About a week ago an interesting viral-marketing “teaser” for a short film titled "Mech: Human Trials" surfaced all over the interwebs. It appeared under the guise of a PSA warning people against the use of a new street drug known as Mech. The drug is supposed to speed up recovery, but things seem too good to be true for the unfortunate users.
This week the short film by director Patrick Kalyn went live online. In the six-minute short we see Luke, played by Steve Baran, beginning to lose touch with humanity as he is consumed by the drug. The side-effects of Mech apparently include destroying human tissue and replacing it with mechanics. He begins a search for the mysterious suppliers of the drug in order to try to save himself before he becomes more machine than man.
I had the pleasure of talking with the director of the film, who...

"Once you start, there's no going back." Awesome. Fire up this short film from filmmaker Patrick Kalyn, debuting a dark and exciting new sci-fi short titled Mech: Human Trials. Good news, it has already been optioned for a Hollywood feature, with Black List writer Mike Le adapting the script for Patrick Kalyn to direct, reports The Wrap. The short, running only 5 minutes, has just debuted online in full and it's a must watch - for only five minutes, this packs a punch, and I really want to see more from it already. As always, I love featuring great short films like this, especially when they're original sci-fi. This is also a great primer for William Eubank's The Signal, if I might say, which Focus is putting out in theaters in June. Check this out! Here's an exciting and fun sci-fi alien short film written and directed by Patrick Kalyn called Hybrids. The story follows an ex-special forces soldier who "seeks revenge after losing her daughter at the hands of an alien infestation." I like how the film turned out! It was entertaining. It had a decent story, solid production value, and the special effects were done really well. Kalyn had this to say about the movie in a statement:
I've been a visual effects artist for the last decade and have worked Avatar, District 9 and King Kong to name a few. The short is pretty VFX heavy as you could imagine. Triton Films produced, we shot this thing for no money. It was a labour of love... blood, sweat and tears for the last 10 months for everyone involved."

"352 days since their arrival." There's another new sci-fi short film that just hit the web that many folks are flipping over already. I've received numerous emails linking me to this film Hybrids, an 8-minute science fiction alien action/revenge short written & directed by Patrick Kalyn. It stars Daniella Evangelista as a badass warrior girl who fights her way through a number of blue-blooded alien creatures, with weapons. It's pretty cool for something made for nearly nothing and is the directing debut of Kalyn, a visual effects artist on films like Avatar, District 9 and King Kong hoping to make this his big debut. It's worth a watch below. From Vimeo: An ex-special forces soldier seeks revenge after losing her daughter at the hands of an alien infestation. The film was written & directed by Patrick Kalyn, with cinematography by Cliff Hokanson and music by Sam Hulick, produced by Gabriel Paul Napora & Triton Films.

We see a lot of shorts from amateur filmmakers, but not many have sweet visuals and paramilitary guys fighting a crazy gun-covered beast bot. So Somnolence definitely deserves a look for that, at the very least. The sci-fi flavored sequence, from writer/director Patrick Kalyn and producer Gabriel Napora, was put together as a proof of concept for a feature. Given the quality, don't be surprised to hear more about these guys and/or the project. Slick stuff. The synopsis for the planned...
