John Oliver has finally gotten rid of the creepy dolls acquired by the show that were washing up on a Texas beach earlier this year. And yes, he did it in the most John Oliver fashion possible — using a famous singer and talking trash cans.
Though the late-night host is still on hiatus until the new year, he returned Sunday night with a new web exclusive, this time all about trash. As always, he managed to sneak in a few digs to set up the bit — in this case he noted that trash is, “the thing Abraham Lincoln produced more of than he did anything else” — before getting to the point of the segment. And this time, the point was to announce he was finally free of the dolls.
If you’re struggling to remember which creepy dolls he’s talking about, here’s a quick refresher. In July, Oliver did another web exclusive,...

As uncomfortable a viewing experience it may be, the best films from Todd Solondz slowly reveal themselves with their character intricacies and distinct touches, burrowing deep inside as they replay in one’s mind. In his latest feature, Wiener-Dog, he’s crafted a series of incisive, perceptive vignettes mutually connected by the shifting owners of his title character. Aptly described by Solondz as Au Hasard Balthazar meets Benji, there’s no denying it bears his brand of humor and heartbreak in every scene.
After being dropped off at the local kennel by his owner, the first section finds the lovable dachshund as a gift to Remi (Keaton Nigel Cooke), a young boy recovering after being treated for cancer. As he learns the responsibilities of having the animal, which involves a cinematically unprecedented “Clair de Lune”-scored trail of dog shit, his mother, Dina (Julie Delpy), lectures on the necessities of putting the puppy to sleep.

The Cardigans singer on an enigmatic New York songwriter, making special trips to buy chocolate, Frances Ha and the pleasures of a good biography
Nina Persson is best known as the lead singer of the Cardigans, the Swedish pop-rock band propelled to international stardom by their 1996 single Lovefool, which was was featured on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo + Juliet. After The Cardigans' fourth album, Gran Turismo, went multiplatinum in 1998, the five-piece took a break from recording to pursue solo projects, with Persson releasing records as A Camp. In 2006, she became a member of the Cake Sale – a musical collective whose album profits were donated to charity – while other collaborations have included a duet on the Manic Street Preachers track Your Love Alone Is Not Enough, as well as an appearance on the 2010 Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse album, Dark Night of the Soul. The Our Idiot Brother soundtrack. Some might say that marketing/advertising is a profoundly dishonourable profession. That it’s all a three-ring circus operated by slick-talking snake oil salesman, peddling premium-priced versions of the emperor’s new underpants to gullible schmoes, with this in turn further fuelling the excrement-spewing media pipeline that pumps crap directly into the poor unsuspecting public’s collective cranium.
And when you find that a movie which was called My Idiot Brother just six months ago, when it played to a largely positive reception at Sundance, has now been rechristened Our Idiot Brother ahead of a Us release at the end of next month, it’s hard not to wonder just how many marketing monkeys it took to change that particular re-branding light bulb, and how much green they scored for their (lack of) efforts.
But if the name-change smacks of tinkering for the sake of charging an oversized fee,...

Spin named Robyn’s “All Hearts” tour as one of the “25 Must-See Summer Tours.” “[Robyn] swept New York City’s Webster Hall into a frenzy so wild that it threatened to collapse the floors of that historic venue and send the sold-out crowd straight to their calamitous deaths,...

Tom Jones is in talks with The Killers to record a collaboration once the band returns from hiatus. The pop veteran has teamed up with numerous acts over the years and released an album of duets, "Reload", in 1999, which featured recordings with artists including Stereophonics star Kelly Jones and The Cardigans' Nina Persson.
"It's Not Unusual" hitmaker Jones admits he's keen to head in to the studio with The Killers and has already spoken to frontman Brandon Flowers about the project. He tells NME.com, "I've spoken to Brandon Flowers. He said he admired what I'd done in my career. There's a connection there because he's from Las Vegas, and of course I've performed there so many times over the years."
"The material has to be right. That's always been my main concern, with whichever people I've worked with."...

We may be in a recession, but even when the economy is in the toilet, you still need to have great music. That's why we invented "Bargain Spins," a new feature that focuses on overlooked albums that also happen to be available in every used or bargain bin in every record store in the country (and if you don't have a record store in your town anymore, you can still find them discounted in most every digital music store or on sites like Half.com). So enjoy some great records you might have missed.
James' Pick: The Cardigans, Gran Turismo (1998): It occurs to me now that, after doing three installments of "Bargain Spins," perhaps I am getting a tad bit predictable. It seems I tend to favor "disastrous" albums — those willfully-different, arty-for-art's-sake albatrosses that sink careers and alienate fans. You know, the kind that are usually followed by an...

The Cardigans’ Nina Persson singer is as sharp and sassy as ever
Few female artists can trill life into a cold breakup line like “Don’t give me platinum to weigh down my wrist / I’ve got injunctions, so cease and desist.” But sharp-witted, ex-Cardigans crooner Nina Persson is just such a gal, on the lopingly laconic “I Signed The Line.” And she spends this, her second solo outing as A Camp, delivering droll lyrical punches to the solar plexus against a conversely sunny Spectoresque backdrop (aided by her multi-insrumentalist husband Nathan Larson, among others). To complement her sky-blue singing voice, Persson has a cynical view of the world, exemplified in snarky song titles alone-“It’s Not Easy To Be Human,” “The Weed Had Got There First.” In a chiming “Stronger Than Jesus,” she chirps a humalong chorus of “Don’t you know love is stronger than Jesus? / Don...

“A Camp is Nina Persson of The Cardigans,” read the sticker on A Camp’s 2001 debut, but the music, lyrics, and production on the follow-up, Colonia, are all credited to “A Camp.” Thinly veiled solo project or not, the reason to listen to Colonia is Persson’s smooth voice. She sings directly, without flash or pretension; her only indulgence is a mournful quaver, which she employs with restraint and taste. The overall effect is sincere believability, which is especially helpful when she’s explaining, say, that imaginary gods can’t save you. The album is suffused with defeat: Persson ...

But I think you can use pop to much better things than it sometimes is. "It doesn't (more)...

Persson, who released a self-titled record under the alias A Camp in 2001, claimed that it was too lonely working without a band. "I realised touring the first A Camp that I hate being thought of as a solo artist," she told Teletext. "It's too lonely. I've grown up in a band, and I need people around me."
