In a stark debut from Leo Leigh, Maggie O’Neill meets a mysterious biker and discovers his son is a narcissistic YouTuber and wannabe dancer
This bleak, stark debut feature from writer-director Leo Leigh bears the obvious influences of his parents Mike Leigh and Alison Steadman; it has a barbed cartoony unhappiness, a depiction of its characters verging on caricature and misanthropy but not quite, and the notes of redemption offered at the end are ambiguous. It is not a theatre of cruelty so much as a theatre of mockery; a world where a lot of the time absurd people are laughing at the absurdity of others, partly – but not wholly – because of how unhappy they are.
Leigh allows us to see how the tonal sourness challenges the adjective in the title. Maggie O’Neill plays Sue, a woman who runs a (depressing) children’s party shop hiring out balloons and banners,...

Vlogs where 'Jackass meets Foreign Correspondent' are internet success story
The film begins in bright sunshine above a patch of ocean, before the camera dips into the underwater world below. A few seconds later a shark cuts through the green gloom, its underbelly and dorsal fin identifying it as a Great White.
What takes your breath away, is not just the proximity to one of humankind's potential predators, but that the clip was shot by a California surfer who had spotted two of the creatures the previous day and then opted to go back with his camera.
"Great White cojones!" is just one comment by fans of the video, made by Chuck Patterson, which was posted on Vimeo, one of the alternative self-publishing websites that have sprung up since YouTube became the undisputed online power in video.
Last month, a 90-second video showing baby sloths in Costa Rica, posted on the same high-definition site,...

Leo Leigh, son of Mike, is the latest in a burst of directorial scions to be making names for themselves
Leo Leigh, the 28-year-old son of Mike Leigh, is grim-faced when his dad's name crops up in conversation. "Who?" he says, impatiently. "Yeah, yeah, fine." When he gets going, though, Leigh – whose documentary, Swansea Love Story, is released online this week – chats away merrily about his childhood. One of his early memories is being on the set of Life is Sweet, which featured his mum, Alison Steadman; a makeup artist gave him and his brother Toby fake burns. He reckons he learned more about lighting in half an hour watching cinematographer Dick Pope shoot a scene on Vera Drake than he did in three years of film school: "It's the best free education ever."
As for Swansea Love Story, it's a thoughtful and depressing film about young heroin addicts, starring...

Cheap Thrills, Double Bills, London
A reminder of the days when a trip to the cinema offered great value, with a full second feature instead of some trailers and an "ironic" ad for Orange, this season offers a chance for buffs to fill in the blanks on the CVs of stars such as Christopher Lee and Diana Dors – both in Penny And The Pownall Case – or directors such as Hammer's Terence Fisher, whose To The Public Danger is being shown. There are some rare gems to be found here: cheap, cheerful dramas/thrillers that give exploitation topics a polite, British spin.
