Zachary Levi returns for a sequel to DC’s 2019 superhero hit, alongside returning director David F. Sandberg. As such, the follow-up doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first film, but there’s a decent amount of fun to be had along the way.
The plot picks up two years after the events of the previous film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel / Levi) and his Shazam Family of teens-who-turn-into-adult-superheroes established as a team of costumed crimefighters in their city, even if they occasionally screw up, earning them the label “the Philadelphia Fiascos”. However, when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu) show up,...

The following article contains spoilers for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," including the after-credits scene.
"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is in theaters after a years-long wait. When we meet up with our heroes in the new chapter, the Shazamily has been fighting crime and not doing the best job of it. They get distracted by kittens and have fun with their powers because after all, they're kids They battle it out with the Daughters of Atlas and save the world while trying to keep their secret safe from their foster parents (Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews) and finish growing up.
These kids are very busy, and perhaps they've forgotten about Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) now that he's in jail. Of course, they didn't see what audiences did; a little caterpillar/criminal genius named Mister Mind approaching Dr. Sivana in his cell in the after-credits scene.

Plot: After the events in the previous film, it appears Shazam has made a bit of a blunder. It’s a big enough of one to bring the Daughters of Atlas to unleash a little Hell on Earth.
Review: One of the joys of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam was the filmmaker’s mix of humor with a touch of horror. The comedic superhero excelled with the laughs. As well as a few moments fitting of the director’s previous films, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. And now, he is back with Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Zachary Levi is once again leading the charge. As is the rest of this charming cast. They include Grace Caroline Currey, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel, and Faithe Herman for the young actors. And this time, we see much more of Meagan Goode, Adam Brody, DJ Cotrona, and Ross Butler,...

DC will need to crank the PR machine into overdrive if they want Shazam! Fury of the Gods to perform heroically at the box office. According to the first round of projections, New Line Cinema‘s superhero sequel is tracking for a low-end domestic debut of $35 million to $40 million. Meanwhile, optimistic analysts think the film will bank as much as the first film, which pulled around $53.5 million in North America.
It’s worth noting the $35 million prediction comes from Nrg, Hollywood’s leading research firm. They know a thing or two about reading tea leaves for blockbuster debuts. Still, they need to be corrected from time to time. There’s a chance Shazam! Fury of the Gods will overperform, but I’m not holding my breath.

"Bigger action sequences, bigger set pieces." Get a first look at the Shazam! sequel in the works. During the DC FanDome event this weekend, Warner Bros also revealed a first look at David F. Sandberg's Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a sequel to his 2019 superhero comedy starring Zachary Levi. Not too much is known about this sequel yet, except that Shazam will be battling Hespera & Kalypso, and will have a whole new "superhero family" on his side. In addition to Levi, the new cast features Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, Rachel Zegler, Meagan Good, Grace Fulton, and Marta Milans; along with Djimon Hounsou, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer returning from the first one. This teaser is more of a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, showing tiny bit of footage, concept art, B-roll, and shots of them filming. This actually looks good so far, the first one was quite fun.

When we last saw Shazam’s arch-nemesis Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) during a mid-credits sequence at the end of 2019’s Shazam!, the mad scientist and Seven Deadly Sins host had been defeated by the title hero and was firmly ensconced at Rock Falls Penitentiary.
It was in his cell that he was approached by the super-intelligent alien centipede — and fellow Shazam super-villain — Mister Mind, who offered to form an alliance with Sivana and promised that the Seven Realms would be theirs for the taking.
While the sequel, now titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods, has been steadily ramping up since late last year as production began to resume post-pandemic, Strong has not been mentioned among the various returning and new cast members suiting up for the film. Today he makes it official when asked by Den of Geek: Sivana is sitting the sequel out.

Netflix's White Lines is a wild ride of violence, all-night parties, and falling in love with people you shouldn't fall in love with. The Ibiza-set story follows Zoe Walker (Laura Haddock) as she tries to figure out exactly what happened to her brother, Axel (Tom Rhys Harries), 20 years ago when he left home in Manchester, England, and set off for a new life in Ibiza. It takes all 10 episodes of the first (and perhaps only) season to get to the bottom of his disappearance, and the end is definitely not what we expected.
Axel is best friends with his younger sister, Zoe, and wants her to come along with him to Ibiza when their dad kicks him out. She stays behind, though, because she's still underage. She promises Axel that when she turns 18, she'll come join him and his friends in their lavish life. He disappears, though, and Zoe...

When DC Comics revived Captain Marvel in the 1970s, it was out of step with the audience and struggled to find success. Ever since, the publisher has been trying to find a formula to make the character and his world relevant to the readership. With Carol Danvers’ popularity as Captain Marvel ascendant, DC finally capitulated and began calling Billy Batson’s alter ego Shazam to keep the two from being confused.
With Captain Marvel out in March and Shazam out in April, there’s a good reason to rename the latter. (No one back in the day would ever have imagined either getting a big screen treatment or coming out so closely together.) Warner Home Entertainment has released Shazam in all the usual formats this week and it remains a fun, but not perfect film.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—Shazam!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains story details about Shazam!
It wasn’t that much of a surprise to pick David F. Sandberg as the director of the Warner Bros. adaptation of Shazam! The director is known mostly for his horror fare like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation but his credits also include short comedy films. His experience in the two genres make for a cross-section of filmmaking sensibilities that match the style and tone of the DC Comics superhero movie that is not only fun like an action-packed amusement park attraction, but also heartfelt and inclusive.
“I’ve always liked all kinds of movies, so many different genres,” Sandberg tells Deadline. “To me, this was a love letter to movies I grew up with and loved that made me fall in love with film.”

Superheroes in the Springtime? Oh yes, they’re not the mainstay of Summer cinema any longer. Hey, a few even pop up in the Winter. Just about four weeks ago Marvel Studios released their super-powered, high-flying hero Captain Marvel to much praise and big box office bucks. So this new flick has a fairly familiar fella’ in red tights and white cape, guess he’s from the same producers. right? Nope, this powerhouse actually predates all the McU stars (even WWII’s Captain America). Oh, and he hails from Marvel’s long-standing rival, DC Comics. Technically though he’s an acquisition from a defunct comic book kingdom (a bit more on that later). And what’s the source of his astounding abilities? Born on a distant planet? Exposure to weird rays or energy blasts? A bite from an irradiated animal? None of the above, for his myriad of gifts come...

Not only is Shazam! starring Zachary Levi a joy to watch but the diversity of the cast also gives the superhero film legitimacy and relatability. Children of all ages and color can look up on the big screen and see themselves portrayed. Billy Batson's foster family are played by a diverse set of actors. Marta Milans, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Grace Fulton and Faithe Herman sit down with CineMovie to discuss their role and why the film represents a good example of diversity on film.

Zachary Levi might now seem the obvious choice to play the superhero Shazam, but “Shazam!” director David F. Sandberg says he and producers looked at “over 100 people” before they set their sights on the 38-year-old actor.
“We looked at over 100 people,” Sandberg told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven. “Doing auditions, having them send in self tapes, and everything, it actually got to the point where we were like, ‘Oh, are we ever going to find our Shazam?'”
And then Sandberg saw a self-tape from Levi, the former “Chuck” star who played the comic Asgardian warrior Fandral in the last two “Thor” movies. “He had taped for a different character, but I saw him and I was like, ‘This guy feels perfect, he feels like a big kid, he has that enthusiasm and excitement,’ so right away, when I saw it, I knew,” Sandberg said. “I pitched him to the studio...

Shazam! opens in theaters nationwide Friday and although it is about a comic book film about a young boy who turns into a superhero every time he exclaims the word “Shazam!” He turns into a full grown man with superhuman strength, the ability to deflect bullets, can fly, is super fast and can shoot lightning from his fingertips. With the superhero bells and whistles of the charming titular character, this installment into the DC universe directed by David F. We forget, given how ubiquitous they’ve become in pop culture of all stripes, but superheroes were primarily created to appeal to kids. In fact, most of us were introduced to comic book characters during childhood. Too often, especially within the DC Extended Universe, that is forgotten. Not so with Shazam!, which is not just the best DC superhero outing since Christopher Nolan finished his Batman trilogy, but one of the most purely enjoyable times at the theater so far this year. This is a ridiculously good time, full of joy and a mix of exciting and innocence. As you’ll see this week, DC has cracked the code here. The movie is a superhero origin story for the title character. After a short prologue, we meet Billy Batson (Asher Angel), an orphan on the streets who constantly searches for his mother. His latest foster family is a kind one running a group home,...

Two boys, decades apart, are taken to a magical realm known as The Rock of Eternity to confront its last wizard guardian (Djimon Hounsou) protecting against the seven deadly sins. One (Ethan Pugiotto’s Thad) is revealed unworthy of becoming this magician’s champion because his soul isn’t pure. Too much anger and resentment for a belittling father and brother fills him with a desire for power, this latest rejection the final straw that ignites his devolution towards evil. The other (Asher Angel’s Billy) can’t be tested since the darkness candidates for champion must refuse is gone, the sins free. The wizard must hope this orphan’s search for love despite a me-first attitude is enough to wield the God-like abilities he’s forced to bestow upon him to save the world.

After David F. Sandberg became WB’s golden child post-Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation successes, superhero property Shazam! seemed an “inspired” choice for a follow-up project. “Why give a scream machine the reins to DC’s lovable manchild in tights?” Simple: Sandberg displays a surgeon’s precision by balancing snarly demonic darkness with playground superpower maturation. Don’t fret: Shazam! proves that the Dceu has a sense of humor, can execute on it and *deliver* an electric punch of uber-fun comic book action, too. Heart, humor and heroics – can I get a hell yeah?

"His name is...! Captain Sparkle Fingers." Warner Bros has finally debuted the full-length second trailer for the Shazam! movie, based on the DC Comics character. The first teaser trailer debuted last summer during Comic-Con, and we haven't seen much since then except for a promo spot on TV. With only one month to go until release, they're dropping a last minute look and it's a good one. Worth the wait, I'd say. Zachary Levi stars as Shazam, and the full cast includes Asher Angel playing Billy Batson, plus Mark Strong as the Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou. Looks like the VFX still need some polishing, but overall seems like it's going to be a super fun movie. I dig the little Batman reference, and music choice. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for David F. Sandberg's Shazam!

This aired during the big football game last night, and is now online for everyone to enjoy.
