Film industry players gathered at Mr. Nakamoto at the Mondrian hotel in Cannes on Monday night to celebrate Universal Pictures International.
As Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh pointed out in his opening remarks, Universal had several big successes this past year, not the least of which was Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which took home seven Oscars. The studio also produced box office hits “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “M3GAN” and “Cocaine Bear,” and is promising a victory lap this year with “The Bikeriders,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Twisters” and “Wicked” on the lineup.
For this reason, Universal Pictures International was awarded Variety‘s international achievement in film award, which was accepted by the company’s president of distribution — international Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.

With his latest film, Kinds Of Kindness, only hitting the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival a few short days ago, Yorgos Lanthimos could've been forgiven for taking a breather to soak up some rays on the French Riviera — but that's just not the Poor Things filmmaker's style. As reported by THR, Lanthimos' next project, sci-fi comedy Bugonia, has been snapped up by Focus Features and Universal. And what's more, his Kinds Of Kindness leads Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are set to star.
As we shared back in February, Lanthimos' next film will be an English-language remake of Joon-Hwan Jang's 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save The Green Planet. The original movie's barmy plot follows a conspiracy-obsessed man who becomes convinced that a number of his homeland's top brass are secretly reptilian alien invaders bent on Earth's destruction, going so far as to abduct several of them in an...

A little while ago, a hot rumor suggested that Emma Stone would be re-teaming with director Yorgos Lanthimos a remake of the South Korean classic, Save the Green Planet. Less than twenty-four hours after the triumphant Cannes premiere of their follow-up to Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness comes official word that the movie is indeed happening. The movie, which is now titled Bugonia, will also re-team Stone with her Kinds of Kindness co-star Jesse Plemons, whose performance in the film is generating awards buzz.
Here’s the official synopsis from distributor Focus Features:
Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
The remake is written by Will Tracy, a writer on HBO’s Succession and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Tracy also co-wrote the genre film The Menu.

Yorgos Lanthimos can’t stop (won’t stop!) working with Oscar winner Emma Stone, casting the actress once again as leading lady for his next project “Bugonia.”
The drama will also star Jesse Plemons who, along with Stone, appears in Lanthimos’ forthcoming “Kinds of Kindness.” That three-chapter feature just premiered on Friday at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Bugonia” follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from heat-seeking “Succession” and “The Menu” writer Will Tracy.
Focus Features has won domestic rights to distribute the project. Universal Pictures will roll out the film in global territories, save Korea where “Parasite” producer Cj Enm will release. The latter is financing the film with Fremantle. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent brokered the rights deal.
This package is loaded with pedigree.

Focus Features has taken worldwide rights to Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest project Bugonia, the remake of South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet, which sees the Greek director reunite yet again with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. The trio are here in Cannes with their Competition title Kinds of Kindness, which had its world premiere Friday.
Focus will release Bugonia in the U.S., with Universal Pictures distributing the title internationally (excluding South Korea). It’s the second deal for Focus Features announced in Cannes this week (Focus picked up Woody Harrelson starrer Last Breath a few days ago), but this one will be a notable coup for the studio given that Lanthimos’ previous Oscar-winning titles The Favourite and Poor Things as well as Cannes contender Kinds of Kindness were all handled by Searchlight for distribution.

Director Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse & The Northman) made a name for himself with The Witch, a film that most directors would be proud to have on their résumé, especially as their first feature-length production.
In the same vein, as artists in any discipline are often especially critical of their earlier work, Eggers also admitted that he did not want to watch this 2015 horror movie. The Witch, the full-length feature debut of the New York City-born director, turned out to be one of his incredible works. The story revolved around a family of New England Puritans in the 1630s.

After receiving positive reviews from critics and grossing $40 million, the film went on to become a critical and commercial success. Nonetheless, Eggers is the one who is unable to stand the movie, which starred Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, and Kate Dickie.

CinemaCon attendees Wednesday got a first look at Focus Features’ second film with Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, a dark and gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her which causes untold horror in its wake.
Introducing the footage, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, “This ain’t your father’s Nosferatu” and promised it will give “new meaning to the term Christmas feast when we open on December 25.”
In the footage, we see the terror and hysteria rampant in the village as various townsfolk shriek, “He is coming” after the young woman calls to him seemingly in a nighttime trance. “My dreams grow darker,” she says, and asks Willem Dafoe’s Professor Von Franz, “Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?”

Bill Skarsgård has become undead bloodsucker Count Orlok for the big screen.
Skarsgård leads Robert Eggers’ long-awaited “Nosferatu,” a reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film. Skarsgård plays the titular villain, with Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the source of Orlok’s obsession. As Orlok tries to seduce her soul, Ellen’s husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save his wife from turning to the dark side.
Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said the film “definitely ain’t your father’s ‘Nosferatu,’ and [Eggers] will definitely bring new meaning to the phrase ‘Christmas feast.’”
The footage Focus premiered at CinemaCon (though not released online today) was as daring and intense as any film Eggers has made, complete with some chilling black and white sequences, a man biting the head off a pigeon, streets teeming with rats, and rooms engulfed in flames, not to mention a truly deafening, bone chilling score.

The audience at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace also saw trailers for Sam-Taylor Johnson’s Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black, and footage from Jeff Nichols’ crime drama The Bikeriders, which premiered in Telluride last year.
“At the core of what we do is the belief that bringing people together makes their lives better by sharing an experience,” Kujawski said by way of introduction.

Edward Berger’s last film, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” won four Academy Awards — including Best International Feature Film — for Netflix. The director’s new epic, “Conclave,” which is set up at Focus Features, may just best that tally.
Attendees at the 2024 CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas got a look at first footage from the film during the Universal Pictures and Focus Features presentation on Wednesday, April 10. A papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, “Conclave” is no doubt an Oscar hopeful for Focus given its November 2024 release date. Having seen the trailer only reinforces the awards play. Give the devil its due: “Conclave” looks good.
When the pope dies, “Conclave” scrambles to find God’s new messenger on Earth. The search turns into a holy war that is anything but holy. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski described the film as a “Machiavellian thriller.

Think the market for adult-focused specialty films is dead? Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, explains why you’re wrong on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.”
As the film biz gathers in Las Vegas this week for CinemaCon, Kujawski, an industry veteran who has headed NBCUniversal’s Focus Features unit since 2016, discusses the state of moviemaking and exhibition and he walks through the key lessons learned from the strike-challenged 2023 box office. Takeaway No. 1 — originality sells.
“The big cultural story of the movies last year was the Barbenheimer effect. Both of those things in their way are unexpected, right? They’re wholly original in terms of conception and execution,” Kujawski says of last year’s summer juggernauts, Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer.” “And they were not only embraced but literally devoured by an audience, right? It’s not every day you see a studio head riding a Harley.
But that’s precisely where you could find Focus Features’ chairman Peter Kujawski on Wednesday night in Downtown Los Angeles at the trailer re-launch for “The Bikeriders.”
Technically, Kujawski was revving the engine of the Harley-Davidson Jumpstart, a ride simulator. But Focus is doing the real work of reviving the awareness campaign for Jeff Nichols’ period drama about a Midwestern motorcycle club, starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy.
After a strong debut at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, the film was poised to make a splash during this year’s Oscar season. But last December, Focus swooped in to acquire the rights for “The Bikeriders” after Disney’s 20th Century Studios removed it from its release schedule amid the SAG-AFTRA strike and New Regency decided to shop the picture elsewhere.

Exclusive: Dominic Sessa, the 21-year-old rising star, didn’t win a Supporting Actor BAFTA Award Sunday night — that went to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr. — but he did pick up his first post-The Holdovers role that will see him starring with Rose Byrne in director Stephanie Laing’s drama Tow.
This news was confirmed by several sources over the BAFTA Awards weekend where your intrepid columnist attended more soirées than is healthy. The trick though is to go teetotal and guzzle down fruit juice: cranberry with a tear-drop of orange juice is the mocktail du jour!
My Deadline colleague, international editor Andreas Wiseman, revealed last week that Byrne is expected to star in the true-story Tow.
Bryne will portray Amanda Ogle, a homeless woman who slept in her 1991 Toyota Camry, who entered into a 369-day legal battle against a towing company that had impounded her car after it had been stolen.

Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.

Pharrell Williams has come a long way from producing music as part of the Neptunes and as part of the rap/rock band N.E.R.D. Williams went on to do some of the most catchy, ear-wormy pop hits that radio and television would play ad nauseam. Pharrell would also break through into movies as he composed music for such films as the Despicable Me movies, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Hidden Figures. Additionally, his pop hits would be all over countless trailers and be featured in movies like Trolls Band Together and Sing 2.

The remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) that’s coming our way from The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers was first announced back in 2015. The project finally went into production earlier this year and wrapped six months ago… but if you were hoping to see Eggers’ Nosferatu sometime in the next few months, we have some disappointing news to share today. The movie is still a year away. Focus Features has announced that they’ll be giving Nosferatu a theatrical release on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, “making it a prime holiday season release.”
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a...

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu will hit US cinemas on the 25th December, but the film currently has no UK date.
Nosferatu is going head to head with Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa for the battle of the Christmas box office with a Christmas Day 2024 release date as reported by Deadline. That’s one heck of a triple bill, but one we are very excited for.
There’s no UK release date currently set for Nosferatu. Both Mufasa and Sonic 3 are in cinemas on 20th December in both US and UK so we can only hope that Nosferatu would also appear on the coveted 26th December release date as UK cinemas will be firmly closed on Christmas Day. We fear the film might get pushed to early 2025 though, but we’re trying to stay positive.

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders,” ending a short period of producer New Regency shopping the finished film to studios. The crime period piece, which premiered at Telluride this fall, was initially set up for an awards-friendly Dec. 1 release by 20th Century Studios, but it was removed from Disney’s calendar last month.
Sources informed Variety that it was New Regency’s decision — not Disney’s — to seek a new distributor. The production company also opted to remove “The Bikeriders” from the Disney calendar due to its actors’ inability to promote the feature, which carries a $40 million production budget, during the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“The Bikeriders” is now eyeing a 2024 release. Focus will handle distribution in North America, while Universal Pictures International has the global rollout.

The Bikeriders has found a new home.
Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to the New Regency movie, which was previously set up at Disney’s 20th Century.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, the movie about a motorcycle club in the 1950s stars Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. It had been been scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 1 after making several stops on the fall festival circuit, including opening the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend.
However, Disney and New Regency subsequently announced that The Bikeriders was being taken off the release calendar. Behind the scenes, insiders say New Regency had been given the go-ahead to take the film elsewhere.
Plans are for Focus to release the film theatrically in 2024. Focus will handle the pic domestically, while Universal Pictures International will have overseas duties.

Universal Pictures may have had some big guns to play with at CinemaCon with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” and David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy,” but its mini-major division, Focus Features, wanted a little bit of the spotlight. Chairman Peter Kujawski took the stage and made the argument that the data shows that specialty business has recovered more than the media narrative thinks it has.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski kicked off the company’s CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday with a rousing speech in which he declared, “The specialty sector are the honey bees of the movie business”.
Kujawski started off noting how Focus and other major specialty distributors did not just recover to 2019 levels, “We recovered better, faster… And while this may be a surprise, it makes sense because we know that specialty films attract the highest percentage of avid moviegoers of any genre. Period.”
He continued, “These are diverse audiences. They are fans of all genres.

CinemaCon continues to dominate the news cycle, and Focus Features is on the main stage this evening alongside Universal Pictures to share details, footage, and trailers for their upcoming slate.
During the presentation, Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features, pushed back the notion that specialty studios are struggling. He says the data shows they’ve bounced back as well or better than anyone else, as they appeal to a hardcore cinema-loving audience. Kujawski says their fans are the people that attend movies multiple times in theaters. He also notes that blockbuster directors like Christopher Nolan, David Gordon Green, Rian Johnson, and more started by directing “specialty films,” They need to keep making those movies to foster the next generation of outstanding filmmakers.
Focus defines itself as a “big tent spciealty,” meaning they don’t limit themselves, and even do franchises like Downton Abbey and Book Club.
