One of the many treats headed our way on Friday the 13th is the new Peacock series “John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams,” an unscripted series that features an episode directed by Carpenter himself. "I know that house, and I know what it's capable of." Peacock has unveiled a quick 60-second official trailer for their Halloween streaming series called John Carpenter's Suburban Screams - out in October (obviously). After releasing the two new Halloween movies directly streaming on Peacock, the service has now partnered with Carpetner to let him develop his own horror anthology series - basically the same thing Netflix did with Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. "Each episode will delve into the monstrous evil that lurks beneath the surface of friendly suburbia through the lens of one frightful tale... In addition to firsthand accounts, the episodes will include cinematic reenactments, personal archives, and historic town press coverage." One description says this is like Unsolved Mysteries from John Carpenter, with dramatic recreations. Scary! Episodes by John Carpenter, Michelle Latimer, Jan Pavlacky, Jordan Roberts. It's been 13 years since horror master John Carpenter has blessed the world with a new directorial project, but the icon behind movies like "Halloween," "Escape From New York," and "The Thing" is finally returning to our screens this autumn — with a documentary-like TV horror series. "John Carpenter's Suburban Screams" will feature six nerve-shredding true stories retold by those who experienced them, and will couple the testimony with dramatic (and decidedly scary-looking) visual retellings of the story. The show is also set to include archival footage and news clips.
Carpenter is only set to direct one of the six episodes of "Suburban Screams," but he's involved in the project in other ways, lending his considerable talents as a composer to its soundtrack and executive producing the Peacock project. The show sounds like it will meet at the intersection of reality and horror movie sensibilities, which could be the perfect recipe for some great scares.

“John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams,” a docuseries about horrific real-life tales of terror that happened in the seemingly perfect American suburbs, will premiere with all six episodes Oct. 13 on Peacock, the streamer announced Thursday.
Per the press release, “Each episode will delve into the monstrous evil that lurks beneath the surface of friendly suburbia through the lens of one frightful tale. In addition to firsthand accounts, the episodes will include cinematic reenactments, personal archives, and historic town press coverage.”
In the first trailer for the series, we get insight from police, survivors and witnesses about bizarre cases, including the hair-raising line: “In one night, police fielded more than 50 calls about a man in a rabbit suit with a hatchet.”
That episode was inspired by the 1970 reports of “The Bunny Man” in Clifton, Virginia. Often regarded as an urban legend, he was reported to brandish different types of weapons in various sightings.

It was just a few months ago that John Carpenter proudly proclaimed a return to the director’s chair. In his case a couch: a new series entitled John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams was shot in Prague while the man worked from home, which he summarily described as “awesome.” While it wasn’t certain what, exactly, he was talking about, today we have a trailer for the project: a six-episode Peacock series for which he helmed an episode, composed the theme, and produced..
Though brief, the preview gives a sense of Suburban Screams‘ unusual approach: a true-crime series with every episode centered “on one true tale of terror, told by the real people who lived through it. Their firsthand accounts are brought to life through premium cinematic scene-work, news clips, home photos, and archival footage.” Contained therein is also traces of Carpenter’s new theme, and, boy, does it sound like him.

Camerimage, the festival in Toruń, Poland dedicated to the art of cinematography, handed out its prestigious Frog prizes this evening. The big winner was “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher, who won the top prize, the Golden Frog, in addition to the Audience Prize. The Bronze Frog was awarded to “The Painted Bird” Dp Vladimír Smutný, while “The Two Popes” Dp César Charlone won the Silver Frog. A full list of winners at the end of this article.
Now in its 27th year, Camerimage has become homecoming week for cinematographers from around the globe, with a vast number of the best DPs, past and present, in attendance. From an awards perspective — considering cinematographers nominate their colleagues — it’s hard to overestimate the value of DPs presenting their work and discussing their craft with their tight-knit community during the week-long celebration.

Sundance premiere Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am begins its theatrical run in several New York and L.A. theaters today via Magnolia Pictures. Filmmaker/photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders directed the doc about the Nobel laureate, whom he had known for years. Young actor Jacob Tremblay has a Seth Rogen-produced comedy, Good Boys, set for August, but first he will be on the big (and small) screen this weekend with Burn Your Maps, starring opposite Vera Farmiga, bowing in a day and date release. Jessie Buckley, meanwhile, goes country in Neon’s Wild Rose, which debuted out of last year’s Toronto. The title plays New York and L.A. ahead of an expanded roll out to other major markets next weekend.
Other limited releases set for their launches today include Sundance Selects doc, The Quiet One following the three-decaf career of The Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman as well as Metrograph Pictures’ second release,...

“Burn Your Maps” is one of those movies that’s glib and facile and threadbare all the way through, then the ending sort of gets to you (you’d have to be made of pretty stern stuff if it didn’t), so you think back over what you’ve seen — and it’s still a crock. The writer-director, Jordan Roberts, seems drawn like a magnet to overly manipulative feel-good genres. This is another of those dramas about a couple who have lost a young child, and it’s ripping them apart, but watching them go through the motions of a healing that won’t take, the audience feels just about as removed from their pain as they are.

"What brings you to Mongolia?" Vertical Entertainment has debuted a new trailer for an indie adventure comedy titled Burn Your Maps, from writer/director Jordan Roberts. This first premiered at film festivals back in late 2016, and has taken three years to finally get an actual Us release. No idea why, but this trailer might give you a hint that it's just not all that. Burn Your Maps is about a family in emotional turmoil that is taken by surprise when an eccentric 8-year-old American boy, Wes, has an existential epiphany - he believes that he is in fact a Mongolian goat herder. So they travel to Mongolia and things get even crazier, of course. Jacob Tremblay stars with Vera Farmiga, and a cast including Virginia Madsen, Marton Csokas, Jason Scott Lee, Suraj Sharma, Arielle Rombough, Ramon Rodriguez, and Glynis Davies. This looks cute but also awkward and just strange, not...

Chicago – The poster is what gives away “Megan Leavey” the most. The titular soldier, and her bomb-sniffing dog, below a billowing American flag. So which war is it? Why, it’s the Iraq invasion, where the U.S. military and the politicians at home “freed” the Iraqi citizens from a peaceful life. Making a dog story out of that boondoggle doesn’t make it any more palatable, except to “support the troops.”
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Eventually the film feels like propaganda, because it takes aways all the nastiness of war – and its heinous injuries – and reduces it to platitudes about a girl and her dog. This is based-on-truth, as they say, and adding in uncomfortable working class scenarios about the soldier’s family can’t save the observation that the film is exploitative regarding the real Megan’s life. Surprisingly, there was a similar film about a bomb-sniffing dog in Iraq called...

The news that 20th Century Fox were bringing back the Predator following a critically disappointing Robert Rodriguez rebootquel in 2010 was something of a surprise. Then Shane Black’s name became attached and interest in the project was suddenly elevated. Black’s The Nice Guys was an unsung hero of last year’s cinematic offerings, and the man has a keen eye and ear for making good movies. The news today that he has secured the services of Room’s Jacob Tremblay for a lead role makes a lot of sense given Black’s previous films, in which a young actor often made a real difference to the tone, and success, of the movies.

Many films deal with the aftermath of a family death by becoming about how their characters live with the pain — it changing them into different people. Some distinctly show them living despite it instead. Rather than depict Connor (Marton Csokas) and Alise (Vera Farmiga) as the death of their baby girl just ten months prior consumes them, Jordan Roberts’ Burn Your Maps portrays their desire to move on after their transformations are complete. They’re searching for a future they hope exists but cannot yet see. They’ve dealt with grief already (at least they’re frustrated enough to believe they have), so now it’s time to embrace the life that remains. While their son Wes (Jacob Tremblay) readies for what this entails, we’re still uncertain if they are too.
But don’t think this story is one steeped in heavy drama from start to finish without room to breathe.

The Toronto International Film Festival is mere weeks from kicking off, yet the annual fall fest is showing zero sign of slowing down when it comes to announcing the titles that will round out this year’s event. Today’s announcement brings with it a number of Cannes favorites, including Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake,” Olivier Assayas’ divisive Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Julieta.”

Auteurs working within the confines of the studio system tend to disappoint, though we try to keep hope alive by anticipating the best for talented directors braving compromised visions. 2015 wasn’t without its fair share of standout studio fare, particularly with George Miller’s comeback for Mad Max: Fury Road, Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Inarritu’s The Revenant, and J.J. Abram’s revitalization of Star Wars. Of course, there were just as many disappointments, including David Gordon Green’s Our Brand is Crisis and the Wachowski Siblings’ rather derivative Jupiter Ascending. While a couple items from our top 25 studio list last year were held over, we’ve noted a bright clutch of hopeful auteur items to look forward to in 2016. You’ll notice a common theme among our top items, including supernatural or extraterrestrial elements.

If you saw Disney's animated superhero flick Big Hero 6 last year, then you've already seen the adorable short film that preceded it from the feature's co-head of animation, Patrick Wilson (no, not the actor). Feast was a lovely, charming tale of a Boston terrier named Winston through whom we see various stages of his owner’s life, specifically at meal time. It's a unique perspective for the short story, and it's greatly affecting and moving. Now Disney has released a quick making of featurette that's just over a minute long as to how the story went from storyboard to pre-visualization to final animation. There's even footage of a real Boston terrier used as reference for the animators. We'd love to see more of the process though. Watch now! Here's the making-of featurette for Walt Disney Animation's short Feast from Variety: Big Hero 6 is co-directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh...

Disney mines the Marvel Comics back catalogue for its latest animation Big Hero 6, a delightfully entertaining East/West genre blend that's a neat addition to the ever-expanding superhero genre. Think of it as an Avengers aimed at tweens.
The story takes place in the fictional future city of San Fransokyo where Hiro (Ryan Potter), a 14-year-old tech whizz, and his brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) live with their Aunt Cass (Maya Rudolph). Hiro is directionless and constantly running into trouble, but through his older brother he begins to develop his interest in robotics.

Cursory Wikipedia research suggests that Disney’s latest animated feature bears little resemblance to the Marvel property on which it is based. Which is fine; feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there’s exactly a horde of Big Hero 6 fans to outrage. Disney’s film is certainly a lot more cutesy than the source material. At no point does Baymax, the movie’s inflatable, medical robot, transform into a ‘battle dragon’. Rather, he is the creation of Tadashi Hamada, a university student who tragically dies in a fire shortly before successfully inspiring his younger brother, Hiro, to make more of his outrageous...

It's no secret that Disney loves putting easter eggs referencing their previous films in all their animated projects, and Big Hero 6 is no exception. And since the production of Frozen overlapped with the Marvel comic book adaptation, there are a few little nods to the monstrous musical hit in the film. Of course, there are many more easter eggs to be found in the film outside of Frozen, and you'll be able to track them all down when the film hits Digital HD & Disney's Movies Anywhere service on February 3rd followed by the Blu-ray Combo Pack on February 24th. But for now, check out the Frozen easter eggs in the video below! Here's the Frozen easter eggs from Disney's Big Hero 6 from Disney Anywhere: However, I have a feeling there's more, since there's also this Frozen easter egg as well. We all know that Wolverine loves to sing and dance when he's not busy hogging all the spotlight in the X-Men movies, and now there's word that his next opportunity to prance around with a magical tune or two is coming together. While it's taken some time to get all of the pieces in place, Hugh Jackman's turn as P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman on Earth looks to be heading into production next summer.
The film will tell the tale of how legendary promoter Barnum, essentially, invented show business with his three-ring circus. The film will be the first movie musical not adapted from a stage show since 2001's Moulin Rouge. It'll feature original songs by Justin Paul, Benj Pasek, Bonnie McKee, Jake Shear and Brian Lapin, work off of a script from Bill Condon, Jenny Bicks and Jordan Roberts, and be directed by Michael Gracie.

Rare: Movie musicals. Very rare: Original movie musicals. Basically non-existent: Original, live-action movie musicals. What was once the bread and butter of Hollywood’s studio system is basically the ambler-encased mosquito in "Jurassic Park." If anyone could revive that dino DNA into a brand new behemoth, it’s Hugh Jackman. He’ll do just that next summer, when he begins shooting the long-gestating "Greatest Showman on Earth." Attached to the project since 2009, "The Greatest Showman on Earth" will star Jackman as P.T. Barnum, in a story loosely based on the circus pioneer’s life story. The film is touted as a full-fledged musical, with a song-and-dance score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the twenty-something duo behind TV’s "Smash" and Broadway’s recent "A Christmas Story: The Musical." Bill Condon and Jenny Bicks and Jordan Roberts ("The Big C") worked on previous drafts of the script, but Jonathan Tropper...

Monumental Pictures, the film and TV production shingle hung by Alison Owen and Debra Hayward in September, has acquired screen rights to How To Build A Girl, the bestseller written by Caitlin Moran. The fourth book by broadcaster, TV critic and Times columnist Moran was published in the UK by Ebury Press in July and by Harper Collins in the U.S. in September. It has sold over half a million copies and charts the journey of teenager Johanna Morrigan, who reinvents herself as Dolly Wilde: a fast-talking, lady sex-adventurer who moves to London and gets a job as music critic in the hope of saving her poverty stricken family. The producers call the Morrigan character “one of the great female literary icons” on a par with Elizabeth Bennett and Bridget Jones.

Exclusive: The newly formed Monumental Pictures has signed on for the big-screen adaptation of Caitlin Moran’s bestseller How To Build A Girl.
Alison Owen and Debra Hayward’s new London-based production company Monumental Pictures is planning a big-screen version of Caitlin Moran’s bestselling novel How To Build A Girl.
The deal marks the first acquisition for Monumental.
Famed columnist Moran tells a somewhat autobiographical story in the tale of Wolverhampton-born teenager Johanna Morrigan, who moves to London and reinvents herself as an adventurous, sexually adventurous music critic.
Moran and John Niven are adapting the book.
“Caitlin Moran is the wittiest writer on the planet and her creation, Johanna Morrigan stands alongside Elizabeth Bennet and Bridget Jones as one of the great female literary icons,” said Owen.
“We want to make commercial movies and television with strong female characters. We can’t wait to bring Johanna to the big screen.”

Written by Robert L. Baird, Daniel Gerson & Jordan Roberts
Directed by Don Hall & Chris Williams
USA, 2014
If kids needed their own version of the Guardians of the Galaxy, they now have it in Big Hero 6. Hopelessly irreverent with an emphasis on brain over brawn, this gang of self-appointed heroes is poised to launch a lucrative animated action franchise. Not even the derivative plot points can detract from the visual mastery and goofy fun of Disney’s first foray into the Marvel universe. Kids will demand multiple viewings of Big Hero 6 because it delivers the action, the gags, and a genuine emotional connection to this “walking marshmallow” and his nerdy pals.
The reason why Marvel succeeds while other superhero franchises fail is because they never skimp on story. They know the action may put people in the seats, but the memorable characters will keep them coming back for more.

Disney's Big Hero 6 is entirely tolerable while at the same time 100% mediocre. I enjoyed myself enough during the film's 108-minute running time, but as soon as I left the theater memories of what I'd seen began to fade. It's essentially a cinematic candy bar, enjoyable while consuming, but when you're done you're debating the value of feasting on it in the first place. It hits all the right beats, a little sweet on the outside with bits of substance on the inside, but like any piece of candy you've had before, this movie hits all the standard story beats, never really feeling new or fresh, but more like the same old product in a new wrapper... In 3D!!!! Considering Big Hero 6 is a Disney movie you know at least one parent is going to be dead once we meet the film's lead character, Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter), a 14-year-old robotics prodigy.

Big Hero 6
Directed by Dan Hall and Chris Williams
Written by Robert L. Baird, Jordan Roberts and Daniel Gerson
USA, 2014
Loosely inspired by an obscure series of Marvel comics, Disney’s Big Hero 6 is here to firmly shut the door on Let It Go’s last dying breath with an unlikely origin story that merges the emotional core we’ve come to expect from the House of Mouse, with a splashy, manga-like aesthetic and millenial sensibility. From the vibrant cosmopolitan mash-up San Fransokyo, where the story takes place, to the technologic conundrum of research development versus sale for immediate gain that protagonist Hiro (Ryan Potter) faces, Big Hero 6 weaves together a compelling futuristic adventure comedy with surprising deftness.
Hiro is a messy-haired, hoody-wearing fourteen year-old high school graduate who, initially, squanders his smarts building robots and entering them in illegal fights. His older and more polished brother...

One of the things that fanboys asked the moment Marvel was sold to Disney was, "Does this mean we'll see Pixar superhero movies?" With Brad Bird currently working on a screenplay for "The Incredibles 2," Pixar has no need to get into the Marvel business, and Marvel's live-action movies are so successful that I can't really imagine them handling over a viable franchise to an animated division. Walt Disney Feature Animation was given permission to go through Marvel's vast catalog of characters to see if there was anything in there that they might spark to, anything they could make their own, and when they found "Big Hero 6," an obscure team book created by Duncan Rouleau (aka "Man Of Action") and Steven T. Seagle, they found their way in. Right now, it feels like Wdfa is on a roll. You can divide the history of Disney animation into eras, and...
