We're less than two weeks away from the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, and convention organizers have finally released the schedule for the first day of programing. You can find the full schedule on comic-con.org [1], or after the jump I've listed the film and television highlights, which includes the Masters of the Web panel which I've been invited to be a panelist on (In full disclosure, I've been asked to be on this panel for a few years now, but I've only just recently gotten over my fear of speaking in front of large audiences). It should be a fun panel, and I hear they will be giving away some really cool prizes as well. We haven't mentioned the Berlinale at all in the heat of Oscar week. So let's do that, shall we? Better late than never. The festival closes tomorrow but the awards were handed out over the past two days.
"Nader and Simin: A Separation" Golden Bear
Asghar Fahradi, who got a lot of Oscar buzz a couple years back (though no nomination) for About Elly, won this year's Golden Bear for Nader & Simin: A Separation (2011). The Hollywood Reporter explains the film like so.
Farhadi's drama traces the breakup of a Iranian family set against the political tensions in Tehran. While not overtly political, Nader and Simin is starkly critical of conditions in Iran, notably the country's huge class divide. It was widely tipped to win Berlin's top prize, not least because of the current upheaval in the Middle East.

Rumours has it that Warner Bros., an American major production studio, is preparing another film based on the cult fighting video game Mortal Kombat.
In fact, a short film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth has been released online. According to George Roush, a folk over at LatinoReview.com, this short is a test video shot for Warner Bros.
Thus, the test video, which was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, is under review at Warner Bros. before the film project for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth gets any funding. Besides, unlike the previous Mortal Kombat films (i.e. Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation), Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is likely to be as gory as the video games it's based on.
See it for yourself.
Finally, here are the actors appearing in this short:
* Jacks is played by Michael Jai White.
* Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan.
* Baraka is played by Lateef Crowder.

Yesterday, almost eight-minute mysterious trailer for Mortal Kombat appeared on Youtube thanks to MortalKombatRebirth. Latinoreview confirmed it is a test video shot for Warner Brothers to get funding for a new Mortal Kombat film.
It centers on Jax trying to convince a shadowy figure to enter the Mortal Kombat tournament and kill vicious psychopaths Baraka, Reptile, and other murderers that are participating. It’s a “real-world” approach so Reptile is actually the victim of a rare hereditary disease and Baraka is a doctor who went mad and inserted giant blades into his arms.
The cast includes Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion)

Speculation has been rife about what Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a glossy short film recently posted anonymously on YouTube, is actually for.Latino Review have the answer: it's a test video, produced by Warner Bros and directed by Kevin Tancharoen (the Fame remake), designed to prove the potential for an R-rated reboot of the videogame franchise, originally brought to us in PG-13 form in the mid-90s by Paul Ws Anderson. In its current form, Rebirth shares a lot with the Dtv sequels to Walter Hill's Undisputed: Michael Jai-White (as Jax) starred in Undisputed 2, and Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and fight choreographer Larnell Stovall are both Undisputed 3 alumnus. No guarantee that any of the short-film's cast and crew will continue to the big-screen version of course, but if the full-blown film were to see the light of day in its current form, we'd be looking at, as well as the above-mentioned,...

Who knows if this will actually go through the proper channels and become a feature film, but if the internet screams loud enough, it's certainly possible. Kevin Tancharoen, who directed the update of Fame last year, put together a short film to try to secure financing for an R-rated Mortal Kombat movie at Warner Bros. I think you'll be impressed.
Kotaku tracked down the short, which doesn't pull any punches (pardon the pun). The feature-length version would be really intense. Latino Review was able to track down the cast list, by and large: Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite) is Jacks, Jeri Ryan is Sonya Blade, Undisputed III's Lateef Crowder is Baraka, Ian Anthony Dale, who will be in the new Tekken movie, is Scorpion, and martial artist Matt Mullins is Johnny Cage. There are other cast members still to be identified.

Mortal Kombat fans are wondering what the reasons are for a slick looking short film that reboots the movie spinoff franchise as a hard-edge actioner. The short has Hollywood level stars, fight choreography, editing and direction. The big question is: was this Mortal Kombat video done as a test for an R-rated movie reboot or is it the next step in the video game's evolution?
The video was uploaded to YouTube yesterday and then first given wider exposure earlier today by Kotaku, a gaming website. Forget the two 1990s Mortal Kombat movies and see what this fresh cinematic take at video game's most violent brawler looks like:

The original Mortal Kombat has the dubious honor of being one of Paul W.S. Anderson's best flicks. It's sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, bears the even more dubious honor of being one of the worst video game to film adaptations out there, nearly on the same level of bad as the Street Fighter movie. There's been talk of a third one for a while now, but thanks to various pending lawsuits it's been kept at bay. Wait until you guys see this.
Holy shit. Now this? Even though some obvious liberties were taken with the mythos to ground the series in a more realistic manner, this is something we can get behind. Over on YouTube an eight-minute video entitled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and starring Michael Jai White as Jax has surfaced, which brings on what we've been waiting for in an Mk film adaptation -- a serious tone and some serious violence.

A mysterious Mortal Kombat minimovie hit the Internet today. At first glance, it seemed like an elaborate commercial for a new Mortal Kombat game, or some kind of expensive fan creation. (Whether a fan could ever actually afford to put this cast and set together is debatable!)
But according to Chud, this is actually test footage shot by Warner Bros for a new Mortal Kombat movie. According to Latino Review, it was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, and the fight scenes were created by Larnell Stovall, the fight choreographer for Undisputed 3: Redemption. How it was leaked and why is unknown, unless Warner Bros, Tancharoen, and Stovall are merely hoping to gauge fan reaction. From the comments and Tweets I've seen, it's overwhelmingly positive. Kombat fans have longed for a film with all the gore of the game, and are hoping this means they could get the hard R version they want.
