Every time a popular franchise is revived, people tend to wonder if it was ever necessary. In the world of crime dramas, there's no source more popular than Agatha Christie's novels or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. No matter how many times these stories have been told, every producer and director wants to put their own spin on them.
Guy Ritchie tried his hand at Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and 2011, releasing two films, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr. Both movies got decent reviews and a lot of happy viewers, but that wasn't enough. Now Ritchie is back with another project and another Sherlock.
Who Will Be the New Sherlock Holmes?
While the world is still wondering who will be lucky enough to play James Bond, it's not the burning question we should be asking. After the success of Robert Downey Jr.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Around the time Doctor Strange was opening in the fall of 2016, MCU was at its peak with back-to-back iconic action flicks surrounding the titular Avengers characters. However, with all eyes on the upcoming movies, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange faced intense scrutiny and backlash surrounding one controversial decision that was made with the best intentions.
Tilda Swinton and Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange (2016) | Marvel StudiosAccording to reports, it was Tilda Swinton’s casting as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange that faced a public outrage. Since her original Marvel character was an Asian man, Swinton’s casting was met with accusations of whitewashing in Hollywood despite Scott Derrickson’s intentions of avoiding racial stereotypes.

In 2021, Kevin Feige retracted his statement supporting the casting of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange. The character is a Tibetan-born old man in the comics, but the casting of Swinton was criticized as another instance of cultural appropriation of Asian characters. While Feige defended the idea during the film’s production and release, he expressed his regret over the casting decision a few years later.

Feige admitted that the film could’ve taken another direction with the character that remained true to the Asian origin of the character. Despite the criticisms of her casting in the film, Swinton did complete justice to the character and was one of the best performers in the film.

Photo Credit: Netflix The new miniseries Eric is a psychological thriller with some pretty disturbing undertones. It features Benedict Cumberbatch as a puppeteer, while the title character is his seven-foot-tall puppet. (And anyone who remembers the original Twilight Zone TV series knows just how scary the relationship between puppet and puppeteer can be!) Cumberbatch also provides the voice of Eric in the series; at a Netflix Q&a session for Eric, he described how portraying this unique set of characters was both thrilling and scary for him. Eric is a very weird show, and not because Benedict Cumberbatch argues with an imaginary yeti-like animal. It’s weird because the Netflix limited series didn’t need to have the plot centered around Vincent and Edgar at all. The subplot around the investigation being conducted by Michael Ledroit, played brilliantly by McKinley Belcher III, was insightful and relevant enough to be the central plot of the limited series. I don’t know what happened, but the writers’ attempts at linking the search for Edgar and Marlon Rochelle didn’t really work for me. Since they’ve spent enough time on Vincent’s journey, I’m not really interested in giving him and his plot any more attention. Instead, I simply want to focus on Marlon’s murder case and what Ledroit unraveled about the system by sticking to his guns and ensuring Cecile got justice.

In Netflix’s new limited series Eric, Benedict Cumberbatch plays Vincent, the creator of a Sesame Street-like kids’ TV show in 1980s New York City. But alas, there are no sunny days ahead for Vincent.
Thursday’s premiere begins with a distraught Vincent speaking at a press conference, begging his missing son to come home. We then jump back 48 hours, where Vincent’s nine-year-old son Edgar (Ivan Howe) is coloring backstage while Vincent shoots an episode of his puppet-heavy kids’ show Good Day Sunshine. The new Netflix original series Eric tells a compelling story about a father’s realizations and determination against the backdrop of difficult social times in New York City in the 1980s. Set during a time when the spread of HIV/AIDS and homophobia were both on the rise, the six-episode series follows an egoistic puppeteer, Vincent, as he reacts to the sudden disappearance of his young son, Edgar. Vincent, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, is undoubtedly the highlight of the show, although McKinley Belcher III’s determined police detective, Michael Ledroit, is even more enjoyable. Eric successfully delivers a layered and emotional tale and makes for a rather inspiring watch.

“Hacks” set the stage for a scintillating Season 4 (not yet ordered) in the final minutes of “Bulletproof” when Ava (Hannah Einbinder) pulls a trump card over Deborah (Jean Smart). The reigning Best Comedy Series champ feels unbeatable in the top category, especially with Season 3 looming, but perhaps “Hacks” can walk away with other trophies?

Did Furiosa’s Poor Box Office Performance Get Another Mad Mad Movie Shelved? (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After a surprisingly bad debut at the box office, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might have just ruined the chances of any other Mad Max sequels or prequels. As George Miller wrote Fury Road, he also worked on developing Furiosa and The Wastelands. But given the box office performance of Furiosa, it might have put a halt to the next Mad Max movie.
Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally reached the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he can find redemption with his Mad Max films.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the highly regarded director’s film, opened to a poor $32 million domestically over the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million internationally. This set back expectations for Mad Max: The Wasteland,...

While Robert Downey Jr. is known for his portrayal of Iron Man in the MCU, he also portrayed Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of the popular novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The actor reprised his role in the 2011 sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and was also set to appear in a threequel.
Amazon Prime Video announced recently that a series based on Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels would be in development with Guy Ritchie directing. Who is the real monster in Eric? Is it really the big, blue creature trudging around the streets of ’80s New York? Or is it something more insidious bubbling up inside the man who makes him?
In Eric, the limited series created by BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Abi Morgan, monsters are manifestations of fear. Netflix’s Eric about a desperate father battling his own demons on the streets of 1980s New York as he searches for his missing nine-year-old son features Benedict Cumberbatch and a custom-made seven foot puppet, which is visible only to Cumberbatch’s character, the flawed Vincent. Abi Morgan’s six-part series ties together themes of belonging, addiction, loss and police brutality in a familiar setting. It was described as Sesame Street meets Taxi Driver by one British reviewer, although Sister creative chief Jane Featherstone compared it in scope and theme to Steven Spielberg’s Et.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Featherstone said the show is testament to the Chernobyl and This is Going to Hurt studio’s commitment to taking a talent-first approach.

The real monster in Eric, the emotional thriller from playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan, isn’t a big, blue beast. It’s something much more sinister.
The series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a puppeteer named Vincent looking for his missing young son in ’80s Manhattan, explores the scourges of structural inequity, the AIDS epidemic, white collar crime, and addiction terrorizing the city.

Benedict Cumberbatch is finally back on the small screen with an original mystery drama miniseries created by Abi Morgan. Struggling with substance abuse Vincent convinces himself that he will be reunited with Edgar with the help of a seven-foot-tall puppet created by his son before he disappeared.
Eric is too many things at once sometimes it’s true crime, sometimes it’s a detective thriller, sometimes it’s social realism, and the rest of the time it’s just Vincent hallucinating a seven-foot-tall blue monster and somehow all of it works. We have to praise BAFTA and Emmy winner Morgan (The Iron Lady) for creating such an intense dramatic series with so many themes coming up organically in a story that draws you in...

After months of almost complete silence, the Knives Out franchise makes a grand comeback to the news field with lots of pretty exciting updates.
Last week, Netflix finally dropped the first teaser for the franchise’s third installment that is now titled Wake Up Dead Man and will presumably cover Benoit Blanc’s most dangerous case ever. Fans haven’t even had enough time to explore the teaser and find some Easter eggs when the upcoming movie suddenly got its cast ensemble and once again broke the news.
Apart from all the other actors, Wake Up Dead Man will feature a major star, and his previous big roles may become some sort of hint for what he will be like in the future film.
According to Variety’s reports, Wake Up Dead Man has just added Andrew Scott to its main cast, which already includes The Crown’s Josh O’Connor and Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny.

There’s something so frustrating about watching a show that should work but can’t quite figure out how to put its puzzle pieces together. Sometimes, the pieces just don’t fit. That’s the experience for the bulk of the six episodes of Netflix’s “Eric,” a drama that tries to do so many different things that it ends up doing too little of any of them. Its most fatal flaw might be that its conceit never feels thematically engaging, distracting from what works best about the show, a series of excellent performances that work on a scene-by-scene basis but never come together to form an effective show overall.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson helmed the first Doctor Strange back in 2016. The noted horror filmmaker, who was known for his film Sinister handled the first live-action depiction of the Sorcerer Supreme in the MCU. The film received positive responses around the world and was a commercial success, earning $677 million at the global box office.
While Derrickson did a great job with the film, he left the sequel after working on it for a while due to creative differences. Recently, a fan posted a nice detail about the first film which proved why the MCU was great back in the day and why Kevin Feige seemed to have forgotten the kind of creators that were involved in its making.

Plot: Vincent, one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of the hugely popular children’s television show, ‘Good Day Sunshine,’ struggles to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar, becoming increasingly distressed and volatile. Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behaviour alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
Review: The idea behind Eric, as depicted in the trailer for the series, is a fascinating concept. A man driven to the edge of sanity after the disappearance of his son bonds with an imaginary monster created by his child to rescue him.

It’s been almost two years since the release of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, marking the character’s last appearance in the MCU with significant consequences. Although an alternate version of Strange appeared in ‘What If…?’ Season 2, that storyline ended tragically, making it unlikely we’ll see that variant in future installments.
While ‘Doctor Strange 3’ hasn’t been officially announced by Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige mentioned at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con that there’s ample room in the release schedule for Phase 6 projects. However, recent developments in the MCU suggest a different trajectory.
As per Marvel Updates, ‘Doctor Strange 3’ is currently in the works, with the studio intending to reintroduce Dormammu, a prominent villain from the series.
In this installment, Dormammu will make a comeback in a different guise, while the movie will explore deeper into Clea’s background. Marvel Studios is eyeing Sam Raimi to direct,...

The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Patrick Melrose is a vortex of emotional attacks that leaves you crumbling by the end of the series. Based on the semi-autobiographical novels by author Edward St. Aubyn, the limited series brings to life a story about abuse, compassion, rage, and closure in the most entertaining way possible. The series, which came out in 2018, details the story of a man named Patrick Melrose from 1982 to 2005. Despite its dated nature, the series is quite relevant both in terms of its story and its engrossing dialogue. The show puts an addicted man at its forefront and explores the nature of his addiction through childhood trauma, loss, grief, and suffering. The directors of the show love irony almost as much as the character himself, which makes the show bearable despite its horrendous themes. The show begins with Patrick at his lowest, with the death of his father leaving him elated,...

It's no surprise that there isn't a single war movie that's easy to watch. Still, these films are usually adored by both critics and audiences.
First, they require a great deal of technical skill to make. Second, the amount of thought that goes into the set and costume design cannot go unnoticed. And third, the actors tend to shine the brightest in the face of dramatic dialogue and heartbreaking scenes, and there is no shortage of those when it comes to war.
If you're craving a good war movie, but don't have anything specific in mind, Netflix is ready to help with a new addition to its library.
Is 1917 Worth Watching?
Unlike many war movies, 1917 takes viewers back to World War I, not a few decades later. This alone sets 1917 apart from many other films in the genre, giving it a unique setting and rare insight into the events.

Benedict Cumberbatch is back on the small screen. Eric is an original new mystery surrounding the disappearance of a nine-year-old boy; the real mystery, though, is how anyone convinced Netflix to make this show at all. That's not to say Eric is bad — in fact, it's one of the most original Netflix Originals in some time.
Mixing true crime and social realism with hallucinations of a giant blue monster isn't an easy sell, but BAFTA and Emmy winner Abi Morgan deftly weaves in Vincent's delusions, folding in everything from homelessness and systemic racism to police corruption and the AIDS epidemic in an organically realised vision of '80s New York.
