation Studios is busy handcrafting films that touch people’s hearts. As a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, however, Pixar seems to be grasping at straws, which is why the former is aiming to resort back to the financially safer choice of crowd-pullers.
The Incredibles (Credit: Pixar Animation Studios)
Looking at the way some of Pixar’s most brilliant creations were brought to life, though – case in point: The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), and Luca (2021) to name a few – the prospect of giving into the lure of mass appeal might just be unacceptable.
The Predicament of Pixar Animation Studios
A multitude of films that turned into childhood treasures across the globe encompass creation after creation by Pixar. But the studio accredited with weaving beautiful stories into animated knockouts like Wall-e (2008) and Up (2009) appears to be floundering at the box office.
One such case is that of Peter Sohn...

Mamoudou Athie can practically taste the lobster rolls from the Carlton hotel. He smiles wistfully as he taps into that sense memory of his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, Athie voiced the lead role in Disney-Pixar’s “Elemental,” which closed the fest. And he’s returning this week as part of the first-rate ensemble of Yorgos Lanthimos’ offbeat movie “Kinds of Kindness.”
Discussion of the crustacean-filled dish might seem irrelevant, but it’s perhaps not incidental. Athie begins our conversation by revealing that his first encounter with Lanthimos’ unique sensibilities was 2015’s “The Lobster.” The Mauritanian American actor, who was studying at Yale School of Drama at the time, was captivated by the originality of the material and the conviction the filmmaker brought to his craft.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

“It’s been really interesting to talk about the film in this personal way, because it really was never meant to be so personal,” Elemental director Peter Sohn said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees panel Saturday.
“The seeds sort of started,” the Disney/Pixar vet added of his own Korean family story that birthed the Oscar-nominated toon. “And it rippled through the crew, and a lot of our crew members started bringing their own personal lives to it as well.”

As the nominees for the animated feature Oscar were unveiled this year, one thing was clear: 2D and 2D-influenced animated films are dominating awards season.
Among this year’s nominees, “The Boy and the Heron,” “Nimona,” “Robot Dreams” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” all used traditional 2D techniques or other methods to create a 2D look. Even the CG “Elemental” shows 2D influences across the many environments of Element City. And as the Academy nominates what might be helmer Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, it seems as though the impact of 2D is being recognized once again after CG having dominated the animation space for so long.
The 2D animation of today isn’t quite like cartoons of the past. With new techniques at their disposal, filmmakers are expanding the visuals they can create to tell rich, compelling stories. It’s very often a 2D look that’s intended for...

Elemental director Peter Sohn received an Oscar nomination on Tuesday morning for Best Animated Feature. Even with a story that’s very personal to him, Sohn’s first thoughts go towards his entire crew. “I think about all the work and passion and love that they put into the film, and it fills me up in a way that is very emotional.”
The story of Elemental focuses on the love story between two opposing elemental beings, Ember and Wade, but there is an underlying theme of honoring parents and the sacrifices they made for their children. “When I first pitched, it was seven years ago,” says Sohn. “It was just this anecdote about going to this venue where I got to thank my parents in front of a large crowd, and it was a very emotional moment for me… Getting to this point with the kind of recognition, I just...

Awards season continues. For a year with a lot of notable box office anomalies, the award recognitions are stacked with popular choices. The Golden Globes kicked things off, and then the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards started to show audiences who are seen as the favorites to win this year. Then, the Emmys threw a spotlight on the achievements made in television this past year, and now the list for the 2024 BAFTAs have been announced.
As seen in the previous awards ceremonies, Oppenheimer and Poor Things lead the charge in nominations. Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb film is a stunning achievement for the director as he is known to put out summer films that straddle the line of prestigious awards movies, and Oppenheimer is finally cracking through with nominations for his actors’ performances, as well as his directing and screenwriting. Emma Stone has also been the favorite this year with Poor Things,...

How does one define success? This question has been a favorite of hiring managers and Miss America interview prep coaches for decades, and it's because you can glean a lot about a person's perspective and values based on their answer. When it comes to the world of film, there are typically two pathways to determine success: critical and financial. But even then, it's still an imperfect metric that disregards the longevity and importance of cult films or films that find success through the avenue of historical impact.
Looking at the cinematic landscape of 2023, no other medium exemplified this better than animated feature films. Sure, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" was a massive success at the box office, but the film's value extends far beyond a studio's bottom line. The Pixar flick "Elemental" was thought to be a massive flop, but its financial growth was a reminder that opening weekend performance doesn't...

“There’s that great old quote about Hollywood: ‘No one knows anything,’ ” says Kemp Powers. “Yet everyone acts like they know everything. I get particularly frustrated by some of these trends, because they selectively omit things that don’t validate their thesis,” admits Powers, one of the trio of directors behind Sony Pictures Animation sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which made $690.5 million at the worldwide box office. “There’s always a selective omission. Apparently no one wants to see any superhero movies, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did pretty damn well, too, with superheroes.”

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 14 of the most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And seven of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 42 films have done this on the adapted side including the 2022 double dipper “Coda.”
In 2023 all five nominees for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards were crafted by writer/directors.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.
Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.
The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.
The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

When the June 16-18 weekend box office numbers started to roll in, the results for “Elemental” were disappointing. Based on on its opening weekend performance, early analysis was Pixar’s reign was waning.
“It was challenging in the beginning,” admitted “Elemental” director Peter Sohn when he was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “As time went on I started trying to figure out, ‘Why is this film not connecting?’”
In a world where the opening box office number defines how big of a hit a movie would ultimately be, “Elemental” numbers held surprisingly strong in weeks two and three of release, and by the end of the summer it would categorized a hit rather than a flop. By the end of 2023, a year that was unprecedentedly rough for big-budget films, “Elemental” would be the only film to cost over $200 million that would be profitable ($498 million worldwide).

Acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki earned his first Golden Globe Award nomination on the strength of his semi-autobiographical fantasy film The Boy and the Heron, capping a big week for the film that this weekend opened to a record-breaking $12.8 million, becoming the first original anime title in history to top the North American box office.
The Boy and the Heron was nominated for the animated feature Golden Globe alongside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Elemental, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Suzume and Wish. Both The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Verse received additional nominations for original motion picture score.

Every few years, the Academy tweaks the rules for its animated feature category, with the net result that the nominees tend to skew ever more mainstream. That makes it tough for most of this year’s hopefuls: A record-setting number of animated features submitted. Those who pick the noms are required to watch roughly a third before ranking their top five, which can include additional titles they might have seen on their own. Blockbusters naturally benefit, though “Flee” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” earned nominations in 2022 and 2023, respectively, suggesting that artful indies still stand a chance.

A broad range of titles, animation styles and plenty of music define this season’s animated feature race, with some expected contenders still to debut.
For instance, as the studio celebrates its centennial, Walt Disney Animation Studios hopes to grab one of the five nomination slots with its Nov. 22 musical Wish, which tells the story of how Disney’s wishing star came to be. Its voice cast is led by Ariana DeBose as young protagonist Asha and Chris Pine as villainous King Magnifico. If you had listened to the media industry pundits on Sunday, June 18th, Disney and Pixar had another disappointment on their hands. Peter Sohn’s “Elemental,” just the second Pixar film to open directly in theaters since the end of the pandemic, earned just $29 million in the U.S. over its opening weekend. It was the lowest debut for a Pixar movie since the original “Toy Story” hit theaters in 1995.

For Pixar’s Elemental, composer Thomas Newman was given the challenge of scoring for ‘elemental’ cultures that don’t exist in the real world, while instilling a sense of familiarity for the viewer. He says the real difficulty was to “point towards different cultures and never land on one.”
Directed by Pete Sohn, the story follows Ember (Leah Lewis), a fire resident working in her parents market, whose fiery temper leads her to a chance meeting with Wade (Mamoudou Athie), a sappy water resident working as a city inspector. While fire and water do not mix well, Ember and Wade find themselves growing closer and closer. Rather than focus on the clash between elements for the score, Newman says the most important thing to remember is that it’s a love story.

Pixar's Elemental director Peter Sohn discussed why a key death scene was important to showcase in the movie.
Elemental chronicles an unusual love story between fire (Amber) and water (Wade). The pair went through their own ups and downs throughout the film, ultimately leading to a pivotal moment during its final few scenes.
After a flood spilled over into Firetown, Wade swooped in to save Ember and the blue flame, but they were trapped inside a small room with little air to circulate. As a result, Wade began to evaporate, seemingly dying.
