Bob Yari’s startup mini-major Magenta Light Studios has found its first in-house film production in “Summerhouse,” a period drama set against the anxiety of the Vietnam War.
“Bombshell” and “Halloween” star Malcolm McDowell will lead the project with Jacob Ward, an up-and-comer who made his debut in Ray Romano’s 2022 film “Somewhere in Queens.” Ed Kaplan (“2 Graves in the Desert”) will write the script and direct, with Shelly Jonson as director of photography.
Production will begin in Connecticut this month. Moonstone Entertainment will represent the international sales, previewing for buyers out of Cannes’ Marche du Film.
“Summerhouse” follows college grad Ned Stern (Ward) awaiting his draft into the Vietnam War. Ned spends his last summer of freedom caring for a belligerent wealthy alcoholic man (McDowell) at his lakeside mansion, only to find himself falling in love with a free-spirited and wild girl while questioning his commitment to his country.

Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.
The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.
Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!
Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

Paramount’s hit horror movie Smile gets a sequel this Halloween with returning director Parker Finn’s Smile 2, and the first plot details have made their way out of Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation this afternoon. The first footage from the upcoming sequel was shown off at the event, but unfortunately it is not (yet) being released for the rest of us online.
The good news? A whole bunch of websites including Slash Film were on hand at CinemaCon this week, so we’ve at least got a Smile 2 footage description to work with for now.
Slash Film recaps what they saw, “The teaser footage for Smile 2 that played at CinemaCon 2024 was focused on the new character played by Naomi Scott — a music celeb whose glamorous world is about to get dragged to hell. After a few glimpses of her pop star performances, the footage showed Scott’s...

Filmmaker Parker Finn has experienced a career start that most can only dream of. After his 11-minute horror short "Laura Hasn't Slept" screened at SXSW 2020, Finn signed a deal with Paramount Pictures to adapt it into a feature-length film, "Smile," which stars Sosie Bacon as a psychotherapist who becomes targeted by a sadistic demon. After witnessing a patient's suicide, she's plagued by hallucinations of people she knows staring at her with very creepy smiles, and finds herself unable to trust anything she sees or hears.
"Smile" grossed more than $217 million at the box office, a massive success given its $17 million budget, and a sequel was soon greenlit, with Finn returning as writer and director. Kyle Gallner, whose character survived the last movie and was implied to be the demon's next target, has returned for "Smile 2," and is joined by new cast members Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula,...

Plot details on this thriller are being kept under wraps, and Variety notes that reviews from audience members who saw the movie at Fantastic Fest last year ” hint that the film works best with as little information as possible going in.” Apparently it has something...

Parker Finn is bringing another treat for horror fans with his 2022 horror mystery Smile sequel. The White Lotus and Euphoria star Lukas Gage has joined the cast of Smile 2 and he has a positive update on the film but didn’t reveal it without sharing an intense moment on the set.
Lukas Gage in Euphoria
While the sequel is still unnamed, the movie has actually wrapped filming, at least the part of Gage as he described appearing on a SiriusXM episode. Good news for horror fans: it is quietly moving ahead at a decent pace and will soon be ready to hit the theaters.

After teasing on Sirius Xm’s The Jess Cagle Show that Smile 2 is so gory that he “vomited off-camera,” Lukas Gage clarified his comments while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet for Road House‘s New York City premiere.
“I didn’t puke, I dry-heaved,” noted the Euphoria alum. “I was really shocked how intense it is on the day. You just think, ‘Oh, it’s acting, it’s gonna be fine,’ but that movie is so scary. The whole crew was terrified. That smile itself is just so creepy and then you throw the most gory scenes on top of it, I just, yeah, I have a weak stomach too. I’m a wimp.”
Gage kept mum on his role in the movie, but expressed how ecstatic he was to be part of the hit horror flick’s sequel. “I don’t say this about...

Last week saw the release of a pretty terrible Blumhouse horror movie in Imaginary. This followed their other terrible outing this year, Night Swim. Both of these were PG-13 ventures which failed on nearly every conceivable level. This is the same company that produced great horror films like Get Out, The Invisible Man, and The Black Phone. Those films had such imagination and respect for the genre. So what the hell happened?
The biggest issue with Blumhouse these days is that there’s no apparent passion behind these PG-13, middle-of-the-road horror movies like what we’ve seen from them this year. They used to take unproven filmmakers, give them a chance with a low budget, and get results. Sure, those results would vary, but there was at least some kind of momentum that was more than just profit-based. Because the Blumhouse of new seems to just be chasing trends. What’s that?...

From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. Within the reality of the Scream films, the murders committed by various maniacs wearing Ghostface costumes have inspired a franchise of movies called Stab – and in Scream (2022), we saw a glimpse of a moment in Stab 8 that showed a different sort of Ghostface. This one worn a metallic mask, had short sleeves on their costume, and was blasting away at someone with a flamethrower. Now the collectible makers at Neca have taken to social media to reveal that their latest Ghostface action figure is inspired by that moment in Scream (2022) / Stab 8! This thing is called the Ultimate Ghostface Inferno action figure, and you can see images of it at the bottom of this article.

Cillian Murphy recently had some choice words for his film Red Eye (watch it Here), a Wes Craven-directed thriller that was released back in 2005. But he wasn’t entirely negative. So that got me thinking: Is Red Eye a good film? Or is it more in the so bad it’s good category? I personally saw Red Eye in theaters and have always had a soft spot for it. But if Oppenheimer‘s own Cillian Murphy has an issue with it, maybe it’s worth a second gander. So let’s see whether it’s good, bad, or somewhere in between as we revisit Red Eye in the video embedded above!
Scripted by Carl Ellsworth, who crafted the story with Dan Foos, Red Eye has the following synopsis: In the wake of her grandmother’s funeral, hotel manager Lisa Reisert is waiting to fly back home when she meets charming Jackson Rippner at check-in.

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. Filmmaker Kevin Smith is best known for his work in the comedy genre. His movies often center on comic book and Star Wars-loving guys, and tend to be packed with stoner humor and vulgar but amusing conversations about sex. But once he was more than a decade and several movies into his movie career, he decided to switch things up, making a horror film that was inspired by disturbing headlines and is packed with death, damnation – and some damn fine acting. Released in 2011, Kevin Smith’s first horror movie was called Red State (watch it Here), and if you haven’t seen it, it’s the best horror movie you never saw.

Considering that Paramount were considering simply putting the film straight onto its streaming platform, Smile’s incredible success became a key moment in that year’s shifting narrative regarding the value of theatrical runs for films of all shapes and sizes. Of course, that success also meant that a sequel was inevitable, and the project was fast-tracked into development with director Parker Finn returning to helm the next film in the series as part of a long-term deal he signed with Paramount.

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.
Berchtold's Randy is not just your average fast food worker, he might as well be invisible. He's passive to the point of enduring exploitation from everyone around him,...

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

The sequel doesn’t yet have an official title but Parker Finn is returning to direct Smile 2 for Paramount, and The Wrap reports that Smile star Kyle Gallner will also be back.
Additionally, Rosemarie DeWitt (“The Staircase”) has joined the sequel’s cast, alongside the previously announced Lukas Gage (“The White Lotus”) and Naomi Scott (Power Rangers).
Smile 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on October 18, 2024.
Parker Finn signed a multi-year, first-look deal with Paramount Pictures in the wake of Smile striking it big at the box office, and a sequel to the film was the first order of business.

Writer/director Parker Finn is gearing up to head into production on a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and now she has a co-star. Deadline reports that Scott is being joined in the cast by Lukas Gage, whose previous credits include episodes of Euphoria, The White Lotus, You, and the soon-to-wrap-up Fargo season 5. Smile was based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept (watch it Here), which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category.

Parker Finn’s Smile, an adaptation of his own short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, will expand its world of horror next year with Smile 2. Deadline reports that Naomi Scott has been set to star in Paramount Pictures’ untitled sequel.
Smile 2 will hit theaters on October 18, 2024.
Plot details, of course, are under wraps at this time. In the first film, “After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”
While we can expect the mysterious affliction haunting Rose in Smile will return, the bigger question now is whether Kyle Gallner will return.

The synopsis for Strange Darling really says it all. Written and directed by Jt Mollner the mysterious thriller is “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer”. Starring Willa Fitzgerald (The Goldfinch) and Kyle Gallner, who genre fans will no doubt recognize from Smile and Jennifer’s Body (just to name a few) Strange Darling is a cat-and-mouse story set over a short period of time, presented in a jumbled fashion like Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill (or any other Quentin Tarantino movie for that matter).
Honestly, the less you know about this one going in, the better. It does have a few cards hidden up its sleeve but the whole bloody affair really hinges on the ever-surprising performances of its two leads. Kyle Gallner is electric in pretty much everything you’ve seen him in and he’s just as engaging a performer here, but Willa...

Serial-killer movies are a dime a dozen these days, with the true-crime industrial complex exploiting the ill-deeds sprees of increasingly obscure murderers to keep up with audience demand. Anyone wary of the genre might balk at the idea of “Strange Darling,” a cat-and-mouse drama about the tail end of a murder spree, but to do so would be to miss out on an exemplar of the form. Writer-director Jt Mollner flips the script on this tired genre, crafting the cleverest thriller of its kind in a while with a mighty assist from a pair of killer performances by co-leads Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. Best experienced with as little foreknowledge as possible, “Strange Darling” demands a bit of patience, but it also rewards it.

After a brief prologue that promises – both via text and voiceover – a dramatization of the true story of the final killings of the most unique American serial killer of the 21st century, we are treated to a mesmerizing opening titles sequence set to a rendition of "Love Hurts," featuring a woman (Willa Fitzgerald) running through the woods in red scrubs. The next chapter introduces us to the man chasing her – flannel clad, aviators wearing, moustache rocking Kyle Gallner, whose character is referred to in the credits as The Demon. Strange Darling is the second feature by the writer/ director Jt Mollner, following Outlaws and Angels (2016), a revisionist take on western. It stands to reason to suggest that Strange Darling somewhat plays...

There’s a scene in Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling where Ed Begley Jr. makes breakfast. He chars sausages, unsheathes and melts a stick of yellow butter, then cracks a messload of eggs and leaves them to bubble while pouring out thick globs of pancake batter in a second pan. He layers the cakes with the eggs and encased pork meat and yet more butter before drowning the whole thing in whipped cream that promptly starts to liquefy. He places the mess in front of his wife (Barbara Hershey), who comically offsets the caloric mound by placing a single, wimpy red strawberry on top. This scene is almost certainly unintentionally illustrative of Moller’s approach to his sophomore feature: a twisty cat and mouse thriller so overstuffed with delicious elements that it’s constantly on the verge of becoming too much of a good thing.

“Do you have any idea the kind of risks a woman like me takes every time she decides to have a little bit of fun?” So says our female protagonist in writer/director Jt Mollner‘s Strange Darling, a film that dares us to question the roles men and women are expected to play. Are women just prudes who don’t love casual sex? Are men just rapist serial killers waiting for their next mark? What exactly are the boundaries of consent? Strange Darling asks these questions, making for a smarter-than-you’d-expect entry into the cat and mouse thriller genre.

Smile was a surprise hit for Paramount last year, grossing $217 million worldwide; Not bad for a film which was originally intended for a streaming release. The studio is clearly ready for more, as they’ve announced that they’ve slated Smile 2 for an October 18, 2024 release.
Given the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, there’s only so far development on Smile 2 can proceed, but Paramount wanted to nail down that release date nonetheless. Parker Finn will once again return to direct, and although he purposefully left the door open for a sequel, he said last year that he wouldn’t want to repeat himself.
“I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile,” Finn said. “There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another, wanted to put in the movie,...

The open road is a terrifying place for a young woman in the first look at “Strange Darling,” a horror-thriller from director J.T. Mollner set to premiere at this week’s Fantastic Fest.
Described as “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer,” the project stars Willa Fitzgerald (Amazon’s “Reacher”) and Kyle Gallner. Fitzgerald, known only in the film as “The Lady,” barrels down a highway in a red Ford Pinto in a clip exclusive to Variety, escaping Gallner’s mad pursuit. After shooting out her back windshield and trying to mow her down with a pickup truck, the cat-and-mouse game moves on foot through the wilderness.
“This film was a sort of dream (or nightmare) that I was compelled to bring to life. So much about it – the colors, the music, the overall visual aesthetic, and the characters were all so clear before we even shot anything.

Writer-director Laurence Vannicelli’s follow-up to his little-seen debut Vera represents a classy, spare shard of quasi-horror so elevated it’s barely horror at all despite the deployment of a few supernatural bangs and whizzes. It’s more in the tradition of psychological thrillers from the old days that critics still pine for, such as Don’t Look Now (1973) or Obsession (1976), all teasing ambiguity and deep dives into the messier corners of lovers’ psyches. In this case, Mother, May I? goes sniffing around the dark cellars of the mind where men keep complicated feelings about their mothers locked up, but which break out and play havoc with romantic relationships in the present.

There’s an intense foreboding in Laurence Vannicelli’s horror film. As soon as Mother, May I? begins, we feel something’s not right. With just a handful of characters, the film is at once a psychological horror film as well as a ‘chamber drama’ of sorts, as it peels back the layers of the characters to such an extent that we are left wondering who these people are. Not to be confused with the Spanish road trip horror of the same name, The Passenger, the new film from Carter Smith, opens with a woman, blood spurting from her eye socket crawling towards a young boy. It’s a nightmare and Randy is woken from it to start another tedious day at Burgers, Burgers, Burgers. He should have taken it as an omen and stayed home.
As they’re getting the diner ready to open one of the other employees starts harassing him, something that seems to be a regular occurrence. Benson watches in disgust before walking out to have a smoke. Then, as if something just snapped he pulls a shotgun from his car and goes back inside killing everyone except Randy whom he takes hostage.
