Visual effects supervisor Scott Squires appeared this week in an online webinar for Moviola.com entitled “Visual Effects on a Limited Budget.” His number one tip? – Don’t fix it in post. Visual effects workers frequently lack health insurance and are forced to work long hours without overtime pay, a new study by the Visual Effects Society found Tuesday. The honorary professional society tapped visual effects supervisor Scott Squires, a Ve supervisor who has worked on films like "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," to survey more than 600 visual effects artists around the globe. The findings are not scientific and are part of a larger examination of the industry's struggles to adjust to a globalizing market and shrinking profit margins. But they do reveal...

Las Vegas -- The movement to rescue the troubled visual effects business is gathering momentum with VFX facility leaders planning to meet in May to discuss forming a global trade association, while artists are talking about the possibility of forming a union. The recent bankruptcy of Rhythm & Hues, which was acquired by a subsidiary of Prana Studios on March 29, has served as flashpoint. And industry leaders Scott Ross and Scott Squires addressed the issues surrounding the bankruptcy Tuesday night at the "Super Meet," an annual gathering held in Las Vegas during the Nab Show, which drew a crowd of more than

Not surprisingly, talk of unionization and a trade association dominated the international Pi Day VFX town hall meetings on Thursday in La, the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Vancouver, and Wellington. Everyone agrees that the VFX industry has reached a tipping point and that the business model with the studios must change. VFX studios, particularly in Los Angeles, are closing or going bankrupt, with Rhythm & Hues becoming the poster child for all the ills of the industry as a result of its stunning failure to stay in business despite its Oscar win for "Life of Pi." But what to do about globalization, slim profit margins, low-ball bidding, tax subsidies, no health care, unpaid overtime, and a lack of solidarity? At the Gnomon School of VFX in Hollywood, keynoted by vet Scott Squires, Deadline reported that they discussed forming a union or a trade association at the very least, with former...

Unionization and the creation of a trade association topped the priorities at a visual effects biz town hall meeting Thursday in Los Angeles where hundreds of VFX professionals gathered to discuss the state of their troubled industry. Despite calls for solidarity within the global community and a general sense of accord, a tense volley of boos erupted halfway through the panel when Visual Effects Society rep Mike Chambers took the mic and mentioned the organization’s call for larger California subsidies made in an open letter last month. In the letter the Ves had announced plans to hold a VFX Congress, which has yet to materialize. “What are you going to do?” shouted one audience member to Chambers, who had no answer for his group. [1] George Lucas' changes [2] to the Star Wars Blu-ray set have drawn some ire as of late, but let's be real -- these things are still gonna sell like hotcakes. While Lucas' alterations really will turn off some of his fans, it's probably a safe bet that many more will shell out for them anyway, even if they're grumbling as they do so. With that in mind, here are six ads for the Blu-ray that try to put you in a more positive state of mind about the updated releases. [via Geek Tyrant [3]] I actually quite like the first video, which is simple but effective -- just brief clips of some of the most thrilling moments from the saga, cut together in a very dynamic way. It's not enough to make me stop hating that Vader "Nooooo!" but it's nice to be reminded of why we love this series so much when...

There's a lot of mixed emotions right now for the upcoming Blu-ray release of George Lucas' the Star Wars saga. I've been waiting for these movie to come out on Blu-ray for a long time so I'm going to end up getting the original trilogy, regardless of the changes, even though I'm not happy with some of them. One of the main reasons I'm getting them though is for the special features, because these things are going to be packed full of awesome Star Wars goodies, including many deleted scenes, one of which is available now for you to watch below.
The deleted scene that was released is a little conversation between Han and Leia on the planet Hoth. It may look familiar, but the dialogue is completely different. Check out the deleted scene below and tell us what you think!

[1]Update: Cover art for the three sets have been added. Lucasfilm's impressive streak of disappointment continues today as they've officially announced [2] the special features for the September 12 Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga. The nine-disc set, which features all six movies in the series, actually has a number of reportedly brand new features including individual archive discs dedicated to each trilogy and several new feature length documentaries. Sounds great, right? Well, the set also contains a lot of material from previous releases and is missing several great features from those same releases. Finally - not that we were expecting anything else, but dare to dream - the upcoming box contains strictly the special editions of the original trilogy. The Star Wars Saga makes its collective HD debut this September, in a nine-disc collection that would make a Sith Lord blush...
The fourth of May be with you! Or something. For those of us already bored with our Star Wars VHS and DVD boxed sets now gathering dust on a shelf somewhere, today saw Lucasfilm make a rather special announcement - Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray.
That this sextet of sci-fi is coming out in high-definition isn’t a particularly well-kept secret, but the host of extras present on the nine disc set perhaps is. Each feature will come on its own separate disc with twin audio commentaries, while a further three discs will come with a profusion of deleted and extended scenes, matte paintings and concept art, plus cast and crew interviews.
The ninth disc, meanwhile, will contain no fewer than eight Star Wars-flavoured documentaries.

In addition, 20th Century Fox has released a teaser for the Blu-ray “Star Wars” films. We’ve got that for you, as well.
It’s a good day to be a “Star Wars” fan, though with all of this information, I’m guessing George Lucas’s disciples probably wish Sept. 16 wasn’t so far, far away.
Bring home the adventure and share Star Wars with your whole family when Star Wars: The Complete Saga comes to Blu-ray Disc from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment!

That's right folks, today is the official unofficial Star Wars holiday celebrated by fans the world over. So if you hear people gladly shouting "May the 4th be with you," you'll understand why. For several years now this has been celebrated and even Lucasfilm has gotten in on the fun over the years. So imagine the delight when they've made a special announcement pertaining to the impending blu-ray releases on this day.
For the past few days the official Star Wars website has been running this picture (above) to tease fans that some announcement would be made on the 4th, about the blu-rays. It seemed kind of odd, considering there wasn't much to announce, so everyone pretty much assumed it would be related to the special features (which no one had any concrete details on).
Lo and behold, that's exactly what we got. While many are already bitching about the...

Whoops. For the last few days, Lucasfilm had a teaser site which indicated an announcement of the details of their upcoming Blu-ray sets for the "Star Wars" films would be hitting today at 6am Us-pst. The details were released, but the site obviously underestimated the interest factor for the sets as within a few minutes it crashed, the teaser site redirecting to foxmovies.com.
Still, before the announcement went tits-up, the key information was collected so lets get right to the important stuff. First, these are unsurprisingly only the special edition versions of the original saga so you'll get to see Greedo shoot first in high-def. The 2004 DVD box-set made further changes from the first 'Special Editions' in 1997 - best bet is the 2004 version is what will be used (though we won't know until the first reviews come in). All the films are in 1080p and with 6.1 DTS Surround Sound.
