Back to the Future remains a hallmark of cinematic excellence, forever cherished by audiences worldwide. But while Michael J. Fox’s portrayal of Marty McFly is etched into our collective memories, there were pivotal recasting decisions that could’ve drastically altered our perception of the movie.
Not only was Eric Stoltz once set to lead the film, but another key character, Marty’s girlfriend Jennifer, also saw significant casting changes. Dive into the lesser-known tales behind these casting switch-ups and the intricate tapestry of decisions that gave us the classic as we know it today.

We see recasts pretty regularly on the big screen. For some franchises like Friday the 13th and Halloween, it’s almost a tradition. It’s less common in a non-genre arena. However, other major films have seen some of their important characters get recast for various reasons. Here are a few of them:
Back to the Future: George McFly and Jennifer
Two roles were recast in Back to the Future: Part II. The first recast was that of Jennifer who in the first film is played by Claudia Wells and then in the sequel is played by Elizabeth Shue. Not only did Shue replace Wells in the sequel, but all the flashback scenes to the first film were re-shot with her to make it make sense. The recast here was due to Claudia Wells taking a break from acting to go take care of her mother who had been diagnosed with cancer.

In the last decade, it’s become a common refrain among fans and industry players alike: the filmmakers should’ve “planned it better.” This trilogy could’ve been mapped out; those five sequels needed to be outlined first. Perhaps this is inevitable in an era where “shared universe” is part of the everyday vernacular, yet I cannot help but be amused when folks grow wistful over sequels with allegedly concrete roadmaps: franchises like Star Wars, Godfather… and the Back to the Future trilogy.
Whenever social media discussions about sequels or franchises that most smoothly told their sagas rear, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale’s little trio of time traveling adventures always spring to the forefront. With their economy of storytelling and strong fixation on characters, particularly lovable Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and eccentric Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), the three movies’ narrative is as stainless as the steel doors on the DeLorean.

There are few Hollywood blockbusters that have ever come as close to perfection as Back to the Future. The time traveling adventure captured lightning in a bottle, and for 35 years has remained one of the most beloved and rewatchable movies in history. There’s hardly a soul out there who doesn’t love Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s first adventure, and audiences would definitely be on board with the idea of a fourth installment.
A reboot or a remake would be viewed as sacrilege, though, and Robert Zemeckis has no intention of giving up the rights anyway, leading to a theoretical Part IV being the only chance to see the characters back together again. Nostalgia-driven sequels aren’t always the best idea, however, and there’s every chance the end result would end up harming the legacy of the original trilogy rather than enhancing it.

You didn’t have to be paying that much attention to note the Jennifer from Back to the Future changed drastically in appearance from the first to the second movie as Elisabeth Shue took over the part from Claudia Wells, but the thankful yet sad part of this is that Wells stepped away because of a personal tragedy in her life. Her mother had stage four lymphoma at the time, and there was simply too much going on in her life for Claudia to continue with the role. Shue turned in a good enough performance to make it possible for a

It has to be said that this Zoom meeting went about as it was expected since getting the Back to the Future gang together again was a kick, even if it didn’t include Crispin Glover, which isn’t too surprising. If anyone remembers, Crispin had a bit of a falling out with the creators long ago when they used his likeness for the second movie even though he wasn’t in it. So it could be that he just wasn’t interested in talking, though it is interesting that Claudia Wells, the original Jennifer from the first movie, did show up at the

Josh Gad staged a virtual Back to the Future reunion on his new Reunited Apart YouTube series this week, and the turnout was pretty amazing. Not only did Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, director Robert Zemeckis, and screenwriter Bob Gale take part, but they also roped in Lea Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, and both actresses who played Jennifer (Elisabeth Shue and Claudia Wells), along with “Power of Love” singer Huey Lewis and composer Alan Silvestri. J.J. Abrams had no involvement in the trilogy, but he’s a big fan and they let him join the fun,...

Chicago – Three days to go before the two-day ‘Mainframe Comic Con’ – a completely free-to-join online comic book convention – will kick off, and on the first day a rush of movie nostalgia will take place when actress Claudia Wells will be a guest representing the original “Back to the Future.” Wells portrayed Marty McFly’s girlfriend Jennifer Parker in that classic film.
The Mainframe Comic Con had the idea, during this stay-at-home timeframe, to put on an entire Comic Con – guests, artists, exhibitors and even cosplay – all online. Claudia Wells is just one of the many guests (click here for the line-up) scheduled to virtually appear on this free-to-participate comic convention event. That’s right, if you want to experience a Q&a with a cast member of “Back to the Future,” you can find her at the Mainframe Comic Con.

Attention Duuudes! It's been 36 years since Fast Times at Ridgemont High first hit theaters — and it remains one of the coolest teen movies of all time! After all this time, we decided to see what Sean Penn, Phoebe Cates, and the rest of the Ridgemont High students have been up to since 1982. While there was never a sequel of the hit movie, it did inspire a spin-off called Fast Times in 1986, which featured popular actors including Patrick Dempsey, Claudia Wells, and more. The series sadly only lasted seven seasons. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) That said, we're craving another Fast Times movie, although, we're not sure if it will ever happen — and if it does, Sean seems like he'd sit it out. While the '80s was a booming time in Sean's career, he recently revealed that he's basically close to retirement because he no longer enjoys working in Hollywood. "I...

Contrary to what a dozen or so faulty Facebook memes have told you in recent years, we have not reached the day that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) travel to in Back to the Future: Part II until right now. Wednesday, October 21, 2015. As we sit and finally celebrate the real Back to the Future Day, it’s time to look at what the movie got right and what never quite materialized. Obviously we don’t have hoverboards or Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactors in every kitchen, but revisiting the classic Back to the Future series got me thinking: Is any of the stuff we saw happening yet? The Answer: Some is, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do. Sure, Back to the Future: Part II is a sci-fi comedy lark, but like any film predicting the world of the future – even one 30 to 40 years away (we...

Since its release 30 years ago, "Back to the Future" has been everyone's favorite time-travel movie. It's remained a must-see long enough for Marty McFly's own kids to enjoy it.
Even so, there's much you may not know about the beloved sci-fi comedy, from the unused ideas that popped up in other films, to why there has yet to (thankfully) be a reboot. To celebrate Back to the Future Day (October 21), here are 30 things you need to know about Marty McFly's first trip through time.
"Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy" is available to own now on Blu-ray & DVD.
1. Director Robert Zemeckis and co-screenwriter Bob Gale (pictured above) tried for years to create a time-travel story. The key came in 1980, when Gale was looking over his father's high school yearbook and wondered whether he and his father would have been friends if they'd both been teenagers at the same time.

Lightning strikes a clock tower at the climax of a high-stakes, high-octane cinematic sequence. Bullies run after our 17-year-old hero in a thrilling skateboard chase scene. A late-night test drive fills us with wonder as we first see a DeLorean travel through time, leaving behind trails of fire. Showmasters has also created an initiative titled Up to 88!, which aims to raise $88,000 to support the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

We've now reached the year in which the future portions of Back To The Future Part II take place, and it's also the thirtieth anniversary of the original film. To mark both those auspicious landmarks, production of an exhaustive documentary has been underway for a while. As it approaches its home stretch, here's a new trailer for Back In Time to give us a taste of what's been happening.Jason Aron is the director, with Lee Leshen the producer. The pair have assembled an impressive cast of talking heads from the trilogy, including Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Claudia Wells, director Robert Zemeckis, producer Bob Gale, composer Alan Silvestri, and enthusiasts such as Community's Dan Harmon. Sadly there's no sign of Crispin Glover, but that was probably to be expected...Along with the making-of stories, the film also examines the fan culture that's built up around the...

Fans don’t want to see it. Studios try to avoid it. But sometimes a recast in the midst of a movie franchise is inevitable.
Whether it be a scheduling conflict, salary negotiations gone wrong, or even an unexpected death – we’re taking a look at six times a movie recast was too obvious to ignore.
1. James “Rhodey” Rhodes – The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Terrence Howard played James “Rhodey” Rhodes in 2008’s Iron Man. But a salary conflict stopped Terrence from returning for the sequel. Re-casting Don Cheadle as Rhodey for Iron Man 2 was a bit obvious, so Marvel made a light of it in the 2010 sequel. Cheadle’s first line: “Look, it’s me. I'm here. Deal with it. Let's move on.”
2. The Incredible Hulk – The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Edward Norton played The Incredible Hulk in the 2008 standalone film. But when it came time for The Avengers, Marvel decided the team would assemble sans Norton. [link...

Pioneering woman director Lois Weber socially conscious drama 'Shoes' among Library of Congress' Packard Theater movies (photo: Mary MacLaren in 'Shoes') In February 2015, National Film Registry titles will be showcased at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater – aka the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation – in Culpeper, Virginia. These range from pioneering woman director Lois Weber's socially conscious 1916 drama Shoes to Robert Zemeckis' 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. Another Packard Theater highlight next month is Sam Peckinpah's ultra-violent Western The Wild Bunch (1969), starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. Also, Howard Hawks' "anti-High Noon" Western Rio Bravo (1959), toplining John Wayne and Dean Martin. And George Cukor's costly remake of A Star Is Born (1954), featuring Academy Award nominees Judy Garland and James Mason in the old Janet Gaynor and Fredric March roles. There's more: Jeff Bridges delivers a colorful performance in...

Vitals is a new claustrophobic horror movie from director Mark Morgenstern. The film stars Christopher Showerman as Richard Carsen, a man who’s trying save his on-the-rocks marriage by taking his wife on vacation to India. Unfortunately, he winds up on ice and about to be harvested for his organs.
Morgenstern recently directed a documentary on the effects of infidelity in the electronic age. It’s called Affairs Across America: The Ashley Madison Story and is centered around the multimillionaire internet guru who started the infamous non-singles dating website with the slogan: “Life is short. Have an affair.”
Perhaps that was the impetus for making his lead character/victim in Vitals a cheating husband. We asked. Read on to find out what Morgenstern said.
Dread Central: So, Morgenstern… any relation to Rhoda? I’m sure you never heard that before; I just thought I'd throw out that little brilliant, totally unique joke of mine.

Vitals tells the harrowing tale of a man (Christopher Showerman) who is kidnapped while on vacation in India. He wakes up in an abandoned motel room in a tub of ice with a kidney missing. Little does he know, it’s his heart his captors want next...
And it's only a matter of time before he discovers his wife (Charlene Amoia) in the adjacent room waiting to be the next victim to the organ-harvesting goons. Having taken the vacation to work on their failing marriage, the couple must now set their differences aside and use each other's intellects and skills to escape before their captors return.
We sat down with Vitals producer on set one day, midway through shooting, to see what was up.
Dread Central: So, you’re the producer. What does that mean, exactly, on this set? Seems to me like you’re doing a little bit of everything!

Although Christopher Showerman is a very fit actor (having swung from a vine wearing only a loincloth and muscles in the George of the Jungle sequel, to mention just one rather physical role), he spends most of his time in the new horror movie Vitals unconscious, semi-conscious, and about to be knocked unconscious.
He plays Richard Carson, a man who’s taken his wife on vacation to India in hopes of fixing their severed marriage… unfortunately, it’s he who is severed when he runs afoul of some nasty organ-snatchers who kidnap him and start a’cutting.
Dread Central: How’d you first hear about this role?
Christopher Showerman: They sent me the script when I was on vacation in another state, and it showed up on my phone.
DC: It would have been better if it was in another country. Next time, adjust your story. Like, “Yes, I...

So, the Pope and a Cardinal are sitting together on a cross-country flight. The Pope is doing a crossword puzzle. He turns to the Cardinal and asks, “Do you know a four-letter word for ‘woman’ that ends in U-n-t?” The Cardinal unhesitatingly says, “Aunt.” The Pope blinks and replies, “Oh yes, of course. Do you have an eraser?”
While you may think that hoary old joke has nothing to do with horror, there actually is a connection – you see, the villain in the upcoming horror film Vitals loves crossword puzzles and he’s got a wicked, skewed sense of humor.
Kaliya, the brains behind the body-plundering organ-snatching ring of criminals, is played by Sachin Mehta. Mehta was in character dealing with uppity henchmen, an unconscious victim, and doing a crossword puzzle just before he sat down to talk with us. Here’s what he had to say.

Charlene Amoia, who’s now famous for being “the Mother” on the ever-popular TV sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," had only appeared in an episode or two before we caught up with her on the set of the gory new organ-theft thriller, Vitals.
Far from the cushy network TV gig, she spends her days covered in fake bruises and blood, sequestered in a remote independent studio in the San Fernando Valley. In Vitals, Amoia plays Dr. Jane Carson, a woman whose medical degree gets her nowhere after her husband is kidnapped and surgically plundered for his kidneys right before her eyes. Still, the knowledge does come in handy – read on, to find out what she has to say about that.

An early concept trailer for Erik C. Bloomquist's (Midnight Brew) Founder's Day is here. This indie slasher title was filmed in Connecticut this past summer. This is a Mainframe Pictures production. And, the first clip shows some of the film's mystery and story. The story for Founder's Day involves the murder of a high school student and a special anniversary. Fairfield is shocked by the death, but the celebration of the town's 200th Anniversary continues. With more murders taking place, this year's celebration is taking a bloody turn into chaos and suspicion. The concept trailer for the film has some high production elements and one poor one. This early trailer has been dubbed and the audio looks poorly synched. However, other elements, from shooting to acting, look well done. Hopefully, other trailers will have better audio. Fans of indie slasher films can preview Founder's Day below. Writer: Erik C. Bloomquist.

The Saw franchise helped kick off the so-called “torture porn” sub-genre of horror films, And whether or not you choose to accept its existence doesn’t deny that it has spawned a resurgence in the Grand Guignol.
For his film Vitals, it’s clear writer/director Marc Morgenstern wants to keep the legacy of James Wan’s franchise alive.
Morgenstern has just announced that “How I Met Your Mother” star Charlene Amoia (pictured) and Christopher Showerman (The Land That Time Forgot, Complacent) have been cast in his Saw-esque thriller that begins shooting in Los Angeles next month.
Vitals features Showerman as an unassuming electrician who wakes up in an abandoned motel room in a tub of ice with his kidney missing. It’s only a matter of time before he finds his wife in the adjacent room waiting to be the next victim to a horrible organ harvesting organization.

Great Scott! Did you know that 28 years ago this weekend Back to the Future was released in cinemas in the Us?
One of the finest films of the 1980s, it made a star out of its DeLorean and shot Michael J Fox to fame as time-travelling teenager Marty McFly. To mark this birthday for one of our all-time favourites, here are 28 reasons why Digital Spy hearts Back to the Future.
1. The opening scene
After an intricate camera sweep across ticking clocks, the film literally explodes into life as wannabe rock star Marty strums a Dolby-exploding guitar chord.
2. The DeLorean
This gull-winged sports car - modified by Doc Brown for temporal displacement - became the iconic image of the series. Production on the Dmc-12 stopped in 1982 as the company went into liquidation, but the vehicle lives on in pop culture thanks to Robert Zemeckis's movie.

When people speak of the possibility of alternate dimensions, they leave out the one closest to us all. We like to imagine a universe so similar to our own, nearly identical to the world in which we live if not for one difference. Maybe in one dimension, Bill Clinton was ousted from office, not just thrown up for impeachment. Maybe in another dimension, HD-DVD won the high-definition home-media war instead of Blu-ray. Or maybe, in some beautiful reality, Scott Norwood didn’t miss that field goal in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. The possibilities are tantalizing because they are literally endless. In all the wonder and curiosity, however, most of us fail to recognize that there already exists another universe snuggled up tightly to ours,...

Close calls in movie casting history always fascinate me. The possibility of some other actor inhabiting what has become the definitive version of that character in your head is mind boggling. The reasons why people turn down roles, especially in successful franchises, are especially confusing. Those last minute casting changes are heartbreaking at times, especially when you see the aftermath of events, and how the actor's careers were affected.
With all of the casting switch-ups there have been, we've decided to aim our sights at recasting in movie trilogies. We've broken it up by recasting of characters that took place during filming, between a film and its sequels, and before the actor began filming their part. We've also included a close call, and some honorable mentions, as well as rare some footage and photos. Enjoy!
During Filming:

But instead I gave my mornings to the rote-searing of Back to the Future on to my brain and, looking back, I'm not completely sad about that. There were worse films I could have...

This has not been a good year for Los Angelino/extraterrestrial relations. First there was Battle: Los Angeles. Then The Asylum’s Battle of Los Angeles. Now there’s Alien Armageddon, which, not surprisingly, was originally titled Battleground Los Angeles.
On the same day that Cowboys & Aliens limps onto store shelves, another alien invasion movie featuring a cowboy battling aliens (judging by the cover art) will be touching down on DVD and Blu-ray via Phase 4 Films.
Starring Rochelle Vallese, Katharine MeEwan, Claudia Wells, Don Scribner, Marilyn Ghigliotti and DeeDee Bigelow, with a cameo by Virginia Hey, filmmaker Neil Johnson’s Alien Armageddon is an impressive looking low budget alien invasion effort about humanity’s last stand in the last remaining city on Earth – Los Angeles.
Have a look at the trailer. Seriously, have a look at it. Really damn impressive for low budget sci-fi movie.

(As our editor Matt Holmes turns 25 today, he’s out of office and we are going to re-publish some old favourites. Such as this beauty from Gareth Bunkham)
