To put it simply — and, yes, gratefully — “Phoenix, Oregon” is the sort of movie a lot of us need right now. It’s an undemandingly enjoyable and reassuringly predictable dramedy in which nothing, not even the sourball attitudes of its comically unpleasant malcontents, ever is allowed to get out of hand or unduly strain credibility. But it also is too playfully spiky and unaffectedly down-to-earth to come across as bland pablum.
The actors are well-cast, and almost all of them are as engaging as their roles can allow. (One of the aforementioned malcontents actually turns out to the polar opposite of a poor loser.) In short, this well-crafted indie is a thoroughly pleasant trifle that can provide VOD diversion more comforting than a cup of tea during these trying times. And if that doesn’t sound appealing, well, that’s Ok: Some people simply don’t like tea.

Oscar Issac and Ben Affleck star in Jc Chandor's watchable Netflix actioner, Triple Frontier, but we've seen a lot of it before.
This review comes from Den of Geek UK.
Another Jc Chandor film, another potted take on masculinity in crisis. Margin Call (2011) was about crooked Wall Street traders, All is Lost (2013) concentrated on a solo sailor fighting a losing battle against the ocean and A Most Violent Year (2014) concerned a harassed businessman’s territorial struggles against mobsters and rivals. While these films are all of a fine standard, Jessica Chastain’s performance in the latter aside, there’s rarely a meaningful role for a woman.
Now, Chandor turns his gaze towards South America and what sleazy Carter Burke in Aliens would undoubtedly call “very tough hombres”: a crew of five former Us special forces soldiers who plan to steal many millions of dollars from a drug lord in an unnamed country.

With this guys-on-a-mission-blowout, Netflix proves it can grind out generic action as well as the next Hollywood formula hacks. Triple Frontier — which Netflix will release in theaters for five minutes (Ok, for seven days) before streaming to its nearly 140 million subscribers on March 13th — involves a handful of rogue ex-military types who decide to rob a drug cartel. That means the bad guys are really bad and nobody cares how violently they die. Our inglorious bastards, on the other hand, are patriots with big hearts momentarily sidetracked by greed. The...

Five Special Forces veterans unleash U.S. fury at the border area of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, otherwise known as the Triple Frontier, in J.C. Chandor’s entertaining if familiar morality tale. Checking off a few boxes in the Netflix algorithm and no doubt relevant to our cartel age, the story is one part getting the band back together, one part Donald Rumsfeldian get-rich-quick scheme, and one part The Treasure of Sierra Madre. If you’re looking for more nuanced artistic fare, add Happy as Lazzaro to your queue. Triple Frontier is at its best when it is simply five guys bro-ing out with machine guns. How compelling that sounds to a viewer will be a strong indicator of whether it’s worth clicking play.
The group of veterans are lured back into the game by Santiago (Oscar Isaac), the only one of the five still in the field.

"We finally get to use our skills for our own benefit..." "Alright - let's do it." Not to be confused with Triple Threat, a different action film with a very similar name. Netflix has debuted the second official trailer for the action film Triple Frontier, about Special Forces team pulling off a crazy heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. This was in the works with Kathryn Bigelow directing for a while but finally got made at Netflix with Chandor instead. The screenplay is by Mark Boal, who worked with Bigelow on The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Triple Frontier stars an impressive ensemble cast including Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Helund, Pedro Pascal, plus Adria Arjona, Sheila Vand, Christine Horn, and Reynaldo Gallegos. "There is no ground support... You cannot go back to your normal life after tonight." Netflix has debuted the first trailer for Triple Frontier, an action film involving Special Forces pulling off a special heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. This project has been in development for years, and was being developed as the next film from Kathryn Bigelow. The screenplay is by Mark Boal, who worked with Bigelow on The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, and is now partnered with director J.C. Chandor. Dog Eat Dog aims to be your next pulpy criminal obsession, but falls short upon feeling forced into underworld seediness. There’s inherent fun thanks to magnificent character actors like Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe, yet director Paul Schrader struggles to temper depravity with meaning. Audiences find themselves stuck in a cyclical circle of prisoner’s lament, where the worst of the worst happens just because. Look no farther than Schrader’s introduction – the double murder of a mother and her moody teen. Why? “Because That’S The Kind Of Movie This Is, Motherf(#Ker” is what Schrader’s tone conveys – sometimes for the best, but never without pause.
Nic Cage stars as Troy Cameron, a low-budget criminal who’s sick of tiny scores. After yet another good-enough win, he’s offered a $750K payday by Grecco The Greek (Paul Schrader). The job is simple – kidnap a baby until the father pays his debts,...

I have a lot of time for the school of thought that suggests that you get out of a film only what you bring to it in the first place. I think this is particularly relevant for films that portray real life events and perhaps even more so for films that pertain to real life events that are relatively recent. American Sniper is Clint Eastwood’s depiction of the life of Chris Kyle, who became the deadliest sniper in Us history during the Iraq war. After seeing the film, I did a little reading around the subject and discovered Kyle to be a rather more controversial subject than you might expect based solely on the film.

The relevant recommendation for Fox‘s new series, Gang Related, may begin and end with the knowledge that it is created/written by Chris Morgan. If the writing abilities that brought you the last five Fast & Furious films, Wanted, and 47 Ronin has left you impressed, you’re all set. Lock in to your new favorite show now.
If that fact alone doesn’t mean much to you, the show obligingly lays all its cards on the table in the first fifteen minutes of the pilot. You only have to invest that amount of time to know exactly what’s coming your way, I imagine for the entirety of the show’s run, but at least for the first few episodes. The show, and you have to give it some credit really, puts it out there and says, “Look, you’re in, or you’re out.”

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.
